Background / History
Meeting Son Wukong
Bulma follows Son Wukong home to the mountains and meets Zhang Wutian. When Wukong introduces the adult Zhang as her “husband,” Bulma draws a submachine gun and accuses him of exploiting the young girl. She lowers the weapon after recognizing Wukong’s confused understanding of the relationship 5.
Discovering the Four-Star Ball, Bulma persuades Wukong to accompany her on a Dragon Ball hunt. She conceals the fact that the balls scatter after a wish, prompting Zhang to secure a promise that she will bring Wukong to the World Martial Arts Tournament one year later. During their travels, Bulma introduces Wukong to everyday life outside the mountains and reads her a newspaper report about Zhang’s journey on a Tyrannosaurus Rex 5 6.
Tournament and Life in West City
At the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, Bulma remains openly suspicious of Zhang. She fears for Wukong during the fighters’ energy clash and loudly criticizes Zhang for dodging rather than fighting her head-on. Her shouting interrupts his concentration and reminds him to end the match before moonrise can trigger Wukong’s transformation 13 15 16.
After the tournament, Bulma brings the group to her West City home and builds portable communicators at Zhang’s request. She distributes the devices and teaches even the mechanically inexperienced Wukong how to use them. Yamcha openly identifies Bulma as his girlfriend during the visit 20.
When Zhang becomes wealthy through his martial arts school, he builds a nearby home and becomes Bulma’s neighbor. She questions whether he should be relaxing at her house instead of managing the dojo and suggests employing Yamcha to keep him busy and discourage his flirting 21.
Fortuneteller Baba’s Challenge
Bulma joins the group visiting Fortuneteller Baba because Yamcha is participating. She cheers his victories, objects when Zhang sends Wukong against a masked elderly fighter, and later teases Zhang after the fighter is revealed as Wukong’s grandfather, Son Gohan 40 41 42 43.
Appearance
- Purple hair, noted when she first follows Wukong home 5.
- Beautiful young woman, explicitly described as attractive by Zhang 20.
Personality
Bulma is outspoken, proud, and quick to confront people she distrusts. Her first encounter with Zhang escalates to an armed standoff, and she continues insulting him at the tournament even after their initial misunderstanding is resolved 5 13.
Her protectiveness toward Wukong resembles that of an older sister guarding a naive younger sibling. She challenges Zhang over his treatment of Wukong and questions her privately about their intimacy. However, her adult explanations and suggestive language often confuse Wukong rather than clarify matters 39 40 42.
She is also resourceful and persuasive: she convinces Wukong to leave the mountains, readily turns Zhang’s communication proposal into working devices, and gives the finished phones to her friends. Her relationship with Yamcha combines affection with jealousy over his tendency to flirt 5 20 21.
Abilities & Skills
Engineering and Invention
Bulma treats portable communication technology as a straightforward construction task, requiring only suitable materials. She completes the group’s handheld devices quickly at her home 20.
- Tomato Phones: Provide voice calls and location tracking 20 23.
- Privacy controls: Users can disable the transmission of their coordinates 20.
- Worldwide coverage: Bulma claims the phones have no blind spots anywhere on Earth 23.
- Customization: Adds a bitten-tomato logo at Zhang’s request 20.
- Demonstrated limitation: Zhang cannot contact the original group after entering another world; Earth-wide coverage does not establish cross-world connectivity 23.
Persuasion and Instruction
- Convinces Wukong to lend her the Four-Star Ball and begin traveling, although she withholds information about the balls scattering after a wish 5.
- Helps Wukong understand ordinary society and reads newspaper text to her 6.
- Teaches Wukong to operate a Tomato Phone despite her unfamiliarity with machinery 20.
Combat Limitations
- Carries and threatens Zhang with a submachine gun; Wukong later recalls that Bulma once fired at her and that the bullets hurt 5 39.
- Is explicitly described as having a combat power of five 43.
- Cannot accurately judge the scale of Zhang and Wukong’s strength during Baba’s challenge, unlike the trained martial artists present 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Submachine gun — Drawn during her first confrontation with Zhang 5.
- Four-Star Dragon Ball — Borrowed from Wukong for the Dragon Ball hunt 5.

Relationships
- Son Wukong — Traveling companion and close friend. Bulma teaches her about the outside world and fiercely guards her against perceived exploitation 5 6 40.
- Zhang Wutian — Initially an object of suspicion; later her friend and West City neighbor. Their exchanges remain argumentative, particularly concerning Wukong 13 21 40 43.
- Yamcha — Boyfriend. Bulma cheers his fighting successes but resents his flirting and wants him kept occupied with dojo work 20 21 41.
- Dr. Brief — Father. His alternate-world counterpart becomes consumed by revenge after that world’s Bulma is killed 23 35.

| World hosting the early 22nd tournament | Vegeta, living under the name Son Goku, knows a Bulma and dismisses her as weak when comparing her with Son Wukong 48 49. |
