Daphne is the elder daughter of the wealthy Greengrass family. Her mother, Elise Greengrass, heads the Department of Magical Transportation, following both Daphne's grandmother and great-grandmother in what Daphne describes as a family “dynasty” within the department. The family has followed a matrilineal tradition for roughly three centuries, producing only daughters and taking sons-in-law into the household. 10

She first meets Tom Riddle aboard the Hogwarts Express.
