Background
Johnny and the other members of the Fantastic Four gained their powers after visiting another dimension. By his first appearance, the team had possessed those powers for only a few weeks and was fighting Victor von Doom on Madison Avenue 13 30.
Peter Parker joined that battle and subsequently became Johnny’s coworker at the Baxter Foundation. Their friendship developed through laboratory work, vehicle projects, and repeated battles against threats including Doom, Hydra, and Lizard Man 14 31 64 76 212.
Personality
Johnny is brash, theatrical, and quick to joke, including during combat. He initially mocks Peter’s superhero name and spider-bite origin, but drops the teasing when he learns Peter invented his own webbing. His enthusiasm for engineering is particularly evident when Peter asks him to help rebuild a DeLorean 13 14 64.
His teasing often extends to flirtation and tactlessness. He approaches Jean enthusiastically despite Scott’s interference, flirts with Mayday without knowing she is Peter’s daughter, and fails to understand Gwen’s distress after bluntly describing Connors’s crimes 75 82 209. When Peter eventually reveals Mayday’s parentage, Johnny becomes visibly embarrassed and insists they never discuss it again 185.
Despite his irreverence, Johnny reliably answers calls for help. He rushes to the Stark Expo, checks on Peter afterward, and returns to assist with the cleanup. Peter later observes that Johnny has matured since beginning his relationship with Liz 19 20 104. His concern is also evident when he struggles to say goodbye to Ben and blames himself while Reed undergoes emergency treatment 172 223.
Abilities & Skills
Dimensional-Energy Flames
Johnny can engulf his body in flames and project fire from his hands. Peter’s tests identify his body as a conduit for energy from another dimension rather than a conventional fire consuming surrounding oxygen. The Ancient One later confirms that the Fantastic Four unconsciously draw on dimensional energy to use their powers 15 171.
- Fire projection: Launches fireballs, sustained streams, and large pillars of flame 14 31 221.
- Metal melting: Burns through Hammer drones and melts the joints of Vulture’s mechanical wings 19 94.
- Sand vitrification: Converts Sandman’s body into glass; Peter’s vibrational gloves help make their later combined attack decisive 75 77.
- Controlled heating: Heats frozen pizza and applies fingertip flames when testing Peter’s fireproof suit 14 143 210.
- Defensive limitations: Doom’s armor withstands his fireballs, and Lizard Man initially endures his sustained attacks with little apparent effect 14 207.
Flight
Johnny flies while surrounded by flames, using fiery propulsion for rapid movement and aerial combat 19.
- Emergency response: Reaches the Stark Expo ahead of his teammates and attacks drones threatening Peter’s escape route 19.
- Aerial rescue: Catches Harry after Vulture releases him and carries Captain America out of Sandman’s reach 77 94.
- Passenger transport: Carries Susan to Osborn Tower 210.
- Speed limit: Cannot fly from Germany to New York quickly enough to provide immediate help during the impending Chitauri invasion 58.
Engineering and Research
Johnny maintains his own laboratory and workshop at the Baxter Building. He identifies himself as an inventor and later devotes time to theoretical research 14 64 196.
- Vehicle engineering: Helps build Peter’s replacement electric motor and upgrades the DeLorean’s suspension, tires, glazing, and interior 64.
- Experimental systems: Collaborates with Peter on the car’s flight capability and secretly installed repulsor cannons 64.
- Technical judgment: Recognizes that Wyndham would detect deliberately omitted information in a falsified serum formula 78.
- Equipment testing: Tests Peter’s unstable-molecule combat suit with his flames, confirming that the material resists them 210.
Weaknesses
- Electrical attacks: Doom overloads Johnny’s nervous system, extinguishing his flames and knocking him unconscious 14.
- Energy weapons: A Doom Robot’s attack extinguishes his flames and sends him falling; Peter saves him with a web net 31.
- Physical impacts: Lizard Man knocks him out of the air and forcibly snuffs out his flames 212.
- Exhaustion: Lasts roughly ten minutes against Doom’s massed Baluurian forces before being overwhelmed 221.
Equipment & Personal Items
