Background

Before entering the game, Yang Yi spent five years bedridden with paralysis. He awakens aboard a ruined ship with his mobility restored, but must immediately survive an ocean where the pursuing Black Fog kills players who fall behind 1 8.

His starting vessel, the ghost ship Nightmare, has no provisions. Its curses impair sleep and prevent normal fishing catches, leaving him dependent on abnormal seafood, salvaged resources, and eventually trade 2 3.

Personality

Yang Yi is intensely persistent. His previous paralysis gives him a reference point worse than many of his early hardships, and he refuses to despair even as corpse toxin weakens him. Survival takes priority over disgust: he eats raw abyssal fish and other disturbing food when necessary 4 8.

He becomes markedly more cautious after a supposedly defeated Drowned Dead attacks him again. Thereafter, he confirms kills from a distance, investigates suspicious offers, and plans ambushes rather than accepting favorable appearances at face value. He kills the pirate who attacks him without psychological distress, but hesitates to kill Su Na when she has shown him kindness and no clear hostility 5 9 10 14 39.

Independence matters strongly to him. He wants control over his own fate, rejects fleet recruitment, and refuses to let apparently predictive nightmares dictate his decisions. His self-preservation does not exclude cooperation: he shares survival information, rescues Su Na, and agrees to help Yu Dawei escape the Black Fog 24 26 27 30 32 34.

Abilities & Skills

Iron Will and Frenzy State

Iron Will combines resistance to mental collapse with a combat state activated by low Sanity 1 6.

  • Permanent effects: Maximum Spirit +1; Sanity cannot fall below 1; prevents suicide caused by Sanity loss 1.
  • Frenzy trigger: Sanity reaches the talent’s low-Sanity threshold, described initially as 50 or below and in activation messages as below 50 1 6 16.
  • Attribute changes: Strength +2, Agility +1, Constitution +1, Spirit −2 6.
  • Mental protection: Immunity to most negative mental effects, including charm, mind control, fear, and despair 6.
  • Endurance: Ignores pain and fatigue; consumes Vitality when stamina is exhausted 6 27.
  • Limits: Frenzy alone cannot raise attributes above 10. Injuries can still impede movement despite the absence of pain 6.

Yang Yi remains capable of planning while frenzied. Su Na nevertheless observes that the state intensifies his desire to kill an opponent, even at the risk of his own death 6 18.

Refuse Death

Refuse Death is a hidden talent unlocked by facing death three times, not by killing three people as Yang Yi initially suspects 9 22.

  • Trigger: Vitality falls below 10, or he receives fatal damage 22.
  • Protection: Vitality cannot fall below 1 for five minutes 22.
  • Attribute changes: All attributes except Spirit +2; Spirit −2; Sanity −50 22.
  • Combination: The Sanity reduction can activate Frenzy, stacking the two talents’ bonuses 22.
  • Exceptional limit: Unlike Frenzy, Refuse Death can exceed mortal attribute limits 22.
  • Aftereffect: For 24 hours, all attributes except Spirit suffer −2, and Refuse Death cannot activate during this weakened state 22.

Spider’s Kiss

Spider’s Kiss lets Yang Yi understand the Tinder Wool Spiders’ communication 46.

  • Uses their reactions to food to help lure them into consuming Dead Spider Potion 46.
  • Does not establish control over them; he remains wary of spiders boarding his ship 46.

Observation and Improvised Combat

Yang Yi compensates for limited combat experience by identifying enemy behavior and exploiting terrain or available tools 5 22.

  • Circles the raised helm platform to evade a slower Drowned Dead while waiting for his pistol’s cooldown 5.
  • Uses the flintlock as a hammer against the captain’s skeleton and distracts it with the weapon before strengthening himself 6.
  • Poisons an arrow with Cystic Spiny Puffer toxin, then follows the fleeing pirate until the poison takes effect 9.
  • Exploits the sharks’ forward-only leaps to dodge and cut their gills 22.
  • Uses the Delicious Chef’s Knife to make a tree attractive to a food-obsessed giant 48.

Survival and Attribute Training

Yang Yi learns how ordinary activities translate into attribute experience 15.

  • Strength, Constitution, Agility: Physical exercise; injury followed by recovery also grants Constitution experience 15.
  • Spirit: Sanity fluctuations, particularly severe losses followed by recovery 15.
  • Perception: Fishing, shooting, and operating grappling hooks 15.
  • Practices marksmanship to compensate for his pistol’s unreliability, though he remains far from a sharpshooter early on 12.
  • Builds noise traps and a raft, gathers island resources, and navigates between giant worms for eight hours during the storm 7 12 18 26.

Equipment & Vessels

Weapons and Personal Equipment

  • Rusted flintlock / Glimmer Flintlock — Powerful pistol recovered from the dead captain. Frequently misfires and has a one-minute cooldown; its abnormal report can reduce Sanity. Later passages show it operating in cannon mode 1 4 5 12 27 40.
  • Sea Serpent’s Fang — Short sword obtained through the Monster Gacha Machine. Initially causes mild paralysis and can slightly damage Otherworldly Demons; fire infusion later adds burns and fire poison 19 24.
  • Pirate Longbow — Reduces the strength required to draw and slightly improves accuracy. Yang Yi first uses it to deliver puffer toxin to the attacking pirate 9.
  • Bloodstained ornate pirate outfit — Grants Agility +1. Wearing it causes continuous Sanity loss unless the wearer has at least 8 Spirit, a requirement Yang Yi meets; putting it on can still cause an immediate Sanity reduction 9 10 14.
  • Barnacle-covered fishing rod — Good-quality tool/relic that reduces normal fish catches and slightly increases unidentified-object catches 2.
  • Greedy Stomach / Stomach Pouch — Storage relic acquired from Shen Guanquan. Opening or using it reduces Sanity; Yang Yi later keeps backup supplies, silk sacs, and Regeneration Potions inside 34 50.
  • Delicious Chef’s Knife — Makes a cut tree emit an enticing fragrance, allowing Yang Yi to redirect the giant’s appetite 48.
  • Heart-protecting mirror — Newly acquired protective equipment taken on his expedition into the spider nest; its precise effects are not provided 50.

Vessels

Vessel / Stage Chapter Documented Features
Nightmare — Level 1 2 Durability 300; capacity 400 units; speed 40 knots. Approximately 12 meters long. Causes nightmares, reduces sleep-based Energy recovery by 75%, and cannot catch normal fish.
Nightmare — Level 2 11 Upgraded after dismantling the pirate ship and obtaining medical treatment. Capacity increases to 1,000 units; expansion options become available.
Nightmare destroyed 26 A giant worm splits the ship in two despite Yang Yi shooting it at close range.
Nightmare Star — Level 2 27 30 Rebuilt following the ship-merger plan with Su Na. Approximately 30 meters long; durability 1,000; capacity 3,000 units; speed 60 knots. Retains the Nightmare’s curses and gains Astrology and Peering.
  • Astrology: Displays the surrounding sea within 150 nautical miles and supports vibration alerts when other players appear 30.
  • Peering: Searches a ship or player name to obtain ship coordinates and an image; limited to one target per day 30.
  • Nightmare drawback: On the merged vessel, the sleep penalty affects only the captain 30.
  • Witch Laboratory: Yang Yi approves Su Na’s laboratory after seeing her develop an original Energy-restoring potion, postponing his preferred cannon construction 32.
  • Level 3 requirement: By the Hu Wei incident, he has sufficient ordinary materials for another upgrade but still lacks the required Otherworldly Demon corpse 41.

Relationships

  • Su Na — Initially a suspicious fellow captive, later his sailing partner and laboratory specialist. She rescues and treats him repeatedly; he supports her research but restricts laboratory access when her obsession damages her health. Her detailed observation diary alarms him, though he ultimately leaves her unharmed 14 18 19 32 37 43.
  • Xu Da — Captain of the Gale and an early friend. Warns Yang Yi against posting sanity-damaging fish images and later invites him into the Gale Brigade; Yang Yi declines 3 32.
  • Yu Dawei — Captain of the Iron Will. Supplies the timber needed to rebuild the Nightmare Star in exchange for towing assistance; subsequently seeks a closer friendship with Yang Yi 30 31.
  • He Qi — Captain of the Fisherman. Credits Yang Yi’s guidance with giving him the courage to pass the giant worms and sends a Low-Tier Abyss Soulstone in thanks 25.
  • Zhou Dai — Trading contact who exchanges three bottles of Holy Water for Yang Yi’s Siren items and a refresher 19.
  • Shen Guanquan — Captain of the Hope and leader of the New World Fleet. Buys Yang Yi’s Pirate Ship Blueprint for supplies, currency, and the Greedy Stomach; Yang Yi refuses recruitment and remains suspicious of his fleet 34.
  • Hu Wei — Hostile trader who lures players toward a dangerous island and salvages their ships. Yang Yi ambushes him for information, but Hu Wei commits suicide; spiders emerge from his corpse, and Yang Yi is subsequently found to be infested 39 40 41.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Days aboard the Nightmare

Yang Yi’s opening struggle centers on securing food and water while surviving his own vessel. He kills a Human-Head Octopus, a Drowned Dead, and the animated captain’s skeleton, but the encounters leave him injured and infected with corpse toxin. Raw sardines add food poisoning to his deteriorating condition 3 4 5 6 7.

On the fifth day, a pirate attacks while Yang Yi is near death. Yang Yi turns the encounter around with intimidation and poison, kills the attacker, and dismantles his ship. Trade then gives him access to Holy Water and bandages, allowing him to recover and upgrade the Nightmare 9 10 11 12.

Siren Captivity and Alliance with Su Na

An anonymous island tip leads Yang Yi toward supplies, but he subsequently spends three days under the Sirens’ charm. Su Na wakes him, and he negotiates her rescue in exchange for resources and chart guidance. Frenzy breaks the Sirens’ mental hold, enabling him to fight back 12 14 16.

The pair escape the flooding island on a raft. Yang Yi kills an attacking sea snake underwater but nearly drowns afterward; Su Na rescues him and administers CPR. They then agree to sail together through the storm 18 19.

Storm Sea and the Nightmare Star

Delayed by captivity, Yang Yi falls behind the main body of survivors. During a shark attack, Refuse Death awakens and allows him to reverse a near-fatal situation. The defeated sharks become food and gacha materials 20 22 23.

Giant worms later destroy the Nightmare. Yang Yi brings the unconscious Su Na to an island, where she proposes merging their ships. With the Black Fog approaching, timber supplied by Yu Dawei makes rebuilding possible, and the Nightmare Star launches with the Iron Will in tow 26 27 29 30.

Preparing for Extreme Cold

After escaping the storm, Yang Yi invests in Su Na’s potion research and trades away the Pirate Ship Blueprint. Seeking warm clothing, he contacts Hu Wei about a Tinder Wool Sweater, but investigates the suspicious arrangement before committing to it. He and Su Na reverse Hu Wei’s trap by ambushing him aboard their own ship 31 32 34 37 39.

Tinder Wool Spider Island

Following Hu Wei’s death, Yang Yi discovers that tiny spiders inhabit his bloodstream. Traveling roughly 200 nautical miles from the island causes unbearable itching, and a later attack forces Su Na to operate on him 40 41 43.

Yang Yi uses Spider’s Kiss and poisoned bait to weaken the island’s spiders. He and Su Na also encounter the Good Luck’s captain, transformed into a voracious giant. By the final documented chapter, Su Na is studying the Glutton’s corpse while Yang Yi returns alone to locate the spider nest and eliminate the island’s remaining dangers 46 48 50.
