Background / History

School and Military Life

Bai Shu was a refined, well-mannered model student who wore glasses in middle school. Xu Duoduo was his former class monitor, while Qin Luo and the other squad members were longstanding friends. He later joined the military, remembering instant noodles after training as a particular comfort 8 18 23 34.

Becoming a sniper had been his dream, but his eyesight prevented him from fulfilling it before his mutation. His enhanced eyes made that role possible 44.

Cannery Rescue

During the squad’s journey, Bai Shu killed a mutated elephant with a sniper rifle. At the cannery complex, he identified three warehouses of canned food and helped verify that Xu Duoduo could genuinely store supplies rather than merely conceal them with an illusion 7 8 9.

He helped protect survivors during the mutant monkey attack. After finding Xu Duoduo bloodied and holding a chainsaw, he feared she had lost her awareness, then relaxed when she recognized him and Chen Xiaofei. He also helped document the monkey king’s mutant core and the squad’s encounters 12 13 17.

Supply Expedition and Snake-Man Battle

Bai Shu compared City C’s granary and City I’s armory as supply targets, emphasizing their dangers and the need to conceal Xu Duoduo’s storage ability. Along the route, he guarded her while she collected gasoline, helped gather supplies, and worked with Wang Weihu and Zhao Gang to modify a bus for rescued survivors 19 23 26.

Against the giant Mutant Snake-Man, he established a concealed hillside position while Xu Duoduo cleared insects around him. His shots repeatedly wounded the enemy, but its evasiveness prevented vital hits. After the victory, he helped the injured squad members into their vehicle, recorded evidence, and drove them away 29 30.

Bai Shu uploaded the monster’s data despite a bleeding ear from its sonic attack. He divided the 200,000-point bounty, assigning Xu Duoduo 100,000 points and each of the four men 25,000. He later corrected her team profile while deliberately omitting details of her spatial ability from the report 31 35.

Granary Recovery and Typhoon Preparations

During the City C rescue operation, Bai Shu covered Wang Weihu’s evacuation work and guarded survivors against incoming zombies. At Ping’an County’s granaries, he established that each of the thirty-two structures held approximately 7,500 tons of grain—a total of 240,000 tons collected by Xu Duoduo 39 42.

Back at the base, he explained the Research Center’s findings on mutant cores and ability-enhancing injections. Following his own injection-assisted breakthrough and animal-form manifestation, he received guidance from Professor Ji. He joined the squad’s commitment to protect and train Xu Duoduo, then prepared for defensive duty as the typhoon reached the base 45 48 49 50.

Typhoon Defense and Early Psychic Combat

Bai Shu helped explain ability use to Xu Duoduo as energy that must be consciously channeled. When she successfully retrieved an object from one meter away, he recorded the result and encouraged her to extend the range through practice 51.

During the mission against mutant bats southeast of the base, Chen Xiaofei carried him upward and threw him into a glide. Although initially furious, Bai Shu quickly adapted and began climbing buildings to glide between positions, conserving energy while improving his movement speed. During the swarm’s mass attack, he activated Illusion, disorienting the bats and making them kill one another as the rest of 3A deployed their own abilities 52 53.

Before the squad’s next departure, the Artisan Department supplied him with a custom gun capable of both close- and long-range fire, with a ten-cubic-meter ammunition magazine. He subsequently combined this weapon with Illusion to disrupt zombie hordes and shoot the survivors 62 66.

Headquarters Negotiations and City R Operations

After the operation against Wu Dahai, Bai Shu briefed Headquarters personnel, emphasized Miss Little Deer’s contribution, and presented secretly recorded footage of the Golden Roc Squad’s misconduct. Headquarters confirmed that 3A would receive a reward for stopping Wu Dahai, while the official promised action against Golden Roc. Bai Shu also reminded him to provide 3A’s benefits. His teammates approved of his handling of the meeting, despite Chen Xiaofei’s exaggerated alarm at his scheming 105.

Before the City R mission, Bai Shu joined the squad’s visit to Lin Qianxing’s shop for winter clothing and attribute-enhancing accessories. The team received warming bracelets as compensation for previous help and purchased an ornate dress for Xu Duoduo 118.

Against the Mutant Beauty Tree and surrounding creatures, Bai Shu shot smaller mutant beasts and used psychic attacks to redirect insects toward the tree. Repeated mental exertion exhausted him, and he deliberately avoided a direct mental confrontation with the tree because he judged it too dangerous 135 137.

City E Mission and Total Blackout Day

Bai Shu accepted the City E mission through the Forum and explained that 3A would wait for the other squads and possible Headquarters instructions before departing. The Artisan Department invited the team to receive weapon modifications and specialized equipment 157.

During the robot encounters, he found that his Mental Attack had little effect on the machines and instead relied on modified firearms. Shots that struck their wiring could set them on fire 167.

As meteorites began falling, Bai Shu helped make and stockpile food at Qin Luo’s home. When daylight failed to return, the team recognized that Total Blackout Day and the Dark Age had begun. Headquarters suspended outside missions for ability users and restricted ordinary residents to indoor shelter 178 179.

Wa Country Mission

On arrival in Wa Country, Bai Shu tested his psychic ability and found it active without suppression. He restrained Chen Xiaofei from immediately attacking a foreign man who harassed him, advising that they wait for the man to strike first while promising to help defend his teammate 198.

He later discovered Freedom Faction members excavating gray decay-preventing crystals. Their racist abuse escalated into a fight, and Wang Weihu joined him against five or six opponents. Both sustained injuries but held their ground until the rest of 3A arrived. Bai Shu also shot at a fleeing opponent carrying a crystal 200.

During the evacuation, he identified approaching mutant creatures and their weak points so the squads could advance efficiently. As monsters rampaged and a tsunami approached, he shot Jin Chuanqiong in the arm. Qin Luo subsequently ordered the team to abandon the pursuit and prioritize evacuation 205 207.

Fang Ming, M City, and Protection of Xu Duoduo’s Secret

When Xu Duoduo found a wanted post matching the remote intruder Fang Ming, Bai Shu compiled the fugitive’s background and sent it to both the team and Headquarters. Headquarters identified Fang Ming as almost certainly the rare Media-Type Mutant Ability User responsible for contacting them remotely. Bai Shu then fought alongside his teammates against the mutated rat swarm near the Mianshan Service Area 220.

After the discovery of Lizard People at M City Base, Bai Shu reported them to Headquarters. He later joined Chen Xiaofei and Wang Weihu in following Qin Luo and Xu Duoduo to their grassland date, partly out of concern and partly for amusement. He sensed the couple ahead, checked the area’s safety, and eventually urged the others to return once it was clear the pair were unharmed 234 236.

Following the public exposure of Xu Duoduo’s offensive spatial ability, Bai Shu checked for psychic eavesdropping and surveillance before discussing the matter with the squad. He stressed that her storage space remained undiscovered and that they needed a consistent explanation for her apparent new awakening. During the subsequent Headquarters meeting, he negotiated additional equipment, including a promised batch of new weapons, and asked about mutant-core-powered laser weapons 254 257.

Fifth-Tier Development and City B Visit

By the confrontation with mutant cockroaches, Bai Shu’s fifth-stage abilities allowed him to use Mental Control to disrupt their targeting. He continued supporting Qin Luo’s policy of frequent missions and advancement, arguing that greater strength was essential to protect both themselves and others 274 277.

He accepted Headquarters’ invitation for 3A to visit City B. During the visit, the Prophet Fei praised his marksmanship and predicted that his gun would eventually become more powerful and his mental power would allow him to control groups of enemies. These statements were predictions rather than demonstrations of a new advancement at the time 281 286 287.

City I Rescue and Sixth-Tier Breakthrough

While 3A traveled to the burning City I by airship, Bai Shu detected a miniature surveillance device following them. Xu Duoduo blocked its sight and sound with her Spatial Domain, allowing Chen Xiaofei to destroy it. On arrival, Bai Shu reported the emergency to Headquarters and remained alert while his teammates began rescue and firefighting work 341.

During the prolonged evacuation defense, he warned Qin Luo that a six-star octopus might possess a psychic-type core. After Qin Luo killed it, Xu Duoduo offered Bai Shu an earth-type six-star core, and Bai Shu left to assist Chen Xiaofei while Qin Luo returned to guard the gates 383.

Bai Shu, Wang Weihu, and Chen Xiaofei later fought a six-star Giant Zombie above their own tier. They gave each teammate room to push for a breakthrough, and all three reached the sixth tier. Bai Shu’s new full beast form was a giant flying squirrel, which he used to restrain two scavengers while Qin Luo questioned them 403 404 405.

In K City, Bai Shu identified an apparently deserted alley as likely concealed by an illusion rather than a modified subspace. After returning to human form, he demonstrated his newly unlocked Vision ability: more than a dozen mobile eyes providing independent viewpoints. The squad immediately recognized its value for battlefield surveillance 408 409.

Border Operations and Eighth-Tier Advancement

As international fighting intensified, Bai Shu warned that a full-scale war might be approaching. During later operations, he used Eye of Vision to scout approximately three hundred armed opponents, identify the proportion of ability users among them, and report that their strongest members were tier five 428 448.

When thirteen shadow monsters surrounded the base, Bai Shu reported their resistance to mental attacks, their predation on living creatures, and their unusually fast reactions. From an elevated sniping position, he used Eye of Vision to survey the battlefield and calculated one monster’s evasive movement closely enough to shoot its head 455.

After the extreme fighting, Bai Shu, Chen Xiaofei, and Wang Weihu were confirmed to have reached the eighth tier. Bai Shu reported that his arm had been bitten off twice and regenerated each time. He also mentioned the research papers he still wanted to write 467.

M Country Infiltration and Final Battlefield Coordination

During 3A’s infiltration of M Country, Bai Shu monitored the battle and guided Xu Duoduo into position above an underground arsenal. He and Chen Xiaofei investigated a lower level with her and identified the grotesque creatures there as experimental subjects with mutant cores embedded in their bodies. The team confiscated the subjects and equipment for destruction, along with the arsenal’s weapons, production machinery, and supplies 488.

After Professor Ji identified Xu Duoduo’s distress as an uncontrolled awakening of Omniscient Sense, Bai Shu congratulated her and Qin Luo on registering their marriage. He also urged her not to conceal future problems from her teammates, and she promised not to do so again 502.

During the final large-scale battle, Bai Shu used Eye of Vision to assist Headquarters’ Control Tower and eventually handled almost all battlefield coordination. He continued firing while directing teammates toward threats, including three late-stage nine-star monsters near Chen Xiaofei and a Shadow Fusion Monster approaching Wang Weihu. His command role allowed Qin Luo to concentrate on front-line attacks 508 510.

Interstellar Arc and Keeping 3A Together

When Chen Xiaofei and Wang Weihu returned injured from separately led missions, Bai Shu used his day off to care for them. He brought Chen Xiaofei to his own cleaner home, washed and dried him, provided meals for both injured men, and confiscated Wang Weihu’s Space Card to prevent him from smoking during recovery 525 526.

Without first consulting the two injured teammates, Bai Shu asked Headquarters to stop assigning them separate mission leadership. Chen Xiaofei challenged this decision, but Bai Shu maintained that he could not accept his teammates being hurt outside his sight. Qin Luo and Xu Duoduo subsequently agreed that Bai Shu, Chen Xiaofei, and Wang Weihu should remain together for the time being, settling the issue and improving Bai Shu’s mood 526 527.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall, thin, and scholarly-looking; his appearance makes it difficult for him to command survivors’ attention 10.
  • Later physique: Retains a tall, slender build and refined face despite his increasing offensive strength. He is reported to have grown another centimeter 188.
  • Complexion: Fair-skinned; his scholarly appearance makes him look androgynous when wearing an elf-style dress 410.
  • Glasses: Wore glasses before his eye mutation. Although he no longer needs them, he resumes wearing rimless glasses out of habit and because they give him a sense of security 8 18 44.
  • Casual clothing: Appears in a white shirt and black dress pants during a visit to Xu Duoduo’s apartment 18.
  • Later clothing: Wears a crisp blue-and-white padded jacket with a layered design in winter and continues favoring casual shirts with dress pants 358 436.
  • Animal form: Develops small ears and fur associated with a Siberian flying squirrel, also initially described as a Russian flying squirrel 48.
  • Full beast form: Becomes a giant, fluffy flying squirrel with fleshy pink paw pads. His initial full transformation cannot be maintained as long as Qin Luo’s because his energy reserves are lower 405 408.

Personality

Bai Shu is studious, analytical, and diligent about keeping the squad informed. He regularly checks the forum and research database, evaluates mission locations, and translates technical findings for teammates who have not followed the reports closely. His explanations about Xu Duoduo’s regression and possible growth period are presented as hypotheses rather than established facts 19 32 33 37 45.

His scholarly manner conceals a mischievous streak. He teases Qin Luo about his feelings for Xu Duoduo, calls Chen Xiaofei his “son,” and steals food from him during breakfast. He is also irritable immediately after waking, particularly when Chen Xiaofei makes noise 33 36 37.

He is protective of Xu Duoduo without treating her usefulness as his only concern. He objects to headquarters’ dismissive treatment of her, worries about her safety around mutant animals, and conceals sensitive details of her ability in official reports. When malicious gossip targets the squad, he advises Chen Xiaofei not to reward the instigator with anger 18 26 35.

His shrewdness is especially apparent in dealings with officials and hostile squads. He gathers evidence discreetly, presents it persuasively, and presses for benefits without being intimidated by senior leaders. He distinguishes between scheming against enemies and betraying teammates, rejecting Chen Xiaofei’s suggestion that he might sell out his own squad 105 257.

Bai Shu regards 3A as a family, although he often turns sincere sentiments into jokes about being Chen Xiaofei’s father and Wang Weihu being his mother. He is deeply distressed by injuries to his companions and becomes especially controlling about their recovery and mission arrangements when they are hurt 178 525 526 527.

He enjoys researching unusual subjects and admits that curiosity also gives him entertainment. He spends more than ten million points and signs a contract connected with this interest, describing it as a personal hobby. His ambition to write research papers remains important even after reaching the eighth tier 338 354 467.

He prefers cleanliness when circumstances permit, but this is not an absolute refusal to tolerate dirt: on missions he can sleep covered in blood and grime. Away from combat, he insists that Chen Xiaofei wash before lying down, dislikes being spat on by the Man-Eating Flower Babies, and hates summer’s sweaty discomfort 182 294 388.

Although his teasing can be excessive, he is capable of recognizing harm and apologizing. After frightening Chen Xiaofei with ghost stories, he serves him breakfast and apologizes, then later acknowledges Qin Luo’s warning that jokes should not go too far 332 337.

Abilities & Skills

Enhanced Eyesight

His initial mutation enhances his eyes, eliminates his need for corrective glasses, and enables him to pursue sniping 8 44.

  • Complements his role as the squad’s long-range shooter 8.
  • Remains part of his combat skill set after gaining flying-squirrel-derived abilities 50.

Sniping and Combat Positioning

Bai Shu is an excellent shot who rapidly surveys terrain, establishes firing positions, and remains focused despite nearby distractions 29 30 39.

  • Kills a mutated elephant using a rifle passed to him by Qin Luo, with Chen Xiaofei steadying him at the vehicle’s sunroof 7.
  • Uses rocks and trees for concealment and repeatedly relocates to prevent the snake-man from locating him 29 30.
  • His accuracy does not guarantee a killing shot: the snake-man repeatedly dodges attacks aimed at vital areas 30.
  • Uses elevated balconies and buildings to bring enemies within his firing range 306 455.
  • Combines Eye of Vision with predictive aiming to compensate for a shadow monster’s rapid evasive movement and shoot its head 455.
  • Remains a practiced close-quarters fighter despite his preference for ranged combat, holding his ground alongside Wang Weihu against several foreign ability users 200.
  • Identifies shooting and research as his specialties 417.

Flying-Squirrel-Derived Abilities

His Siberian flying squirrel mutation grants psychic abilities, brief bursts of flight, and enhanced jumping power 50.

  • Adds mobility to his existing eye enhancement, making him well suited to assassination 50.
  • Flight is brief rather than sustained 50.
  • Learns to climb buildings and glide from their roofs, taking shortcuts while conserving energy 52.
  • Can glide down independently rather than relying on Chen Xiaofei to carry him 277.
  • Is initially considered physically weaker than his teammates, making pairing with a more durable fighter preferable 52.
  • Later gains a giant full beast form, though maintaining it consumes ability energy and his initial duration is shorter than Qin Luo’s 405 408.

Psychic Abilities

The psychic functions initially left unspecified are later demonstrated through illusion, mental attacks, mental control, and sensory scouting 50 53 135 274 280.

  • Illusion: Disorients enemies and can cause them to attack one another. Used against the mutant bat swarm and zombie hordes 53 66.
  • Mental Attack: Can drive mutant insects away or redirect them toward another enemy 135 137.
  • Mental Control: Disrupts mutant cockroaches’ minds so they move aimlessly and cannot accurately target humans 274.
  • Psychic detection: Detects brain waves and helps locate nearby people, assess teammates’ condition, and monitor others without directly watching them 280 294 404.
  • Counter-surveillance: Checks for psychic ability users and other possible means of eavesdropping before discussing Xu Duoduo’s hidden abilities 254.
  • Exertion limit: Repeated psychic attacks gradually exhaust him. He avoids directly challenging the Mutant Beauty Tree’s mental power because of the risk of severe mental injury 137.
  • Target limitations: Mental attacks have little effect on robots and fail against some monsters, forcing him to use firearms instead. Shadow monsters also resist mental attacks 167 226 455.
  • Control difficulty: After reaching the sixth tier, his expanding psychic senses can pick up private activity unintentionally. Alcohol makes the ability harder to control, leading him to keep his distance until he can manage it better 440.

Vision / Eye of Vision

Bai Shu unlocks Vision, subsequently called Eye of Vision, after reaching the sixth tier. He summons more than a dozen remarkably lifelike eyes that resemble flat images rather than three-dimensional organs 408 440.

  • The eyes move through the air and provide multiple viewpoints 408.
  • Their appearance is recognized by Xu Duoduo as matching the eyes of the six-star octopus 383 408.
  • Supplements his existing psychic scouting with clearer visual information 409.
  • Allows surveillance from different corners of an area and broad observation of a battlefield 409 455.
  • Used to report enemy numbers, positions, armament, and ability levels before an engagement 448.
  • Supports coordination beyond 3A itself, including assistance to Headquarters’ Control Tower during the final battle 508.

Berserk

Berserk temporarily strengthens Bai Shu’s body. He inherits it from the mutant flying squirrel associated with his mutation 50.

  • Cannot be maintained for long 50.
  • Professor Ji advises him to test its duration and finish enemies before the effect ends 50.
  • The source creature burned its own energy for tremendous strength, but Bai Shu’s exact output is not demonstrated 50.

Eighth-Tier Regeneration

At the eighth tier, Bai Shu can regenerate severed limbs 467.

  • Reports that his arm was bitten off twice during the fighting and grew back on its own both times 467.
  • Retains clear memories of the amputations, distinguishing them from dreams or hallucinations 467.
  • His increased reserves do not make ability consumption irrelevant; he points out that developing an ultimate move would still create substantial energy demands 470.

Intelligence and Field Reporting

Bai Shu gathers information and turns field observations into reports useful to headquarters and other combat squads 10 17 31.

  • Assesses supply destinations and their known risks using his tablet 19.
  • Edits encounter footage and uploads mutant data 23 31.
  • Explains research on mutant cores, injections, and the importance of training rather than relying solely on drug-driven advancement 45.
  • Handles reward transfers and corrections to Xu Duoduo’s team profile 31 35.
  • Records Xu Duoduo’s training results and encourages incremental improvement 51.
  • Identifies mutant species, attack patterns, and weak points while the squad advances through dangerous territory 205.
  • Compiles information on wanted fugitives and shares it with teammates and Headquarters 220.
  • Researches full beast transformation, including the conditions for reverting and temporary animal-associated behavior 351.
  • Continues formulating theories about hostile abilities, including the need for Fang Ming to have something available to possess 373.
  • Closely follows Engineering Department developments and uses that knowledge in equipment negotiations 257.

Negotiation and Battlefield Command

  • Presents evidence of hostile squads’ misconduct while maintaining a courteous manner with Headquarters staff 105.
  • Negotiates additional weapons and supplies with senior leaders, using 3A’s contributions and combat needs to support his requests 257.
  • Helps maintain a unified explanation protecting Xu Duoduo’s undisclosed storage ability 254.
  • Takes over team command when Qin Luo is absent or occupied with front-line attacks 510.
  • Uses scouting information to assign threats, warn of ambushes, and direct enemy movements toward suitable teammates 508 510.
  • Eventually handles almost all battlefield coordination during the final large-scale battle 508.

Rescue and Support Work

  • Physically moves survivors out of danger during the mutant monkey attack 12.
  • Guards survivors and provides covering fire during evacuations 39.
  • Helps modify a bus for transporting rescued civilians 26.
  • Assists wounded teammates and drives the squad out of the snake-man battle area 30.
  • Monitors an intoxicated Chen Xiaofei’s condition through psychic detection while he showers 294.
  • Carries Chen Xiaofei when an ankle injury prevents easy use of stairs 525.
  • Provides hands-on care for injured teammates, including washing, meal preparation, dietary restrictions, and measures to prevent smoking during recovery 525 526.

After her Omniscient Sense diagnosis, he asks her not to hide future problems from the team 51 254 436 502.
  • Chen Xiaofei — Close teammate and frequent target of his teasing. Their antics include mock father–son arguments and disputes over food, but Bai Shu also helps him after serious injury 19 30 33 36. Their arguments usually resolve quickly, and Bai Shu becomes a dependable source of reassurance when Chen Xiaofei is frightened, despite sometimes causing the fright himself. In the Interstellar Arc, he provides intimate practical care for the injured Chen Xiaofei and insists that they not be separated on missions 332 335 390 525 526 527.
  • Wang Weihu — Teammate whose survivor-management skills he respects. They cooperate in guarding Xu Duoduo, modifying transport, and evacuating survivors 10 23 26 39. Bai Shu repeatedly casts him as Chen Xiaofei’s “mother” in their mock family jokes. They fight together against hostile foreign ability users and advance alongside Chen Xiaofei; later, Bai Shu supervises his recovery and takes his Space Card to prevent smoking 178 200 404 467 526.
  • Mu Enya — Fellow combat-team member. Bai Shu gives her spicy pickled radish in thanks for her team taking the night watch while 3A rests 37. He later helps the bride’s side during her wedding games, refusing Chen Xiaofei’s attempts to extract the hiding place of her bridal shoes 504.
