Ch. 81Cunning
Key events
- After the encounter with Aokiji, Werther is so exhausted that he collapses on the floor and sleeps for a day. Ferdinand tries to reach him, then plans to contact Doflamingo about Caesar Clown.
- On waking, Werther briefly suffers his recurring loss of memory after severe injury. He then hears the remnant of the body’s original owner plead with him to protect a girl, surrendering the body and what remains of his consciousness.
- Werther realizes he has finally absorbed the boy’s soul completely. The boy’s only clue to the girl he called his “little sister” is a vague memory of a plush toy.
- Werther wakes the injured girl, Anita, and tells her she will remain aboard until he reaches an agreement with the Marines. When she claims Vegapunk is her father, Werther questions her story and suspects she is concealing her real identity.
Character developments and interactions
- Werther gains a clearer sense of ownership over his body and a new obligation: protect the boy’s little sister, despite knowing almost nothing about her. His rough, threatening manner contrasts with his promise to honor the boy’s final request.
- The original owner of Werther’s body is revealed as a lingering consciousness who gave up his last hold on the body in exchange for Werther’s promise to protect the girl. Werther accepts him as a brother.
- Anita is frightened and evasive. She claims to be Vegapunk’s daughter, but her reaction makes Werther doubt her identity.
- Tuski has treated the girl’s injuries and remains nearby, while Werther uses intimidation and pointed questions to test Anita.
Significant themes
- Identity and ownership: Werther discovers that the body he has inhabited still held another consciousness.
- Sacrifice and obligation: The boy relinquishes his remaining existence to entrust the girl’s protection to Werther.
- Trust and deception: Werther’s suspicions about Anita underline the danger of taking appearances and claims at face value.
