Background & History
Arrival in the Dragon Ball World
Zhang Wutian suddenly appears in a dense forest, where survival is his immediate concern. He follows smoke to Son Wukong's home and recognizes her from the Dragon Ball manga he loved throughout his childhood. Although he believes he could exploit her innocence, he refuses to deceive her and honestly asks for help instead 1.
Son Wukong's “light punch” sends him flying and leaves him unconscious. After recovering, Zhang notices that he has become stronger and begins to believe that his transmigrated body has unusual potential 1 2. Over the following six months, he repeatedly spars with Son Wukong, hunts in the wilderness, and gradually adapts to his new life 3 4.
Training with Son Wukong and Master Korin
Zhang discovers that his ability only activates when he survives combat against someone stronger than himself; being injured by weaker opponents, such as a wolf pack, grants no comparable growth. Son Wukong's own tendency to grow during difficult battles creates a cycle in which each fighter's progress pushes the other further 4.
He recognizes that his rapidly gained power rests on a poor technical foundation: his movements, breathing, habits, and combat instincts cannot properly support his physical strength. He therefore commits to basic training before leaving Son Wukong to travel with Bulma, promising to meet her at the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament one year later 4 5.
During their separation, Zhang defeats and tames a Tyrannosaurus Rex, later releasing it after making it promise not to attack or eat humans. He then trains for a year under Master Korin, who corrects the flaws in his copied martial-arts style and teaches him how to use ki 6 7 9 10.
Martial Arts Tournament and Martial Arts Hall
At the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, Zhang reunites with Son Wukong and quickly establishes himself as one of the strongest competitors. He defeats Nam with a near-instant punch, then gives Nam a Hoi-Poi Capsule to aid his drought-stricken village 12 14.
Zhang defeats Son Wukong in their tournament match by knocking her unconscious before the full moon can trigger her Great Ape transformation. The match reinforces their friendly rivalry and his protective, mentor-like role toward her 15 16.
After the tournament, Zhang declines to join Son Wukong's Dragon Ball journey. Instead, he secures a loan from the tournament organizers and establishes his own martial arts school, agreeing to appear in the next three tournaments as promotion. His public ki-enhanced tile-smashing demonstration creates a crater and draws thousands of prospective disciples, making him a prominent martial artist 20 21.
Strange Space and Parallel Worlds
While visiting Penguin Village, Zhang falls into a pitch-black, thought-responsive space. He uses ki as a light source, discovers that the environment changes according to his thoughts, and forms a connection that allows him to return to it later 22.
The space leads him into alternate Dragon Ball worlds. In one devastated world, he encounters a Red Ribbon Army acting as humanity's defense against King Piccolo and later trains Krillin and Tien Shinhan alongside Son Wukong under Mr. Popo. The group eventually enters the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to prepare for greater threats 23 25 27 28 29.
Zhang intervenes when Evil Son Goku threatens Son Wukong, initially enduring the enemy's attacks to assess his strength before defeating him with a Kamehameha-like finishing attack 33 34.
Dragon Ball Collection and Further Travel
After returning to his own world, Zhang challenges the Red Ribbon Army for its Dragon Balls. He and Son Wukong withstand a large-scale missile barrage, destroy the army's forces, and gather the seven Dragon Balls 37 38 39 44.
In the alternate world devastated by Evil Son Goku, Zhang uses Shenron to resurrect everyone killed by that world's Son Goku. He, Son Wukong, and Krillin then catch the scattering Dragon Balls together 45.
Later, Zhang and Son Wukong enter another parallel world, determine that it is two years ahead of their own timeline, and participate in its 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. There, Zhang defeats that world's Tien Shinhan while seeking stronger opponents—including a version of Son Goku who is actually Vegeta 48 49 50.
Appearance
Zhang Wutian is an adult human martial artist. Following his extensive training, he is notably toned and muscular 5 33.
- Often wears martial-arts clothing during tournaments and combat.
- His body is visibly hardened by repeated training and high-intensity battles 10 33.
- Can emit visible light from his fists when gathering ki 10 21.
Personality
Zhang is pragmatic, adaptable, and strongly motivated by survival and self-improvement. Though initially pessimistic after arriving in the forest, he quickly chooses to train, learn the world's rules, and build a place for himself within it 1 4 20.
He is deeply nostalgic, particularly toward the Dragon Ball characters he knew from his original world. This attachment makes him unwilling to manipulate Son Wukong despite understanding how easily he could exploit her trust 1 7.
In combat, Zhang is confident, competitive, and analytical. He actively seeks stronger opponents because they are essential to his growth, but he also recognizes the importance of technique, control, and a stable foundation 4 18 49. He can be blunt and sarcastic toward enemies, especially armed opponents and the Red Ribbon Army, yet he remains compassionate toward people harmed by circumstances beyond their control 14 24 45.
Zhang is particularly protective of Son Wukong. He ends their tournament match to prevent her transformation, intervenes against Evil Son Goku, and rescues her when Dr. Brief attacks 16 33 35.
Abilities & Skills
Adaptive Growth Ability
Zhang's transmigration grants him the ability to grow stronger after surviving combat against an opponent stronger than himself.
- Growth occurs regardless of whether he wins or loses the fight 4.
- Fighting weaker opponents does not trigger the same increase, even if he is badly injured 4.
- His ability forms a self-sustaining growth cycle with Son Wukong, whose power rises during close battles 4 28.
- His growth had not reached a known ceiling by the time he chose not to pursue a Saiyan bloodline wish 20.
- Rapid increases can leave his foundation unstable if not supported by technical training 4.
Martial Arts
Zhang develops from a self-taught imitator into an elite martial artist through training under Master Korin, Mr. Popo, and within the Hyperbolic Time Chamber 9 10 28 29.
- Uses high-speed movement, counters, afterimages, aerial combat, and close-quarters combinations 18 34.
- Defeats Nam, Mummy Man, and Tien Shinhan with overwhelming speed and precision 14 41 49.
- Can fight strategically, deliberately baiting an opponent's afterimage technique before launching his prepared finisher 19.
- Uses ki tracking to follow opponents even while blinded by Solar Flare 50.
Ki Manipulation
Master Korin teaches Zhang to gather, control, and apply ki 10.
- Creates visible light by maintaining ki in his fist, allowing him to navigate darkness 22.
- Fires energy shockwaves, including an imitation Kamehameha with lower efficiency than Son Wukong's original technique 15.
- Uses a circular ki blast designed to unleash 100% of his combat power 19.
- Releases air blasts, including one used to catch a scattering Dragon Ball 45.
- Can track the movement and presence of opponents through ki rather than sight 50.
Empty Fist
A ki-based martial-arts technique used in both single-target and barrage forms.
- Uses the technique to defeat Tien Shinhan in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament 49.
- Empty Fist Barrage fires numerous golden fist-shaped projectiles 38.
- The barrage destroys an incoming mass missile volley without harming Zhang or Son Wukong 38.
Flight
Zhang can fly and maneuver freely in the air.
- Flies with Son Wukong during the attack on Red Ribbon Army headquarters 38.
- Uses aerial mobility to continue attacking Evil Son Goku after launching him skyward 34.
Strange Space Connection
After being trapped in the anomalous space connected to Penguin Village, Zhang establishes a link to it.
- The space responds to his thoughts, including removing the ground beneath him when he questions its existence 22.
- He can return through the connection and use black-hole-like portals to travel between worlds 22 32 45 48.
- His communicator cannot function normally after he crosses into an alternate world 23.

Relationships

- Bulma — Initially distrustful of Zhang after misunderstanding Son Wukong's claim that he was her husband. They later become neighbors and friends after he establishes his martial arts hall 5 20 21.
- Master Korin — Zhang's first formal martial-arts teacher. Korin corrects his weak fundamentals and teaches him practical ki control 9 10.
- Mr. Popo — Mentor at the Lookout who trains Zhang's group before granting them access to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber 28.
- Krillin — Fellow martial artist and later ally across parallel worlds. Zhang advises him in tournaments and uses the Dragon Balls to restore the people killed in Krillin's world 14 25 45.

Trivia

- Despite his immense strength, he remains afraid of firearms 24.
- He has no immediate desire for immortality, a Saiyan bloodline, or a return-home wish; he considers refining his martial arts more valuable 20.
