Background / History
Previous Life and Childhood
Morris comes from a twenty-first-century Eastern nation and has lived eleven years in his new world when the story begins in 1991. He had no parents or relatives in his previous life either. Although he recognizes the name Harry Potter, he has neither read the books nor watched the films and possesses almost no useful knowledge of future events 1 2 80.
He grows up in a government children’s home on the outskirts of London. Two families adopt him, but both return him after dead stray animals repeatedly appear in their gardens. Morris later suspects that these incidents were manifestations of his magic and feels sorry for the families affected 1 5.
According to a story he heard from a carer, his name came from a lottery in which nameless children drew slips from a hat. He has little personal attachment to it. Later, Arthur Weasley recalls a prophecy about meeting a helpful young man from a criminal’s family, prompting speculation about Morris’s biological connection to the Black family without establishing it as fact 17 176.
Discovery of Magic
The Book of the Mage appears in Morris’s mind shortly before he begins preparing for Hogwarts. Its contents gradually become accessible, initially emphasizing undead magic and curses. After successfully reanimating a dead cat, Morris accepts the book’s powers without the unease he thinks a more conventional person might feel 2 3.
Professor McGonagall helps him purchase school supplies using Hogwarts’s assistance fund. Harold Green, the children’s home manager, subsequently accompanies him to buy an owl. Morris chooses a cursed great grey owl for ten Galleons and transforms it after its death, adding his own blood to the ritual 6 10 11 12.
First Year at Hogwarts
Sorted into Ravenclaw, Morris quickly builds a routine around classes, library research, and meditation. His rapid spell acquisition impresses Hermione, while his consistently excellent practical work attracts Snape’s attention. He also befriends Fred and George, joining their nighttime investigations and discovering the living Three-Headed Dog behind a locked door 23 44 46 49 62.
His necromancy develops alongside his conventional studies. He explores the Gap World, produces energy crystals, and successfully advances his Skeleton Dog. Financial pressure leads him to Knockturn Alley, where he establishes a working relationship with Ezra Frick and negotiates a 250-Galleon skeleton-dog commission for Madam Caroline 57 63 65 69 74.
Morris helps Harry during the Philosopher’s Stone incident while concealing much of his involvement. Harry later identifies him as the mysterious armored “knight” who intervened against Quirrell. Morris confirms his role, asks Harry to keep it private, and explains that he has already received a reward 103 111. Their encounter also leaves Voldemort with a memorable grievance: Morris kicked the back of Quirrell’s head, striking Voldemort’s face 352.
Chamber of Secrets
During his second year, Morris flies a Bone Dragon over the Christmas holidays, offers to develop an antidote for Hermione’s cat transformation, and joins an upper-year Ravenclaw knowledge-exchange group. A photograph of him riding the dragon appears in the Daily Prophet 135 140 145.
Using the name Mark, he communicates with Tom Riddle’s diary while growing suspicious of its interest in his blood. He later coerces Draco Malfoy into accompanying him into the Chamber of Secrets, refuses Tom’s offer of cooperation, and fights the Basilisk 141 147 151 153.
Dumbledore credits Morris with helping resolve the Heir incident and gives him the Basilisk’s corpse, retaining one fang as evidence to help free Hagrid. Morris spends the Easter holidays repairing the body and learns that opening the Chamber through Parseltongue requires magic rather than ordinary hissing 158.
The Ship and the Gap World
Morris builds the magically expanded Ship in a Bottle, using his Bone Dragon to tow it through the air. During a visit to the Burrow, he tells Fred that the ship will serve as the Explorers’ base. It also becomes his residence and research workshop 174 180.
His investigation of the Gap World leads him to Grindelwald, whom he visits in Nurmengard to ask about earlier research. Dumbledore regards the intrusion as a serious matter, but Morris defends his decision as following his own curiosity 205 207.
In the Gap World, Morris encounters Scrape, a wizard who claims to be a god of death guarding the route to the world of the dead. Scrape attacks after detecting Morris’s Mental Power. Morris is badly outmatched and receives a death-energy affliction that is later removed using phoenix tears. The encounter motivates his plan to build larger linked undead reserves and develop stronger spells 246 247 248 250 261.
Triwizard Tournament
Morris is selected to represent Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament. He wins the first task by combining curses with repeated Stunning Spells, supported by skeletons supplying additional magic, and extracts dragon blood afterward. Before the second task, he is widely regarded as the strongest contender 272 280 283 303.
During this period, he exposes the wizard posing as Moody. He resists the Imperius Curse while pretending to be controlled, counters an attempted memory modification, and pursues the impostor into the Clock Tower Courtyard, where their duel includes a Killing Curse and Morris’s bone constructs 287.
He continues researching souls and modified Enslavement Marks while the tournament proceeds. By its aftermath, students have watched him confront Voldemort through a crystal ball; Morris confirms that he dodged the Killing Curse and reassures them that Hogwarts remains safe 317 325.
Ministry Work and Horcrux Research
Morris becomes an intern in the Department of Mysteries while still attending Hogwarts. Fudge welcomes him and expresses interest in his joining permanently after graduation. He also receives an Order of the Phoenix assignment to investigate a suspected Death Eater base 342 349.
His soul research distinguishes Tom’s memory-bearing diary fragment from another Voldemort fragment housed in a skeleton worker, which cannot think or speak independently. He also investigates the Resurrection Stone and considers whether its fuller power might depend on the other Deathly Hallows 357.
After a crystal-ball display forms the Deathly Hallows symbol and then Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Morris tells Dumbledore that Draco has taken the diadem out of Hogwarts. Dumbledore suspects that Voldemort made it into a Horcrux; Morris omits details that might implicate himself 377.
Appearance
- Silver-gray eyes 17.
- Handsome appearance, noted alongside his academic ability as a reason for his popularity with girls 283.
- Youthful face and body despite adultlike composure; Frick initially assumes he is an adult disguised with Polyjuice Potion 11 68.
- Frequently wears gray robes, and can alter their color and detailing through magic 258 297.
- Intricate dark-red blood marking on the back of his hand, used for Fixed-Point Teleportation 164 180.
Personality
Morris is driven primarily by curiosity and an intense dislike of boredom. He welcomes the lack of foreknowledge about the magical world because exploring an unknown future interests him more than following a spoiled sequence of events. The Mirror of Erised ultimately shows him an endless sea of stars, reflecting an ambition that extends beyond money or a comfortable life 1 2 79.
He studies persistently, experiments methodically, and readily revises techniques that do not suit him. Potions particularly appeal to his appreciation of logic and control. Although confident enough to call himself a genius, he treats Hermione’s achievements as a reason to work harder and recognizes limits in his own combat experience 39 62 77 117.
His curiosity can override caution: during the Skeleton Dog’s advancement, he moves toward a dangerous ritual disturbance because he wants to witness the process. He also breaks into Nurmengard to question Grindelwald and freely admits it when he becomes curious about Dumbledore’s reaction 63 205 207.
Morris can be protective and generous without being conventionally gentle. He rescues Harry from a would-be child trafficker and shares original spells to improve his friends’ ability to defend themselves. Conversely, he enjoys frightening people he dislikes, openly identifying Draco’s fear as an effective means of controlling him 111 151 367.
He values autonomy over prestige, business demands, or romance. Once financially secure, he refuses broom commissions simply because he no longer feels like making them. He admits that his speech can make others uncomfortable and buys a social-advice book to improve it. Though fond of Phoebe, he regards reaching the pinnacle of magic as more important than pursuing a relationship 272 297 348.
Abilities & Skills
Necromancy and Undead Advancement
Morris transforms corpses and skeletons into undead servants through magic circles supplied by the Book of the Mage 3 11 72.
- Transformation: Reanimates animals and prepares skeleton creatures for sale 11 69 72.
- Advancement: Converts large quantities of energy into a catalyst that strengthens undead and can grant new abilities 63.
- Command: His orders can override an undead creature’s instinctive reluctance 12 63.
- Containment: Stores undead within the Undead Creature Containment Magic Circle and releases them when required 275 280.
- Limits: Transformation consumes his own reserves; higher advancement is constrained by energy supply and the catalyst’s upper limit 72 261 307.
Magic Power Link
Morris draws on the magic of linked undead creatures, turning his growing collection into an auxiliary reserve 215 275.
- Uses summoned skeletons as “mana power banks” during the dragon task 280.
- Gains endurance rather than an automatic increase in every spell’s destructive power 276.
- Still faces Mental Power strain and the physical consequences of heavy spellcasting 247.
Bone Summoning Spell
The spell creates physical bone objects for offense, defense, restraint, and utility 44.
- Weapons: Bone spikes and spears; can produce dense barrages and target an opponent’s vulnerable points 44 153 263.
- Protection: Floating shields, armor, and a quickly formed face mask 44 73 287.
- Restraint: Bone prisons and cages 60 287.
- Limits: Strong attacks can crack shields, while the impostor Moody destroys bone spikes with the Bone-Breaking Curse 247 287.
Curses
| Curse | Demonstrated effect |
|---|---|
| Weakening Curse | One of his earliest Book of the Mage spells; eventually becomes fast enough to construct instinctively 3 56. |
| Wailing Curse | Produces piercing mental howls; Morris’s self-test lasts about ten seconds 16. |
| Pain Curse | Causes intense, burning-nerve-like pain and incapacitates the hag threatening Harry 111. |
- Powerful creatures can resist or adapt to his curses: the Basilisk rapidly reduces their effectiveness 153.
- Casting several curses at full strength in quick succession gives him a headache 153.
Shadow Magic
- Shadow Concealment: Allows him to enter shadows and hide from ordinary observation; early use feels like being compressed into a cramped box 33.
- Stealth: He remains concealed while observing Dumbledore near the Mirror of Erised, although this does not establish that the spell is universally undetectable 92.
- Shadow Veil: His original black mist obscures vision and weakens hearing, touch, smell, and other perception. Morris retains—and even improves—his own vision inside it 279.
- Limit: The first version of Shadow Veil consumes magic at an exceptionally high rate 279.
Patronus Charm
Morris’s corporeal Patronus takes the form of a silver raven. Rather than relying on a happy memory, he draws happiness from the possibilities of the unknown future 119.
- Can produce dozens of raven Patronuses simultaneously, a feat Snape says he has never seen before 119.
- Uses them to capture one Dementor, repel another, and suppress the disturbance inside the suitcase holding his captive 182.
- Offers to teach the charm to Fred and George 182.
Gate of Two Realms and Energy Gathering
Morris uses the Gate of Two Realms to enter the Gap World and Energy Gathering to condense its mist into crystals 57 213.
- Extends the Gate’s duration through repeated redesign 213.
- Develops a small portal that supplies mist without requiring him to enter Scrape’s territory 266.
- Condenses expelled death energy into black crystals after his treatment and during his confrontation with Barty Crouch Jr. 250 321.
- Does not treat raw death energy as equivalent to hostile spells cast with it; the latter remain dangerous 321.
Teleportation
- Fixed-Point Teleportation: Uses a blood-drawn hand marking to establish a destination circle and return to it almost instantly 164.
- Uses the technique to return directly to his bedroom aboard the Ship in a Bottle 180.
- Later demonstrates ordinary Apparition near King’s Cross 359.
Potions
Morris consistently completes classroom exercises perfectly, earns Ravenclaw points, and is sometimes recruited by Snape to brew potions or process ingredients 46 282.
- Keeps fifty or sixty bottles of Draught of Living Death in stock and offers to sell some to Algernon 145.
- Advises Cho on Pepperup Potion and provides Harry with a headache potion 103.
- Offers to research an antidote for Hermione’s Polyjuice transformation using blood and hair samples 135.
- Remains challenged by advanced material, including unfamiliar poisons in a later Potions course 261.
Spellcraft and Enchantment
Morris understands Book of the Mage spells as precise structures constructed with Mental Power. Later access to their underlying principles allows him to invent his own magic 3 275.
- Whip Wand: Inscribes a Bone Summoning spell model onto an object using runes 143.
- Communication: Helps Fred and George add video chat to his Mental Power Connection Crystal Ball 278.
- Compendium: Shares wandless, low-consumption spells including Frostbolt, Magic Missile, and Chain Lightning 366 367.
- Practical limit: Most spells in the compendium have modest destructive power; their advantages are discreet casting, efficiency, and accessibility 367.
