Background / History
School Life and Secret Identities
Felicia enters Peter Parker’s class as a transfer student while already operating as Black Cat. During an early rooftop encounter, she defends her thefts by identifying her targets as criminals, including a Mafia money-laundering front and a fraudulent Wall Street broker. She explicitly rejects the idea that she gives her stolen wealth to the poor 14 15.
At school, she takes an interest in Peter’s intelligence and unusually guarded behavior. Poor physics grades give her a reason to seek tutoring from him, with Mary Jane joining their study sessions. Their flirtation develops into a relationship, which becomes official after Peter asks her to be with him 16 26.
Initially, Felicia does not realize that her boyfriend and Spider-Man are the same person. She even praises Peter to Spider-Man while criticizing the masked hero for arriving too late to help her. She eventually reveals her Black Cat identity to Peter, who responds by revealing his own identity; learning that he had already recognized her leaves her hurt until he explains that he wanted her voluntary trust 20 21 27 29.
Becoming Peter’s Partner
Felicia meets Aunt May and Uncle Ben and joins Peter in investigating a corrupt councilman’s dealings with the Hand. During the operation, she records evidence while Peter confronts the guards. Peter also reveals his S.H.I.E.L.D. trainee status, alarming her because of the risks his connections could pose to her secret identity 34.
Her relationship with her mother is strained. Felicia says the bankers and jewelers she robs are her mother’s clients, whom she accuses her mother of protecting at other people’s expense. When Mrs. Hardy attempts to dismiss Peter from a business dinner, Felicia openly defends him; her mother’s attitude changes after Norman Osborn praises his intelligence and inventions 34 35.
Felicia helps support Jean Grey after her powers emerge and offers to teach her basic fighting techniques. Although initially jealous of Peter’s attention to Jean, she later enters a relationship with both of them after Jean confesses feelings for the pair 45 46 53.
During the Chitauri invasion, Felicia fights alongside Peter despite his instructions to stay away, then leads civilians underground. Although she insists she only meant to save a friend, Peter calls her a hero for saving people regardless of who they were. She subsequently begins performing smaller acts of public service, including stopping a suicide and helping a lost elderly woman 60 61 81.
Walter Hardy and the Hydra Mission
Felicia helps Peter examine stolen research files, noticing a corrupted folder that completes an encrypted file and exposes a Hydra connection. She refuses to let him face the resulting danger alone and accompanies him as the crisis escalates 71 72 73.
While preparing to infiltrate the Treadstone black site, Felicia discovers that Fury’s specialist thief is her father, Walter Hardy, whom she believed dead. Their emotional reunion turns confrontational when she demands to know why he disappeared. Walter explains that he accepted imprisonment in exchange for his family’s freedom. When he tries to exclude her from the rescue operation, she refuses to leave 75 76.
Later, Felicia clashes with Peter over a plan to free Walter, interpreting Peter’s warnings about Hydra as a refusal to support her. After Doom nearly kills Peter, she keeps vigil through his surgery and unconsciousness. Fury presents evidence suggesting Hydra arranged the attack and offers her a mission intended to prevent the organization from hurting Peter again 87 88.
Felicia accepts, even though the assignment requires separation from Peter. Her apparent prison break and flight with Walter are cover for the operation. When Peter offers to abandon his life and accompany her, she incapacitates him with an electric shock and leaves him behind, insisting that New York needs Spider-Man. She departs for Europe with Walter and her mother, Valeria, while Fury grants Walter conditional immunity in exchange for evidence against Hydra 91 100.
Reunion and Magic Training
After roughly a year apart, Peter locates Felicia in Symkaria and approaches her under the identity of Anthony Whiteman. She still wears his custom bracelets and tells the disguised Peter that she continues to care deeply for Peter Parker 225 229.
Felicia and Silver are captured following an attempt to steal Hydra’s undercover-agent list. Peter rescues them and reveals himself, prompting an emotional reunion. Their reconciliation remains difficult: Peter confronts her over her disappearance, and she later apologizes for leaving when he needed her. Jean also angrily confronts her upon their return to Xavier’s school 229 234.
Felicia subsequently studies magic. Peter reflects that her efforts to keep up with him have taken her through New York’s gangs, the Red Room, and demanding training abroad. With his support, she succeeds in opening a Sling Ring portal. She later settles into the London Sanctum with Peter, Jean, and Wanda, and her romantic relationship with Peter and Jean is reaffirmed 251 257 259.
Appearance
- Hair: Long, silvery-blonde hair, also described as silver-white 14 29.
- Civilian clothing: Introduced wearing a black leather jacket over a white shirt and tight jeans 14.
- Original Black Cat outfit: A black bodysuit and mask, with a pouch for stolen items and tools 15.
- Upgraded costume: A fitted black tactical suit with concealed armor and white fur around the neckline and wrists, accompanied by cat-eye goggles 42.
- Disguised hair: A technological hair accessory makes her silver hair appear black while operating as Black Cat 42 62.
Personality
Felicia is teasing, self-assured, and highly observant. She quickly recognizes that Peter’s intelligence and comfort with isolation do not fit an ordinary high-school student. Her confidence also shapes her moral outlook: she distinguishes between stealing from predatory people and harming innocents, but does not pretend her thefts are charitable 15 16.
Her independence makes her resistant to being sidelined, even by people trying to protect her. She insists on sharing Peter’s dangers and rejects Walter’s attempt to exclude her from the Treadstone operation. That same loyalty can become self-sacrificing secrecy: she leaves Peter to protect him from Hydra despite knowing he will feel betrayed 73 76 91.
Behind her bravado, Felicia is sensitive to rejection and to being treated as unimportant. She becomes jealous of Peter’s closeness with Jean, worries about meeting his family, and angrily challenges what she perceives as unequal support when Walter needs rescuing 34 45 87.
