Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced-speed ability user | 24 | His original ability is identified as enhanced speed; no awakening scene or initial numerical rating is provided. |
| Recorded rating: 3.8 | 35 | A forum commenter cites his rating while comparing his speed-type ability with Xu Duoduo’s publicly listed profile. This is a reported rating, not a depicted breakthrough. |
| Increased ability strength | 43 | Ability monitoring confirms that he has grown slightly stronger following the three-star mutant snake-man battle. |
| Injection-enhanced speed, wind ability, and Gyrfalcon traits | 48 49 | The injection derived from his speed-type East Sea Azure mutant core grants wings and talons, along with a wind-type ability that can complement his speed. Professor Ji advises him to develop techniques and adapt his training to the transformation. |
| Demonstrated tornado-and-blade combat | 66 | Shreds zombies with small tornadoes and throwing knives, putting the offensive potential of his wind ability into practice. |
| Demonstrated operational flight | 167 168 | Takes off during the City E robot battle and scouts ahead from the air, finding routes and reporting enemy positions. |
| Fourth tier | 223 | During the M City mission, he retrieves all his throwing knives with a small tornado. The passage identifies 3A’s ability users as fourth tier and emphasizes their refined control. |
| Fifth tier | 274 337 | Fights airborne with controlled rows of throwing knives. Professor Ji later confirms that he, Bai Shu, and Wang Weihu are among the strongest ability users despite Chen considering his fifth-tier strength inadequate beside his captain and Xu Duoduo. |
| Six-Star mutant-core injection | 397 401 | Receives a Six-Star mutant-core injection and is given medicine with instructions to report side effects. Ability overload causes severe physical distress and amplified emotions; the injection’s star rating is distinct from his own tier. |
| Sixth tier and full Gyrfalcon transformation | 404 405 408 | Achieves a giant Gyrfalcon form and fires hundreds of Wind Blades with one wingbeat. His feather tips have a metallic quality. Returning to human form is initially involuntary and leaves his wings present. |
| Expanded sixth-tier wind control | 416 | Remotely directs a gigantic tornado that sweeps up and shreds a zombie horde. |
| Hurricane and feather-arrow attack | 463 | During prolonged fighting and widespread breakthroughs, appears in full Gyrfalcon form, sweeps away airborne monsters with a powerful hurricane, and uses his feathers as arrows to destroy the swarm. His exact tier at this moment is not individually stated. |
| Eighth tier confirmed | 474 | Professor Ji confirms that Chen Xiaofei, Bai Shu, and Wang Weihu have reached eighth tier and prescribes recovery medicines. |
| Late eighth tier | 507 | Explicitly identified as a late eighth-tier Gyrfalcon. Can transform every feather on his body into a metal feather and retains exceptional speed. |
| Mass Wind Blade ultimate move | 510 | Unleashes countless Wind Blades in midair to reap monsters’ heads during the final large-scale fighting; no further tier increase is specified. |
Background / History
Chen Xiaofei attended middle school with Xu Duoduo for three years. She remained their class monitor even after classes were reassigned. He remembers her strong grades and the respect she commanded; despite his later teasing, he says that his teenage feelings toward her were respect rather than romantic attraction 9 34 35.
Before their apocalypse missions, Chen Xiaofei and the other three men in Qin Luo’s squad had military backgrounds. Their established teamwork allows them to follow Qin Luo’s decisions quickly and coordinate under dangerous conditions 23.
The squad also has a confidential connection to the Four Continents veterans. When Cao Wenzhou and the veterans reunite with them, Gluttonous Beast is surprised that they already know each other. Cao Wenzhou and Vermilion Bird remind the younger team to use code names and protect the covert unit’s secrecy around outsiders. The veterans later describe the younger combatants as worthy of the training they received 298 321.
Chen remembers lying on his mother’s belly when he was one or two years old. As an adult, he understood that its wrinkled lines were stretch marks and reflected what she had endured. Seeing similarly patterned ground during a flight unexpectedly brings back that memory and makes him miss her; Wang Weihu silently comforts him 467.
In the interstellar extras, Chen has begun leading rookie combat teams. An encounter with Star Insects exposes his tendency to relax too soon when he believes a battle has ended, resulting in an injury and renewed concern over whether he and Wang Weihu should lead missions without Bai Shu 525 527 528.
Appearance
- Baby face: His youthful appearance makes survivors less inclined to listen when he tries to manage them. His face is also described as almost always seeming to smile 10 62.
- Height and build: Stands 1.8 meters tall, with good proportions and a compact, sturdy build. His muscles remain well proportioned, although he later wishes he could become bulkier and complains that inactivity during injury recovery has softened them 62 408 528.
- Short hair: Frequently becomes tousled or resembles a bird’s nest after sleeping. His usual hairstyle is a buzz cut; during the extreme cold, it grows long enough for him to tie a tiny ponytail 26 33 36 62 198.
- Partial Gyrfalcon form: Develops whitish-gray wings with white spots on his back and feet transformed into talons; the rest of his appearance remains normal 48.
- Full Gyrfalcon form: Becomes a giant falcon with enormous white wings scattered with black speckles. The tips of his feathers gleam with a metallic sheen and feel cold like metal 404 405.
- Clothing preference: Likes comfortable outdoor sportswear, particularly a major brand he had rarely been willing to buy before the apocalypse. Later outfits include orange-accented clothing and an orange-and-white T-shirt he particularly likes 38 240 397.
- Disguise: Wears a short witch outfit during a team disguise operation. Qin Luo remarks that adding a wig would make him difficult to identify as a man, while Xu Duoduo praises his appearance and supplies safety shorts 410.
Personality
Chen Xiaofei is excitable, expressive, and quick to tease his friends. He repeatedly jokes about Qin Luo’s closeness with Xu Duoduo and provokes Bai Shu over his flying-squirrel transformation. His enthusiasm can become reckless: when celebrating his new wings, he crashes into Qin Luo and Xu Duoduo, then sincerely apologizes and offers to buy her mutant cores 33 37 48.
Food is a recurring source of enthusiasm. He eagerly requests snacks, competes with Bai Shu over condiments and breakfast, and lavishly praises Xu Duoduo’s cooking. After earning mission points, he treats the team to hot pot and purchases Research Center-approved mutant shrimp 19 20 36 44 45.
His joking stops when work becomes dangerous. He grows alert during night watch, keeps idle survivors working, and becomes more vigilant about Xu Duoduo’s safety after dark. He is also compassionate toward orphaned children and openly credits Xu Duoduo for saving the squad rather than accepting undeserved praise 12 27 31 39 40.
Chen is particularly afraid of ghosts and ghostlike surprises. He distinguishes a powerful opponent from one that appears silently to frighten him, finding the latter especially distressing. Bai Shu’s ghost stories once frighten him so badly while drunk that he cries, seeks company at midnight, and ultimately sleeps in Bai Shu’s room. Even Bai Shu’s roaming Eye of Vision can startle him 60 332 417.
His attachment to his teammates is unusually open. He dislikes being left alone, habitually stays close to Bai Shu or Xu Duoduo, and turns to Wang Weihu when neither is available. Xu Duoduo recognizes that staying together makes the whole team feel secure, but Chen expresses that need most visibly. Despite treating Qin Luo as a friend, he retains an instinctive apprehension toward teachers and authority figures and is sometimes intimidated by his captain 280 301 323 440.
He frequently uses fake tears, exaggerated grievances, and deliberately sickening baby talk to entertain or provoke the others. His declarations that his friendship with Bai Shu is over rarely last; Qin Luo observes that Chen has little lasting temper and is easily coaxed into reconciliation. His constant chatter also keeps the team’s gatherings lively and prevents awkward silences 203 218 374 390 444 514.
His playfulness occasionally affects his judgment. He gets bitten after teasing mildly venomous Man-Eating Flower Babies and can become distracted in battle. During the interstellar mission, he underestimates the possibility of enemy reinforcements and is affected by the Star Insects’ mind-altering properties. Qin Luo treats stronger willpower and discipline as necessary parts of his subsequent training 161 320 525.
Despite often complaining about being single, he becomes shy when an older woman tries to introduce her daughter and says he is not planning to date. His loudly proclaimed love for Xu Duoduo is explicitly described by him as respectful admiration rather than romantic love 266 360.
Abilities & Skills
Enhanced Speed
His original ability increases his movement speed and makes him the squad’s most agile member 24 42.
- Enemy harassment: Draws the mutant snake-man’s attention through constant movement, occasionally wounds it, and makes it dizzy while the other teammates attack 30.
- Scouting: Checks the granary compound for threats and quickly surveys its thirty-two granaries 42.
- Rapid rescue: Pulls an allied fighter from another country away from a centipede’s open mouth with quick reactions 206.
- Later development: Remains exceptionally fast as a late eighth-tier Gyrfalcon 507.
- Limits: His speed does not prevent the three-star snake-man from overwhelming and throwing him aside. Later shadow monsters react approximately twice as fast as the team and nearly catch him when he flies too low 29 30 455.
Gyrfalcon Transformation
His injection produces wings and taloned feet without replacing his human head or changing the rest of his body 48.
- Flight: Initially announces that he can fly and enthusiastically flaps his new wings. Later demonstrates controlled flight in combat and sustained aerial scouting during the City E mission 48 167 168.
- Aerial reconnaissance: Reports obstacles, humanoid robots, and mutant mechanical birds from hundreds of meters ahead, helping the squad choose routes and prepare attacks 168.
- Transport: Carries a frightened Cheetah Squad member down into M Country in his claws instead of requiring him to descend by rope 488.
- Adaptation: Initially needs to adjust to the transformation and train around its advantages 49.
- Full beast form: At sixth tier, transforms into a giant Gyrfalcon and launches hundreds of Wind Blades with a single beat of his wings 404.
- Communication in full form: Cannot speak in the depicted full transformation and instead communicates through expressive movements, including puffing out his chest, patting himself with a wing, and nuzzling Xu Duoduo 405.
- Feather weapons: Fei predicts that he will be able to use his wing feathers for lethal attacks. Chen later fulfills that prediction by firing feathers as arrows to wipe out an airborne swarm 287 463.
- Metal feathers: His sixth-tier feather tips already have a metallic sheen; by late eighth tier, he can transform every feather on his body into metal 404 405 507.
- Transformation limits: Dense attacks from the Mutant Beauty Tree prevent him from getting airborne. After his sixth-tier transformation, he initially returns to human form unexpectedly, retaining his wings but losing his clothing 137 408.
Wind Ability
The East Sea Azure mutant core grants a wind-type ability in addition to its speed-related benefits 49.
- Speed synergy: Wind and enhanced speed can complement each other to increase his mobility further 49.
- Offensive development: Professor Ji suggests developing lethal techniques and cites tornadoes as an example of wide-area attacks. Chen subsequently demonstrates small tornadoes combined with throwing knives to shred zombies 49 66.
- Tornado-and-blade combinations: Sweeps enemies into a tornado and adds throwing knives to cut them apart. Against mutant robots, the attack leaves piles of recyclable mechanical parts 156 346.
- Wind Blades: Develops wind attacks strong enough to damage enemies without adding throwing knives. His varied assaults disorient the No. 2 Giant Zombie, and his later blades cut curved gashes into the ground when they miss their targets 403 455.
- Large-area attacks: At sixth tier, directs a gigantic tornado from a distance to shred a zombie horde. Later produces a hurricane powerful enough to clear a monster-filled sky and unleashes countless Wind Blades as an ultimate move 416 463 510.
- Fine control and retrieval: Uses a small tornado to gather throwing knives and return them to his Space Card. Also describes his wind as an effective separator for extracting mutant cores and later gathers cores remotely during zombie fighting 223 293 305.
- Road clearance: Uses tornadoes to move wrecked vehicles off a frozen highway, allowing the convoy to advance 91.
- Disposal support: Helps burn decomposing mutant animal carcasses by supplying wind to the team’s coordinated incineration operation 417.
- Environment: Tests his wind ability upon arriving in Wa Country and finds no suppression 198.
- Limits: His tornado cannot sweep up the Mutant Beauty Tree’s attacking branches during that battle, while the toughness of those branches wears down his throwing knives 137.
Combat and Field Operations
- Firearms: Uses gunfire against the pursuing snake-man and kills trapped zombies while scavenging with Xu Duoduo. Continues using firearms against thawed zombies and during later convoy travel 29 38 39 379 417.
- Sniper support: Steadies Bai Shu by holding his legs while he fires through the vehicle’s sunroof 7.
- Threat assessment: Calmly identifies the elephant’s level-one mutation and describes its strengthened limbs, increased hair growth, and ancestral traits 7.
- Survivor protection: Helps gather survivors during the monkey attack, checks attendance before evacuation, and gives Zhao Gang driving instructions 12 28.
- Field treatment: Disinfects and bandages his injuries after the snake-man battle; his ability-user constitution helps the bleeding stop. Later helps Xu Duoduo bandage wounded survivors 31 374.
- Ability instruction: Helps Xu Duoduo practice by explaining that she should concentrate to channel her ability and attempt skills 51.
- Backup communication: Returns to the team after Xu Duoduo uses a wooden whistle to reach him when electronic communications fail in the Mutant Paradise Tree’s territory 134.
- Rookie guidance: Helps supply rookie squads with insulated coats and teaches cold-weather layering. Later advises a frightened Cheetah Squad member that overcoming fear and training harder can improve survival on the battlefield 91 488.
- Rookie-team leadership: Leads a rookie combat team in the interstellar period. While he recovers, its members repeatedly ask him to return after experiencing Bai Shu’s stricter training 528.
- Operational weakness: Can lose focus at dangerous moments. Wang Weihu shields him from a five-star vulture’s Wind Blade, and his later interstellar injury prompts a prescribed disciplinary regimen 320 525.
Other Skills
- Snow sculpting: Shapes lifelike snow figures of all four male teammates’ animal forms and a rabbit representing Xu Duoduo, surprising her with his dexterity 338.
- Mutant ecology observations: Notices that mutated ants may be arriving in time with repeating plant-growth cycles, an observation Bai Shu acknowledges as perceptive 143.
Ability Overload and Recovery
Six-Star mutant-core injections cause severe side effects in Chen and his teammates. Chen describes feeling physically unbearable distress and nearly losing control, while the team explains that ability overload also amplifies desires and emotions. Bai Shu hears him crying and rolling around in bed and places him in a bathtub to soak, helping him through the episode 397 401.
A later bout of fever is dominated by overwhelming sleepiness rather than the same level of wakeful distress. Chen sleeps through most of it, getting up mainly when hungry. He explains the experience during the team’s medical examinations, and Professor Ji subsequently prescribes recovery medicines after confirming their new tiers 471 474.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Storage Space Card wristband: Originally holds 100 cubic meters. Weapons and food occupy part of its capacity, limiting additional stockpiling. Its contents are visible to Gluttonous Beast and headquarters, so it offers no privacy. Gluttonous Beast later upgrades every 3A member’s Space Card to 1,000 cubic meters 8 429.
- Firearms: Carries a gun during scavenging and uses gunfire in combat 29 38.
- Earpiece: Used for squad coordination during the snake-man battle and later aerial scouting. In his full Gyrfalcon form, it hangs around his neck 29 168 404.
- Miniature Bombs: Receives explosives distributed by Qin Luo before the squad engages the snake-man 29.
- Branded belt and wallet: Obtains them while opening delivery packages with Xu Duoduo and Qin Luo 27.
- Artisan Department voucher: Receives an individually bound, nontransferable full-coverage weapon voucher and requests concealed weapons suited to his wind ability 56.
- Sleeve Crossbow and throwing blades: Receives an antique-styled Sleeve Crossbow with ten cubic meters of internal storage containing assorted small blades. The blades automatically return after striking targets and are made of a special material that repels blood 62.
- Throwing-knife upkeep: Tough plant monsters can dull or bend his blades, causing him considerable distress over damage to his weapons 137 226.
- Wooden whistle: Wears a whistle around his neck as a backup communication device. Xu Duoduo uses hers to reach him when their earpieces and wristbands stop working 134.
- Insulated gloves: Uses gloves supplied by Old Dai’s combat team while making snow sculptures and remarks that they keep his hands warm 338.
- Gas mask: Receives masks from Xu Duoduo when thawed zombies produce an intolerable stench; also wears a gas mask while fighting shadow monsters 379 455.
- Temporary Flying Arrows: Uses arrows from a black-market Space Card during an evacuation because the team’s regular weapons are inaccessible inside Gluttonous Beast’s Space Card 381.
- Recovery medicines: Receives medicine following the Six-Star injections and after the team’s eighth-tier advancement 397 474.
- Planet P303 burn ointment: Xu Duoduo obtains special ointment for his interstellar injuries, and Qin Luo personally brings back two boxes for the injured teammates 527.
Relationships
- Xu Duoduo — Former class monitor and current teammate. Calls her “Little Class Monitor,” values her both personally and for her supply ability, and helps protect its secrecy. He later promises to buy mutant cores to support her growth 8 9 13 50.
- Frequently seeks snacks and comfort from her after losing arguments with Bai Shu. He explicitly describes his affection for her as respectful admiration rather than romantic love 203 221 266 298.
- Admires her increasing combat strength and says that fighting beside her makes him feel safe. Her Spatial Protective Shield also allows him to attack airborne mutant cockroaches without being knocked away 202 274.
- Shares his need to keep the team together with her; she understands his anxiety about being left behind. After his interstellar injury, she searches for special burn medicine on his behalf 301 525 527.
- Qin Luo — Captain and longtime friend. Teases him about Xu Duoduo but trusts his judgment during missions and accepts his decision to let her eat a mutant core 14 23 33.
- Frequently imitates Qin’s romantic remarks and teases his full wolf form, but is also somewhat intimidated by his authority 66 120 323 351 425.
- Qin intervenes when Bai Shu’s ghost stories frighten him, reminding Bai not to use a teammate’s fears against him 332.
- Following the interstellar injury, Qin prescribes five thousand push-ups and three rounds of Nine-Star combat drills daily for ten days once Chen recovers. He also personally delivers the ointment Xu Duoduo obtains 525 527.
- Bai Shu — Teammate and frequent sparring partner in jokes. Their disputes include stolen chili sauce, confiscated spicy radishes, mock father-and-son claims, and teasing about Bai Shu’s animal form 19 33 36 48.
- Despite repeated declarations of broken friendship, their quarrels usually end quickly. Chen considers Bai his best buddy, and Xu Duoduo recognizes Bai as his dependable refuge when he is frightened 335 390 525.
- Bai apologizes after taking ghost-related teasing too far, serves him breakfast, and accepts responsibility for comforting him. Chen forgives him and later often sleeps in Bai’s bed when afraid 332 526.
- Bai helps him through ability-overload distress, previously carries him after a sprained ankle, and supervises his interstellar recovery by bathing him, drying his hair, feeding him, and enforcing dietary restrictions 401 525 526.
- Bai presses Headquarters to stop separating the teammates for missions after Chen and Wang Weihu are injured. Chen initially objects to the unilateral decision but becomes pleased by how much Bai cares about them 526 527.
- Wang Weihu — Teammate whose ability to manage survivors he admires. They fight alongside each other and suffer serious injuries in the snake-man battle; Chen later teases Wang about his tiger transformation 10 29 30 48.
- Turns to Wang for company and protection, while Wang carries him when his legs are weak and shields him when he becomes distracted during battle 315 320 323.
- Chen stays behind to care for Wang when he develops a 40°C fever 429.
- In the interstellar extras, Chen enthusiastically investigates Wang’s romantic prospects and follows him toward a tavern despite still being under Bai Shu’s recovery restrictions 528.
- Zhao Gang — Rescued survivor entrusted with driving the evacuation bus. Chen checks that everyone is aboard and urges him to stay focused despite danger 28 29.
- Cao Wenzhou and the Four Continents Team — Veteran associates connected to the squad’s confidential covert background. They trained the younger teammates, acknowledge their progress, and reinforce secrecy around outsiders 298 321.
- Professor Ji — Researcher who explains Chen’s new wind ability, encourages independent skill development, monitors the team’s progression, and reassures him that fifth tier already places him among the best ability users 49 337 474.
- Fei — Prophet whose prediction of lethal feather-based attacks gives Chen something to anticipate. Chen later praises photographs taken of Fei’s awakening during the wedding gathering 287 521.
- Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao — Friends and research-related contacts of 3A. Da Qiao offers an antidote after Chen provokes a mildly venomous Man-Eating Flower Baby, while Chen remarks that Xiao Qiao is prickly and seldom says what she really means 161 184.
- Fang Ming — Enemy whom Chen repeatedly vows to punish. He promises to kill Fang’s revived copy if 3A finds him and can barely restrain his anger when the team confronts him again 335 474 510.
