Ch. 341It was snowing
Chapter summary
Rex has spent three days in Gilneas City, largely unseen while he investigates the cause of the heavy snow. Old Gilneas is recovering thanks to a steady supply of resources, and King Genn has ordered the supplies Rex obtained from Kael’thas sent there. With those provisions on the way, Rex is no longer worried about the region’s immediate stability.
To determine whether the snowfall is natural or artificially caused, Rex recalls his education and reviews how precipitation forms. He reasons that snow develops when ice crystals in mixed clouds grow through interactions with supercooled water droplets and water vapor until they become heavy enough to fall. Since Azeroth has little scientific study of weather—its technology is mostly directed toward warfare—Rex plans to test this explanation by observing the clouds and snowfall firsthand.
A guard arrives with word that Jaina and her companions have reached Gilneas City and are looking for Rex. Rex had expected Jaina to travel quickly, perhaps through the Fixed Portal linking the continents, and wonders why her journey took so long. Her arrival also reminds him that the Night Elves restrict access to the portal, frustrating his plan to use it to encourage trade and prosperity between the continents. He believes their grip on Mount Hyjal will eventually weaken: the World Tree there has been destroyed, the environment is deteriorating, and Nether creatures appear in the region. Despite repeated proposals to relocate, Tyrande has kept the Night Elves there.
Rex tells the guard he will return shortly, then starts toward the city. As he walks and reflects on the portal and the Night Elves’ situation, snow begins to fall.
Character developments and interactions
- Rex is shown applying knowledge from his former life to a practical mystery. His focus shifts from securing Old Gilneas to investigating the weather, while his frustration with the Night Elves’ portal restrictions reveals his broader ambitions for economic development.
- King Genn acts decisively to support Old Gilneas by dispatching supplies, easing Rex’s concerns.
- Jaina arrives in Gilneas with companions, though she has not yet met Rex in the chapter.
- Tyrande is described as resisting the Night Elves’ proposed relocation from Mount Hyjal.
- A mounted guard delivers news of Jaina’s arrival and Rex’s summons; Rex instructs him to report that he will return soon.
Significant themes
- Knowledge across worlds: Rex’s remembered scientific education gives him tools that Azeroth’s warfare-centered society has not developed.
- Recovery and stability: Material resources can turn major hardships into manageable problems.
- Progress versus control: Rex sees the Fixed Portal as a means of connecting societies and fostering prosperity, while Night Elf restrictions limit that potential.
- Environmental consequences: The damaged World Tree, worsening conditions at Mount Hyjal, and incursions from the Twisting Nether suggest that past destruction continues to shape the present.
