Background / History
Gwen is the daughter of New York Police Department chief George Stacy. During the destruction caused by Hulk and Abomination, she is left in the path of a flying sedan after the crowd scatters. Chen Xi descends and punches the vehicle away, saving her life; his unusual masked appearance initially makes her wonder whether her rescuer is a robber. 2 3
The rescue leaves Gwen fascinated by the unidentified hero. She later notices that Chen Xi's eyes resemble those of the man who saved her and seeks confirmation after a dinner with Chen Xi, Peter Parker, and Harry Osborn. Chen Xi confirms her suspicion, overwhelming her with joy. 10 17
As Gwen grows closer to Chen Xi, she becomes insecure over his existing relationship with Wanda and her own perceived lack of worthiness. Chen Xi introduces her to unfamiliar experiences, including her first visit to a bar, where she drinks hard liquor and dances freely for the first time. 18 19
Gwen witnesses Chen Xi kill a mutant criminal who threatened her. Although horrified at first, she accepts his argument that the man was a continuing danger and that the killing protected her. George initially confronts Chen Xi over Gwen's late return, but becomes enthusiastic after learning who he is. 21
After her mutation, Gwen develops abilities similar to Peter Parker's and trains at Chen Xi's villa to control them. She adopts the Spider-Gwen identity, patrols New York, and pursues her ambition of becoming a superhero. 23 25 34
Personality
Gwen is courageous even before gaining powers: she approaches the strange masked man who rescued her, asks for his number, and later directly confronts Chen Xi over his identity. 3 17
She is initially reserved and self-conscious, especially regarding Chen Xi and Wanda, but is willing to test her limits when given new experiences. Her night at 230 Fifth reveals a more uninhibited side, as she insists on trying strong liquor and eagerly takes Chen Xi dancing. 18 19
As Spider-Woman, Gwen is proud of public recognition and has a sharp tongue in battle, taunting Green Goblin as “ugly.” Her heroism is nevertheless driven by empathy: she cannot ignore civilians in danger, even when Green Goblin uses that compassion against her. 45 46
Appearance
As Spider-Gwen, Gwen wears a red-and-white combat suit and conceals her identity behind a mask. 35 45
- Her ordinary vision improves after her mutation, eliminating her prior slight nearsightedness. 23
- She uses webs from her wrists to swing between buildings, bind enemies, and attempt rescues. 45 46
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Physiology
Gwen's mutation grants her physical abilities beyond those of an ordinary human.
- Can accidentally break fixtures through excessive strength. 23
- Can leap high enough to strike the ceiling of her home. 23
- Has substantially accelerated healing; a deep shoulder wound is already nearly healed shortly after her ambush. 35
- Her enhanced senses include restored vision. 23
Spider-Sense
Gwen possesses Spider-Sense, which warns her of danger and supports her mobility.
- Requires dedicated training to control it and her other powers. 25
- Gives warnings while she strains to stop Green Goblin's runaway tourist train. 46
- Is not infallible; Daredevil and Punisher's trap catches her off guard and results in a serious shoulder injury. 35
Webbing and Aerial Mobility
Gwen travels and fights through web-based movement.
- Swings rapidly through the city by attaching webs between skyscrapers. 46
- Uses webbing to immobilize Green Goblin's glider and pull him back into striking range. 45
- Attempts to halt a tourist train by anchoring dense webbing to bridge piers and support cables, but the webs repeatedly snap under the train's momentum. 46 47
Combat Training
Gwen trains with Bo Da and Bo Er and combines her instincts with increasingly capable hand-to-hand combat.
- Her training advances to the point that she can defeat both instructors outright. 45
- Uses evasive flips, kicks, punches, knees, elbow strikes, and web-assisted counters against Green Goblin. 45
- Her agility exceeds Green Goblin's, though his willingness to target civilians limits her options. 45 46
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red-and-white Spider-Gwen combat suit — her vigilante outfit. 35
- Wrist-fired webbing — used for traversal, restraint, and rescue attempts. 45 46
Relationships
