Background / History

After the defeat of Majin Buu, Goku continues training but struggles to advance Super Saiyan 3 without an opponent strong enough to pressure him. While sparring with Vegeta, he senses Soya's unfamiliar Saiyan ki and immediately seeks him out, excited rather than intimidated by the prospect of another powerful Saiyan. 2 3 12

Goku challenges Soya after Vegeta is defeated. He reveals Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3 in succession, then pushes beyond his previous limit to force Soya into transforming. Although he succeeds in making Soya use Super Saiyan, he is severely injured by the ensuing gap in power; Soya heals him afterward. 8 9 12 15

Soya's strength becomes a major source of direction for Goku. After witnessing Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan 4, Goku chooses the path of Saiyan transformations and accepts Soya's demanding year-long training regimen to strengthen his base form and regain the tail needed for Super Saiyan 4. 17 19 43 44

When Beerus arrives on Earth, Goku openly asks to spar with the God of Destruction despite Vegeta's warnings. Beerus easily defeats him and threatens Earth and the North Galaxy unless the Super Saiyan God is found. 23 25

He is exceptionally persistent. After being badly injured by Soya, he continues forcing his Super Saiyan 3 power upward rather than surrendering, convinced that Saiyans can surpass any limit. 11 12
