Background / History
The Flying Graysons and adoption
Dick grew up traveling and performing with his parents, John and Mary Grayson, in the Flying Graysons, a renowned family of world-class trapeze artists. Circus life exposed him both to enthusiastic audiences and to contempt, extortion, and corrupt officials. Tony Zucco was responsible for his parents’ deaths, after which Bruce Wayne adopted him 79 173 237 397.
The name Robin originally came from Dick’s mother. He became Batman’s first Robin and fought crime alongside Bruce from his early teens. At twelve, shortly after taking up the role, he met Barbara at Gordon’s police station and developed his first romantic feelings for her 51 79 209 370.
School life
As Bruce’s first adopted child, Dick attracted hostility from wealthy classmates who resented his circus background or wanted to exploit the Wayne name. He concealed the resulting fights and injuries beneath his cheerful, exemplary-student image. Alfred noticed missing medical supplies and marks on school belongings, but Bruce remained unaware 450.
Dick learned to retaliate without allowing confrontations to escalate beyond his control and later taught Jason those methods. When Bruce finally learned the truth, Dick explained that he had not wanted to add to Bruce’s responsibilities or seem like a child who only took from the family 450 451.
Becoming Nightwing
As Dick grew older, disagreements with Bruce’s ideals led to repeated arguments and physical clashes. After reaching adulthood, he left Wayne Manor, became a police officer in Blüdhaven, and established himself as the city’s vigilante, Nightwing 24 77 79.
Learning that Bruce had adopted Jason without telling him initially made Dick furious. He returned to Gotham and fought Jason throughout the manor, but the two subsequently treated each other’s injuries and talked. Recognizing Jason’s potential, Dick personally passed on the Robin uniform and name 77 209.
After Jason’s death, Tim approached Dick about becoming Robin again to help stabilize Batman. Dick refused to abandon his independent career; Tim later rescued both Batman and Nightwing with Alfred’s help and became the third Robin 78.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Thick black hair and blue eyes 51 366.
- Build: Slender, long-legged, and agile; his physique is the closest to Bruce’s among the children, helping him impersonate Batman 24 47 392.
- Face and expression: Strikingly handsome, with a bright, dazzling smile. Gannon initially mistakes his appearance for that of an inexperienced officer 17 392.
- Parallel-universe vampire form: Dark-red pupils, smoother and paler skin, and pointed fangs 421.
Personality
Dick is the sunniest and most outgoing of the Robins. His circus upbringing left him eager to perform, make friends, and lighten tense situations. He is openly affectionate, frequently greeting relatives with hugs, and expresses excitement so forcefully that Jason’s return to the manor becomes a household-waking wrestling match 47 79 93 370.
His playfulness often becomes deliberate provocation, especially toward Damian. He takes photographs of an unwilling Damian, traps him in hugs, and teases him into knife-wielding chases. Nevertheless, when younger children need guidance or the family faces danger, he becomes a dependable elder brother 47 140 193 196.
His cheerful demeanor does not mean he is naïve. He understands social cruelty, conceals his own suffering, and can be ruthless toward bullies. He also recognizes the corruption and failures that leave ordinary citizens unprotected, explaining that the Bat Family fights because it refuses to let Gotham and its people be consumed by darkness 237 450 451.
Abilities & Skills
Acrobatics and close-quarters combat
- Trained as a Flying Graysons trapeze artist from childhood; his distinctive movements helped Tim identify Robin 173 209.
- Uses agility to evade attacks, vault over opponents, and strike from unexpected angles. Against an armed freighter officer, he redirects gunfire before vaulting onto the man’s back and striking his neck 100.
- Restrains the newly arrived Damian without injuring him, despite suffering wounds from Damian’s sword attacks 79.
- Improvises weapons from broken torches to kill vampires with strikes through their hearts 408.
- Limits: As a human, he tires, bleeds, and feels pain. A continuous assault by regenerating vampires eventually overwhelms him 408.
Investigation and surveillance
- Pursues Blüdhaven’s disappearances even when the cases lack obvious connections or usable evidence 366.
- Compares police files to identify records concerning a vampire encountered during patrol 392.
- Maintains surveillance feeds in his private operations base 380.
- Places the Cullen family under intended close observation rather than immediately treating all vampires as enemies 396.
Batman impersonation
- Repeatedly covers Bruce’s patrols when Bruce is missing or unavailable 24 98 366.
- Combines the Batsuit, makeup, a voice modulator, and imitations of Bruce’s posture and movements to reproduce Batman’s presence 98.
- Patrols Gotham and monitors the other family members’ activities while maintaining the disguise 98.
- Uses the impersonation during the coordinated freighter operation 100 101.
Understanding criminal motives
- Proposes reaching Harvey Dent through Gilda Grace Gold, whom he identifies as Harvey’s enduring love 240.
- Distinguishes Harvey’s potential response to Gilda from Victor Fries’s dangerous protectiveness toward Nora, her stasis pod, and his research 240.
- Suggests renovating the abandoned amusement park’s existing structures instead of treating everything associated with the Joker as irredeemable 173.
Resistance to vampire charm
- Resists Pandora’s attempt to charm him. At the time, he credits his frequent family visits, singing practice with Miaomiao, and constant use of her mermaid-silk charm 407.
- This resistance does not prevent physical capture by overwhelming numbers of vampires 408.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Nightwing suit and Kali Sticks — His usual vigilante equipment. He leaves both behind when accompanying Melinda to mediate with the vampires, leaving him effectively unarmed 133 380 408.
- Batsuit and disguise equipment — Used with makeup and a voice modulator while substituting for Batman 98.
- Communicator — Maintains contact during operations, but loses its signal deep inside the underground vampire sanctuary 408.
- Mermaid-silk charm — A gift from Miaomiao that he continuously wears; Miaomiao follows it while searching for him 407 411.

- Black Lamborghini — Drives Miaomiao to the Iceberg Lounge in it 248.

Relationships
- Bruce Wayne / Batman — Adoptive father and former mentor. Their relationship includes serious ideological clashes, but Dick rushes home when Bruce returns safely, substitutes for him as Batman, and often explains Bruce’s unspoken affection to others 17 24 79 230.
- John and Mary Grayson — Birth parents and fellow Flying Graysons performers. Tony Zucco caused their deaths; Mary gave Dick the nickname that became Robin 173 209 397.
- Jason Todd / Red Hood — Younger adopted brother and first successor as Robin. Their violent first meeting develops into mutual recognition, and Dick becomes especially protective after Jason’s suffering 93 209.
- Tim Drake / Red Robin — Younger brother and investigative collaborator. Tim once asked him to resume being Robin; they later cooperate on the Joker Oblivion Plan and Blüdhaven case discussions 78 134 377.
- Damian Wayne / Robin — Youngest brother and frequent target of teasing. Dick initially restrains him without injury and later balances affectionate provocation with attempts to teach empathy 79 193 452.
- Miaomiao Wayne — Adopted younger sister. Dick notices her discomfort on land, carries her, praises her abilities, and accompanies her into potentially dangerous situations. She rescues him from Pandora and treats his wounds 19 133 248 409 420.
- Alfred Pennyworth — Family caretaker who notices Dick’s concealed school injuries. Dick helps pull him into the family portrait 196 450.
- Barbara — Former romantic partner and trusted confidante. She persuades him to keep Hayley and later urges him to tell Bruce about the vampire threat and Alice’s prediction 370 379 420.
- Melinda Grayson-Lin — Older paternal half-sister and Blüdhaven’s mayor. Dick protects the privacy of their connection, but she betrays him by delivering him to Pandora for transformation. He cannot bring himself to hurt her even afterward 397 398 408.
- Hayley / Bitewing — Adopted three-legged dog and patrol partner. Initially distrustful after abuse, she bites Dick during his rescue attempt but gradually bonds with him; her sharp senses help track criminals 379.
- Gannon Malloy — Police partner. Initially skeptical of Dick’s appearance, Gannon comes to respect his stamina, fighting ability, and dedication to cases, despite his unexplained absences 392.

- Asks whether her pearls could preserve his looks, but learns that pearls shed for Alfred or Bruce cannot benefit him 51.
- Acts as Batman during the Bat children’s successful operation against armed criminals aboard a freighter 98 100 101.
Joker Oblivion Plan and public opinion
- Overhears the younger family members discussing how to erase the Joker’s influence and agrees to keep their plan secret from Bruce 133 134 170.
- Supports reclaiming an abandoned amusement park for Gotham’s children, drawing on his circus experience to propose renovations 170 173.
- Helps discuss Gotham’s appetite for gossip and ways to sustain attention around positive Wayne-family news 193 196.

- Volunteers to handle Two-Face by bringing Harvey and Gilda together for Christmas 240.
- Escorts Miaomiao to meet Oswald Cobblepot and later helps examine the gifts suspected of causing Harley’s condition; his scans reveal no abnormality 248 253.
Blüdhaven disappearances and Pandora
Dick’s investigation into frequent disappearances leaves him severely sleep-deprived. After Miaomiao insists on helping—and Jason, Tim, and Bruce support her—he takes her to Blüdhaven. He remains intensely protective, becoming alarmed when an explosion damages her suit even though she is unharmed 366 377 385.
Melinda later leads him into Pandora’s underground sanctuary under the pretext of mediation. Without his usual equipment or a working communications signal, Dick fights with improvised stakes until the vampires overwhelm him. His inability to hurt Melinda prevents him from using her as leverage to escape 408.
Miaomiao and her vampire allies intervene before the transformation is completed. Pandora is killed, Dick is rescued, and Miaomiao subsequently cleans and bandages his injuries 409 414 420.
Parallel-universe Vampire King
After his rescue, Dick experiences an extraordinarily detailed dream in which Miaomiao never arrives. His counterpart becomes a vampire, kills Pandora and Mary Seward, and turns his attachment to family into a desire to force his loved ones to share vampiric eternity 421 422 423.
| Parallel-universe action | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Turns Hal Jordan using their existing friendship | Gains a powerful ally whose ring can filter harmful components of sunlight 425. |
| Slaughters the Legion of Doom and pursues Andrew | Removes resistance and targets a vampire carrying something capable of breaking the vampire curse 425. |
| Plans a permanent barrier between Earth and the sun | Intends to make vampires the ruling population and humans livestock 425. |
| Kills Bruce and Tim | Treats their intelligence and possible resistance as too dangerous to risk through transformation 428 429. |
| Turns Damian | Fails to secure obedience: Damian retains his will, hides, refuses human blood, and aids surviving humans 429 432. |
Dick reports these events to his family. Bruce concludes that the dream projects a real parallel universe and treats its information as an opportunity to prevent equivalent disasters in their own timeline 428.
