Background / History
Madara was one of the Warring States Period's defining shinobi and Hashirama Senju's only true rival. His strength and Perfect Susanoo became part of the shinobi world's legend; Ōnoki in particular remembered being terrified by him and regarded Susanoo as synonymous with destruction 77.
Before his death, Madara pursued peace through the Infinite Tsukuyomi and arranged for Nagato's Rinnegan to eventually enable his revival. He also believed Black Zetsu was a manifestation of his own will rather than an independent actor 151 157.
Danzō later resurrected Madara with the Impure World Reincarnation Jutsu, named him the Second Root Shadow, and requested his aid in becoming Hokage. Danzō's letter warned him that Hyuga Hitoshi had unified the shinobi world through overwhelming deterrence, but Madara found the transformed world interesting enough to act regardless 149.
Appearance
Madara is distinguished by the martial appearance associated with his historical reputation. After his true resurrection, his eyes are restored and he returns to active duty in the Sun God Country 151 158.
- Long, flowing black hair.
- Iconic red armor.
- Carries a war fan and sharp sickle forged from God Tree branches.
- Uses blue chakra constructs through Susanoo.
- Later carries twin long blades formed through chakra materialization after receiving Karma 151 169.
Personality
Madara is intensely proud, battle-driven, and dismissive of anyone he considers beneath his level. He initially ignores Tobirama's hostility, challenges Hashirama at a construction site, and refuses Nagato's demand that he submit without first proving his strength 151 154.
His pursuit of peace is genuine, though it was once tied to the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Confrontation with the Sun God Country's power, Nagato's Sun God Seal, and the truth behind Black Zetsu forces him to reassess both his worldview and his place in the shinobi world 154 166 167.
After his resurrection, Madara becomes noticeably more restrained. He works diligently for the Sun God Country, trains in ordinary swordsmanship, apologizes to Nagato, and grows more respectful toward Hyuga Hitoshi 157 179 183.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Rinnegan
Madara possesses exceptional ocular power as an Uchiha and later receives a Rinnegan from Black Zetsu 161.
- Can perceive and employ advanced ocular techniques, including Limbo: Border Jail.
- Uses the Rinnegan's familiar powers with enough mastery to counter Nagato's initial assault.
- His chakra constructs can be absorbed by Ōtsutsuki such as Momoshiki, making ordinary chakra-based attacks unreliable against them 152 162.
Susanoo
Madara's Susanoo is his signature manifestation of destructive power.
- Progresses from second-stage and third-stage forms to a fully armored Perfect Susanoo 152 153.
- Perfect Susanoo is vastly larger than the Susanoo used by Fugaku and Shisui 153.
- Can wield massive chakra blades and fight at battlefield scale.
- Was crushed by Nagato after Nagato activated the Sun God Seal and continuously opened the Eight Gates 154.
- Its chakra can be directly absorbed by Momoshiki 162.
Tengai Shinsei
Madara can summon a meteorite to strike opponents from above.
- Used against Nagato during their Land of Rain battle 153.
- Nagato destroys the meteorite after receiving Super-Tier Authority from Hyuga Hitoshi 154.
Karma of Ryūshiki Ōtsutsuki
Ryūshiki's Karma grants Madara unfamiliar Ōtsutsuki power, but also creates a risk that its owner may seize control of his body 169.
- Enhances Madara's power and gives him access to chakra materialization.
- Causes potentially abnormal thoughts and mental influence associated with being an Ōtsutsuki vessel.
- Madara chooses to keep the Karma rather than have Hitoshi erase it.
- Hitoshi offers to help Madara retain control if Ryūshiki attempts possession 169.
Swordsmanship and Taijutsu
Madara continues training after his resurrection rather than relying solely on ocular power.
- Forms and uses chakra-materialized long blades 169 171.
- Defeats Indra with a final strike combining swordsmanship and taijutsu rather than an overwhelming Susanoo attack 179.
- His final strike is assessed as a newly acquired level of power beyond Super Kage 179.
Combined Combat with Hashirama
Madara can coordinate seamlessly with Hashirama despite their long rivalry.
- Combines Susanoo armor with Hashirama's Wood Golem to create a Susanoo-clad Wood Golem 162.
- Together, they catch Momoshiki's amplified chakra blade barehanded 162.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gunbai fan and sickle — signature weapons forged from God Tree branches 151.
- Chakra blades — twin long blades created after Madara gains Ryūshiki's Karma 169.
- Impure World Reincarnation scroll — inherited from Danzō after Madara's resurrection 149.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — lifelong rival and former equal from the Warring States Period. They later reconcile enough to work together against Momoshiki, and Hashirama encourages Madara to find a new role in the current world 160 162.
- Nagato — victim of Madara's former Rinnegan scheme and initially his opponent. Madara later apologizes and returns the Rinnegan; both join the God Guard Squad 151 179.
- Hyuga Hitoshi — ruler of the Sun God Country whose strength and broader vision reshape Madara's worldview. Hitoshi restores Madara to life and offers support against Ryūshiki's Karma 157 167 169.
- Black Zetsu — Madara once believed him to be his own will. Black Zetsu guides him toward revival and the Sun God Seal, but Madara eventually realizes Zetsu's connection to Kaguya 154 157 166.
- Uchiha Obito — Madara's failed successor who spent years using Madara's identity. Madara disapproves of Obito's arrogance and lack of growth 152.
- Uchiha Sasuke — Madara is reminded of Izuna by Sasuke's appearance and chooses to accompany him on a dangerous mission. Madara later protects Sasuke from Momoshiki as if defending his own younger brother 158 162.
- Ryūshiki Ōtsutsuki — implants Karma into Madara after abandoning his own body; his dormant consciousness remains a potential threat to Madara's autonomy 169 171.
- Indra — opponent in the Shinobi World Tournament. Madara defeats him in a battle between two users of Perfect Susanoo 178 179.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Revival and the Land of Rain Battle
Danzō's Impure World Reincarnation restores Madara and provides him with a letter explaining the radically changed shinobi world. Madara appears at the Sun God Construction Site to challenge Hashirama, then clashes with Nagato in the Land of Rain 149 151 153.
Madara deploys Perfect Susanoo and Tengai Shinsei, but Nagato's Sun God Seal power destroys both his meteorite and Perfect Susanoo. Black Zetsu persuades Madara to retreat and seek a future chance at obtaining the Sun God Seal 153 154.
Service to the Sun God Country
To secure a true resurrection, Madara contributes labor and territorial expansion to the Sun God Country. Hyuga Hitoshi recognizes those achievements, restores him to a living body, and grants him a new chance to pursue strength without opposing the existing world order 156 157.
Madara becomes associated with the Sun God Construction Second Division and personally handles much of its work when volunteers prove unreliable 158.
Ōtsutsuki Conflict and the Truth of Infinite Tsukuyomi
Madara joins Hashirama and Tobirama against the Ōtsutsuki in the Land of Waves. He initially finds Momoshiki's ability to absorb Susanoo chakra difficult to counter, then cooperates with Hashirama to block Momoshiki's amplified chakra blade 161 162.
After noticing Black Zetsu call Kaguya “Mother,” Madara seeks Hitoshi's explanation of the Infinite Tsukuyomi and the shinobi world's origin. He accepts that Black Zetsu manipulated him and comes to recognize the far greater threat posed by the Ōtsutsuki 166 167.
Karma and the Shinobi World Tournament
Ryūshiki implants Karma into Madara, granting him Ōtsutsuki power. Madara knowingly keeps it, trusting Hitoshi's offer to help him resist any future takeover 169.
In the Shinobi World Tournament, Madara defeats Indra in a Perfect Susanoo clash and earns renewed public support. Fugaku formally restores his standing as an Uchiha and Konoha shinobi, though Madara no longer considers a single village the limit of his ambitions 178 179.
God Guard Squad
Madara apologizes to Nagato and returns the Rinnegan. Though Nagato accepts the public apology without fully forgiving him personally, the two enter the God Guard Squad to prepare for future battles against the Ōtsutsuki Clan 179.
