Background / History

Beerus is Universe 7's God of Destruction, tasked with destruction to maintain cosmic balance alongside the Supreme Kai's role in creation. He is described as unusually lazy, with sleep and fine food as his chief interests. While sleeping, his body reacts to Soya's Super Saiyan 4 aura, though he is too sleepy to awaken and rolls over to continue sleeping. 19

He awakens early after dreaming of a rival called the Super Saiyan God. Unable to recall the name at first, he asks Whis to investigate; Whis finds no record of such a being but identifies surviving Saiyans on Earth, including Son Goku and Vegeta. Beerus travels to Earth with Whis to pursue this lead, insisting that Whis prepare a lunchbox for the journey. 20 21

On Earth, Beerus questions Goku about the Super Saiyan God. When Goku knows nothing, Beerus prepares to leave, but Goku provokes him into a spar. Beerus accepts on the condition that Goku either defeat him or help locate the Super Saiyan God; otherwise, he will destroy Earth and the North Galaxy. 23 24

Beerus effortlessly defeats Goku's Super Saiyan 3 form, dispersing his Kamehameha with one finger and severely injuring him with a single strike. After Goku later becomes a Super Saiyan God, Beerus still overwhelms him with purple destruction energy and threatens Earth to force Goku to face the attack directly. 25 29

Sensing Soya's genuine divine aura, Beerus abandons his interest in Goku and seeks out Soya instead. Their prolonged battle begins in the starry void and gradually earns Beerus's respect; he considers Soya the first non-God of Destruction to push him that far. 30 32

Beerus later accompanies Soya to Universe 6, where he permits Soya to face Champa and promises a possible reward if Soya defeats Universe 6. After Soya's battle with Champa becomes dangerously destructive, Beerus intervenes and takes the injured Soya back to Universe 7. 49 61 64

Beerus is lethargic and pleasure-seeking outside battle. He prioritizes sleep and food over his destructive duties, initially ignoring Whis's reminder that there is work to do after his awakening. 20

He is exceptionally proud of his position and power, often dismissing mortals and their techniques as insignificant. He nevertheless becomes visibly excited when an opponent proves stronger than expected, repeatedly encouraging Soya to reveal more power. 32 36 75

Beerus is dangerous when provoked, but he is not portrayed as needlessly malicious. He gives Goku a condition for saving Earth, honors his word by allowing time to find the Super Saiyan God, and later intervenes to remove Soya from his life-threatening fight with Champa. 24 27 64
