Background / History

Li Zhikong is Bai Jinxiao’s son, born amid the scandal that followed Bai’s presumed death. After Mr. Qin learned that Li was not his biological child, Li was rejected by the Qin household and repeatedly passed between relatives and adoptive families. Several foster couples deemed infertile conceived after taking him in, leading his family to fear that he carried an abnormal influence inherited from Bai. 2

His maternal grandparents ultimately raised him. Alarmed by his childhood ability to attract other children and reconcile their “rivalries” around him, they renamed him Zhikong, intending the name’s association with emptiness and abstinence to restrain his presumed inherited desires. 2
