Background / History
The Tang Sect was an ancient organization with a legacy described as lasting ten thousand years. It maintained extensive commercial interests throughout the continent and functioned publicly through Xuanshi Tang Sect Technology Co., Ltd. 14 16 76
It was Shrek Academy's most dependable ally and a major source of its financial support. The Tang Sect made large annual payments to Shrek under the name of “sponsorship,” helping sustain the academy alongside Federation support. 39 53
The sect presented its overseas activities as mutual aid between the peoples of the Douluo Continent. Sect Master Zang Xin argued that the Star Luo Empire, the Heaven Spirit Empire, and the Federation were effectively “one family,” and that Tang Sect assistance was intended to preserve continental peace rather than commit treason. 16
Chen Yu selected the Tang Sect as a target after identifying it as Shrek Academy's capable assistant. He ordered the retrieval of five years of transaction records from Xuanshi Tang Sect Technology Co., Ltd. 14 15
Operations and Assets
- The sect acquired large quantities of military-grade Soul Tools and Soul Tool blueprints through its company. 15 16
- It operated a concealed research and dockyard base in Tianhai City, containing warehouses, maintenance areas, ships, and submarines intended for long-distance travel. 15 34
- The Tianhai base held offensive and defensive Soul Tools, personal Soul Tool weapons, warship cannons, blueprints, and equipment not yet fielded by the Federation military. 34
- According to Federation evidence, the base was used to transport military resources to the Star Luo Empire and Heaven Spirit Empire, also called the Dou Ling Empire in some records. 15 16 34
- The Tang Sect maintained branches across dozens of Federation cities, including Ming Capital, Star Luo City, Dou Ling City, and Beihai City. 36 37
- It maintained overseas branches, including a major branch in the Star Luo Empire. 190
- Its accumulated holdings included rare metals, heavenly treasures, Soul Tools, blueprints, and other valuable materials; its reserves were characterized as wealth rivaling a nation. 37 76
- The Tang Sect possessed a substantial research and commercial system and attempted to recruit talented researchers by offering generous funding, resources, and research freedom. 64 65
- Chen Yu acquired the opening chapter of the Tang Sect's Mysterious Heaven Skill while researching cultivation paths beyond the Soul Master system. 31
Federation Investigation and Crackdown
Chen Yu publicly presented transaction records, receipts, fund flows, and material manifests showing that Soul Tools and blueprints were routed to Tianhai City before disappearing from Tang Sect accounts. He argued that the sect was secretly supplying overseas regimes and proposed an investigation, asset freeze, and arrests. More than two-thirds of the 365 Federation councilors voted in favor. 15 16
The Federation's highest intelligence department verified the evidence. The approved measures included a full investigation of the Tang Sect, the freezing of all its assets within the Federation, and the arrest of personnel involved in the transactions. 16
Sect Master Zang Xin rejected the accusation. He claimed that Star Luo, Heaven Spirit, and the Federation were “one family,” framing the Tang Sect's transfers as mutual aid intended to preserve continental peace rather than treason. 16
Public advocates and network “experts” later campaigned for the Tang Sect's innocence, arguing that its transfers promoted cooperation among the continent's states. Their campaign generated online petitions and protests outside the Parliament Building. 18 19
Fall of Shrek City Headquarters
During the Federation assault on Shrek City, Zang Xin attempted to stop the search of Tang Sect headquarters. Chen Yu defeated him with a single punch, leaving him severely injured and unconscious before Federation soldiers took him into custody. 32
The Four Great Legions then cleared the headquarters in Shrek City's northwest district. Within three hours, they captured:
- Thousands of disciples
- Dozens of deacons
- More than a dozen elders
- One Supreme Elder
- Sect Master Zang Xin 33
The headquarters was sealed by the military. Its Supreme Elder, despite being a Limit Douluo, surrendered rather than confront Level 9 Fixed Soul Guidance Shells. 33
Seizure of the Tianhai Base
The Three Great Navies landed at Tianhai City and seized the Tang Sect's secret base. More than 200 remaining disciples, researchers, technicians, and transport staff were detained and fitted with limiters. 34
All discovered Soul Tools, blueprints, and supplies were registered and moved to the Federation national treasury. 34
Elimination of Federation Branches
After the headquarters and Tianhai base fell, Federation legions simultaneously cleared Tang Sect branches across the country. The operation proceeded without warning and encountered little organized resistance. 35 36 37
The soldiers' actions were also driven by loyalty to Chen Yu after they received Federation credits and other rewards. They regarded the Speaker's enemies as their own and voluntarily targeted Tang Sect branches in their respective regions. 36
By dawn, every Tang Sect branch within the Federation had been cleared, its personnel arrested, and its resources seized. 37
Chen Yu subsequently allocated half of the resources confiscated from Tang Sect headquarters and branches to the Eight Great Legions. 37
Later Fate
The Tang Sect was described as sealed, with Zang Xin captured and its organization uprooted. 49
Penal Deployment to the Blood God Legion
Captured Tang Sect members were transferred to the Blood God Legion to defend the Abyss Passage. Chen Yu intended their deployment to reduce Federation casualties while offering surviving members the possibility of offsetting their crimes through service. 86 89
The assignment treated the Tang Sect members as expendable vanguard troops. Chen Yu believed that their combat strength could weaken the Abyss while simultaneously reducing the Tang Sect's remaining power. Cao Dezhi's long service guarding the Blood God Legion was a major reason Chen Yu allowed the prisoners to live rather than execute them immediately. 86 221
Zang Xin received special consideration because of his relationship with Cao Dezhi. If the Tang Sect members remained obedient and served the Federation for the rest of their lives, Chen Yu was willing to allow surviving disciples to have their crimes offset by merit after the Abyss conflict ended. 86 221
The punishment was devastating. The Tang Sect members were used as the vanguard in the Abyss campaign, and fewer than one in a thousand remained alive by the time the Abyss Plane was destroyed. From that point onward, there was no longer a Tang Sect on the Douluo Plane. 230
Overseas Branch and Star Luo Conflict
The Tang Sect's former overseas activities continued to influence Federation policy even after its continental branches had been destroyed. Chen Yu later presented records showing that the sect had transported Federation rare metals, heavenly treasures, and high-grade Soul Tools to Star Luo and Dou Ling over a period of several thousand years. The Federation used these records to demand compensation and prepare for war against the overseas regimes. 149 150
The Star Luo Emperor Dai Tianling learned that the Tang Sect had been sealed for treason because of its smuggling of Federation supplies. The revelation implied that Star Luo had benefited from the same transfers and contributed to the outbreak of war between Star Luo and the Federation. 169
The Tang Sect branch in the Star Luo Empire survived temporarily under the leadership of Hu Jie. When the Star Luo City Spirit Pagoda threatened to destroy the branch and absorb its disciples, Hu Jie refused to abandon the sect. He fought Zhang Geyang and maintained that Tang Sect disciples had prepared themselves to sacrifice everything for the organization. 190
Connection to the Demon Plane Incident
Despite its dismantling, the Tang Sect was later identified alongside Shrek Academy as responsible for breaking the Demon Plane's seal, enabling a demon invasion. The revelation contributed to the Federation's final reckoning with Shrek and its allied factions. 134 139
Legacy in the Altered Timeline
Two years after the Abyss conflict, the destruction of Shrek Academy and the Tang Sect was treated as one of the defining changes separating the altered timeline from the original history. No Tang Sect remained as a political, commercial, or martial power, while the Federation and Spirit Pagoda continued developing Soul Tool and artificial Soul Spirit technology without it. 233
