Personality
Dumbledore usually addresses students with gentle humor rather than open intimidation. When Morris notices phoenix flames on his shoulders, he reassures him and demonstrates that his robes are unharmed. He also treats curiosity and experimentation as valuable qualities in young wizards, showing considerable tolerance toward Morris's unusual magical work 64 138.
His patience does not prevent him from taking intrusive precautions. While investigating the security of the Philosopher's Stone, he attempts a restrained use of Legilimency on Morris, then checks his soul for signs of Dark Magic through Magic Manifestation. After Morris detects the mental intrusion, Dumbledore apologizes and promises not to use probing magic on him again 94.
He considers helping students a professor's responsibility rather than a transaction. When Morris asks how to repay him for preserved phoenix tears, Dumbledore asks only that he protect Hogwarts if it faces danger. He also insists that Harry cannot be punished without evidence during the Chamber of Secrets investigation 127 250.
Grindelwald is a subject on which his composure becomes more guarded. He avoids discussing their past, repeatedly checks whether Morris has contacted him, and considers Grindelwald's influence dangerous enough that even a supervised meeting would be an unacceptable risk 64 65 198.
History
Early Career and Grindelwald
A historical account credits Dumbledore with research achievements in several fields and celebrates his defeat of Gellert Grindelwald in a legendary duel in 1945. The book presents that victory as the turning point that spared the European wizarding world from Grindelwald's rule; Grindelwald was subsequently imprisoned in Nurmengard 33 65.
Dumbledore later admits that he once sought the Deathly Hallows. He possesses the wand known as the Elder Wand, although he distinguishes its real ability to enhance magic from the legend that it makes its wielder invincible 337.
Morris's First Year and the Philosopher's Stone
Dumbledore first encounters Morris directly after sensing magical activity near Hagrid's hut. Fawkes transports him to investigate, but he interprets the aftermath of Morris's undead advancement ritual as a young student's private spell practice. During the encounter, he recognizes Grindelwald in a photograph Morris carries, then declines to explain their history 64 65.
After Morris bypasses the obstacles protecting the Philosopher's Stone, Dumbledore questions him about Shadow Concealment and his work in Knockturn Alley. His investigation includes an unsuccessful gentle mental probe and a lesson in Magic Manifestation, which reassures him that Morris has not been using Dark Magic 93 94.
At the end of the Stone incident, Dumbledore emerges from concealment and takes the Stone from Morris. He explains that he and its creator have agreed it should be destroyed because of the danger it attracts. He subsequently sends Morris to take the injured Harry to Madam Pomfrey, but privately remains troubled by how little he can understand Morris 105 106.
Chamber of Secrets
Dumbledore attempts several counterspells on the petrified Mrs. Norris without success. During the ensuing questioning, he supports McGonagall's objection to punishing Harry without evidence and assures Morris that the attacker will be caught 127.
Morris later identifies the attacker as a basilisk, but Dumbledore acknowledges that the Chamber's location remains unknown. By this point, he has learned from Fawkes how to detect Morris within shadows 129.
All twelve school governors sign Dumbledore's dismissal. Hermione reports that Lucius Malfoy secured their agreement through persuasion or threats, and McGonagall becomes acting headmistress. Although ordinary school routines continue, Dumbledore's absence leaves the students feeling less secure 147 148.
After the crisis, Dumbledore enters the Chamber by speaking its Parseltongue password and examines the charred diary. He is again treated as headmaster and tells Cornelius Fudge that Morris was the key figure in resolving the Heir incident 158.
Dementors, Grindelwald, and Peter Pettigrew
Dumbledore warns students about the Dementors stationed around Hogwarts and specifically cautions against taking excessive interest in them. After Sirius Black damages the Fat Lady's portrait, he orders a castle search and supplies hundreds of sleeping bags so the students can remain together in the Great Hall 183 195.
When Harry falls during a Dementor-disrupted Quidditch match, Dumbledore catches him with magic. Rather than casting his own Patronus, he asks Morris to drive the Dementors away, expressing confidence in the third-year's ability 197.
Morris's renewed interest in Grindelwald leads Dumbledore to warn him about the imprisoned wizard's ability to sway people's hearts. Morris nevertheless visits Nurmengard without permission, leaving Dumbledore uncertain how to respond 198 205 207.
Dumbledore later restrains Scabbers and forces him to reveal his identity as Peter Pettigrew. He awards Morris 150 house points for capturing Sirius and Peter, moving Ravenclaw from third place to first 232 233 239.
Death Curse and Triwizard Tournament
When Morris seeks help with a death curse on his face, Dumbledore summons Fawkes to test the healing effect of phoenix tears. Once the treatment proves effective, he supplies tears he preserved in his youth, sparing Fawkes the strain of producing enough fresh tears. Morris uses them to remove the curse 250.
During the Triwizard Tournament, Dumbledore explains the Goblet of Fire and the Age Line, then announces Morris as Hogwarts's champion. When Harry is unexpectedly selected as a fourth competitor, the officials debate the binding tournament contract 268 272 273.
Dumbledore also advises Morris on improving his spellwork. He praises Morris's Shield Charm as better than those of most Aurors, but explains that further growth requires experience and emotional development rather than simply greater magical reserves 275 276.
After Barty Crouch Jr.'s exposure, Dumbledore identifies the possibility that the plot involves using Harry to resurrect Voldemort. Before the final task, he gives Morris an enchanted phoenix feather that can summon his assistance 291 317.
Dumbledore arrives in the graveyard and blocks Voldemort's Killing Curse with an earthen wall, but Voldemort and Peter escape. Back at Hogwarts, he challenges Fudge's attempt to evade the evidence of Voldemort's return, reassures the crowd that Voldemort remains weakened, and agrees to suspend the tournament 323 324.
Renewed War and the Horcrux Search
Dumbledore organizes the Order of the Phoenix's search for Voldemort, reasoning that his incomplete body prevents him from using his full power. He formally invites Morris to join, while making clear that refusal is permitted. Morris contributes Shadow Concealment Stones, one of which Dumbledore immediately tests 328.
He arranges Ministry assistance for Hogwarts's defensive instruction, including Aurors, and removes Sirius from the cursed Defence Against the Dark Arts position in favor of another task. Umbridge subsequently arrives as the new professor and announces direct Ministry oversight of the subject 336 360.
Dumbledore takes Morris to the ruined Gaunt home to investigate a possible Horcrux. His reasoning combines Voldemort's attachment to his ancestry with a clue from one of Trelawney's prophecies. After the ring is found, he declines to destroy it himself and supplies Morris with a basilisk fang, explaining that its venom can destroy Horcruxes 355 356.
