Background / History
Dual inheritance
Firstborn carries two opposed legacies. He is the Tyrant's Vessel, but also the firstborn of the divine family descended from the deity who killed the Tyrant. That family's responsibilities include guarding Tyrant's Tomb against the Outer God's resurrection. Firstborn therefore serves as both the Tyrant's potential vessel and the keeper charged with preventing his return 144 148.
His birth involved grudges from the previous generation and an enormous sacrifice by the Tyrant Family. According to Firstborn, its lineage has effectively died out apart from him. He awakened a highly pure Tyrant bloodline, but struggles to control its power 145 149.
Rise to power
During the war between the Church and the Gods' Families centuries earlier, Firstborn intervened when the divine families were close to defeat. He held off the Church's main army, then led several dozen riders into its Holy City. After defeating the Fifth, Fourth, and Second Divine Attendants, he took the Church's Vessel of God hostage and forced the First Attendant to return and sign an armistice 252.
Over the following decade, he united the Gods' Families and established their final Covenant, elevating the Undying Family into one of the continent's most powerful lineages. He subsequently launched continental conquests in the God Alliance's name. Jiu describes him as an emperor recognized by hundreds of city-states and a dictator who conquered half the world 252.
The hidden master of the Void Consortium helped him during his rise. In return, Firstborn agreed to protect the Consortium in the Spirit Realm, provided it did not attempt to resurrect the World Ruler 270. His unification did not eliminate infighting: divine families backed by surviving gods continued to oppress those that had lost their protectors 335.
Seclusion in Tyrant's Tomb
Firstborn spent ten years in the Seventh Layer refining his Origin Substances. His refuge lay within Tyrant's Tomb, whose central ruins had once served as the Tyrant Family's headquarters and mausoleum during Eternal Night 141 148.
Despite his ability to endure isolation, he admits that he still wanted someone to talk to. Lin En's arrival ends that prolonged solitude 141.
Appearance
Firstborn appears as a poised young man whose manner and dress contrast sharply with the dangers of the Spirit Realm 139 198.
- Clothing: Wears a silk-like robe described as thin as a cicada's wing, even in a frozen wilderness 198.
- Royal presentation: Depicted seated on a throne wearing a Crown of Laurels 252.
- Active power markings: Pure silver patterns spread across his wrists and torso, covering his body; sacred-looking markings appear on his back, and golden light fills his eyes 143.
- Giant form: Becomes an immense silver-rune-covered figure whose feet resemble mountains and whose upper body disappears into the clouds 199.
Personality
Firstborn generally presents himself as refined, calm, and courteous. His knightly code discourages him from fighting girls, and he repeatedly closes his eyes rather than look when Lin En attempts to expose himself. These scruples coexist with considerable pride in his defenses and abilities 139 143 144 277.
His political outlook is pragmatic and self-interested. He considers morality dependent on one's position and sees little reason for powerful beings to concern themselves with the affairs of the weak. He is willing to tolerate widespread chaos when it benefits him, but immediately rejects any scheme that would use his own body as its price 148 201.
Around Lin Yin, he becomes unusually accommodating, affectionate, and possessive. He interrupts an assembly to rescue Lin Yin, replays recorded praise, and tries to provide financial support without openly calling it a gift. Although inexperienced at courtship, he eventually recognizes that he has been too forward and resolves to approach the relationship more gradually 196 202 251 278.
His tenderness does not remove his ruthlessness. He proposes killing Tyrael to protect their secrets and privately considers arranging an “accident” for Lin Yin's supposed brother if necessary. His repeated refusal to accept that Lin En and Lin Yin are the same person sustains the central misunderstanding of their relationship 201 251 309.
Abilities & Skills
Undying
Undying specializes in extreme bodily durability. Firstborn describes it as an ultimate defense that can make the body impervious to water and fire when sufficiently cultivated 141.
- Whole-body protection: Leaves no ordinary anatomical weak point; even Lin En's attack between his legs fails to bypass it 143.
- Impact absorption: His silver markings absorb and dissipate blows that would otherwise launch him backward 143.
- Limit: It is not literal invulnerability. Lin En's empowered assault cracks the markings and seriously injures him; the Snow Demon also penetrates his defenses after he equips additional substances 144 199.
- Family legacy: Undying belongs to the same inherited group as Deathless, Ageless, and Immortal. The passages do not establish that he personally cultivates all four 141.
Tyrant Bloodline
Firstborn has awakened an exceptionally pure Tyrant bloodline and identifies himself as the Outer God's Vessel 144 145.
- Recognizes the Lord of Crawling's power when Lin En manifests it 144.
- Attributes their meeting in Tyrant's Tomb partly to the attraction between their ancestral bloodlines 145.
- Wants descendants whose Lucifal blood could suppress his other inherited blood and preserve the Tyrant lineage 145.
- Warns that excessive use of an Outer God's power can alter not only a vessel's body, but also its mind and identity 281.
Spatial Manipulation
Firstborn uses spatial Origin Substances to create routes through the Spirit Realm and return others to reality 150 310.
- Long-distance rifts: Opens a passage from Tyrant's Tomb to the Second Layer 150.
- Reality Collapse: Takes Lin En into the Third Layer while forcing Jiu back into reality 254.
- Containment: Encloses a room in a layer of shattered mirrors while restraining the power released by Hana Ye's awakening 258.
- Limit: His spatial techniques do not make every forbidden zone safely traversable; the Eighth Layer's dangers require specific precautions and routes 196 197 202.
Direct Origin Power Projection
Firstborn can interrupt the conversion of Origin Substance power into sequence abilities and release it externally as an invisible driving force, similar to telekinesis 280.
- Manipulates enormous masses of earth and stone, crushing the occupants of a Crimson Secret Cult stronghold 280.
- Explains that higher sequence counts increase available power, while uniform sequences make that power denser and easier to control 280.
- Teaches Lin En the technique; mixed sequences require more mental effort because their separate power currents must be recombined 280 281.
Gigantification and Physical Combat
Firstborn can enlarge himself to colossal proportions and fights effectively through overwhelming physical force 199 323.
- Shatters an awakened ice giant with one punch 198.
- Breaks the Lord of Crimson's Red Moon illusion and destroys an airship in the same attack 310.
- Pressures the Lord of Crimson and Asheris sufficiently that Asheris abandons their covenant rather than risk death 323.
- Acknowledges that the ice giants have deteriorated with age and claims he probably could not defeat them in their prime 198.
Mental Energy and Memory Probing
Firstborn can sense mental fluctuations, replenish mental energy, and investigate another being's memories 258 323.
- Attempts to restore Hana Ye after an emotional shock 258.
- Identifies the Lord of Crimson's incomplete soul as a weakness and probes her memories to uncover her inherited power and collaborators 323.
- Limit: Hana Ye's Red Moon-related authority rejects his Undying-aligned power, triggering a near-transformation into a Weird. His concentration during memory probing also leaves him exposed to the Great Corrupter's attack 258 323.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Walking Stick / Flexible Sword — Carries a walking stick concealing a Flexible Sword, which he draws before confronting the entities emerging from the Spirit Realm breach 278 343.
- Crown of Laurels — Part of his imperial presentation; removes his wreath before leaving to rescue Lin En 196 252.
- Storage rings — Stores supplies such as bandages in a ring. Gives Lin En a modified ring capable of holding living people for up to twenty hours, accepting only ten Spirit Coins despite its enormous value 144 201.
- Communication crystal — Supplies Lin En with a paired crystal for contacting him; later calls use the Impression Crystal 150 196 250.
- Spatial Origin Substances — His stored set includes a third-tier substance with eight Space sequences and one Frail Constitution, plus a fourth-tier substance with nine Long-Distance Leap sequences. Temporarily implants all three spatial substances before handing them over to Lin En 149 150.
- Sorrow of Cursed Fire — Returns the Black Sword to Lin En after their encounter in Tyrant's Tomb; it is not established as Firstborn's personal weapon 141.
Relationships
- Lin En / Lin Yin Lucifal — Ally, protected friend, and romantic interest under the Lin Yin identity. Firstborn believes Lin Yin is a woman and Lin En is her older brother. Lin En repeatedly rejects his marriage and childbirth proposals, but continues to seek his help. Firstborn eventually cooperates with Lin En against the Lord of Crimson while still refusing to accept that the two identities belong to one person 145 201 250 282 309.
- Jiu — Long-standing enemy from the Church–Gods' Families war. Firstborn claims to have tricked her three to five hundred times before attacking the Holy City. Their hostility culminates in another duel, which Jiu acknowledges losing 254 293.
- Shinsen Saya — Respects her exceptional power despite the Gods' Families' hostility toward the Valkyrie. Later fights beside her at the Spirit Realm breach 147 280 343.
- Hana Ye — Investigates her history and attempts to restore her mental energy. Her awakened Red Moon authority reacts dangerously to his power 258 270.
- Liu Si of Yuzhi — Former recruitment prospect. Firstborn remembers his victory in the Gods' Families' Hunting Arena decades earlier and his refusal to join him 254.
- Void Consortium's master — Benefactor during Firstborn's rise and partner in a conditional protection agreement 270.
- Lord of Crimson — Enemy who attempts to turn him against Lin En. Firstborn instead joins Lin En's trap and later interrogates her through her memories 309 323.
- Great Corrupter — An old enemy who interrupts his confrontation with the Lord of Crimson 323.
- Younger brother — Reportedly contacts a coalition of divine families plotting against Firstborn, prompting Firstborn to consider taking action 150.
