Background / History

Trunks grew up in a devastated future ruled by Androids 17 and 18. He regarded Son Gohan as both an elder brother and mentor. After Gohan was apparently killed by the Androids, Trunks rushed to the battlefield expecting to recover his body; instead, he found Gohan alive, healed, and vastly stronger. 1 2

At fourteen, Trunks had not yet transformed into a Super Saiyan. Gohan brought him to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Trunks endured tenfold gravity, thin air, and extreme temperatures to train. Under Gohan's instruction, he unlocked Super Saiyan and learned that improving his base strength mattered more than relying on transformations. 3 4

Following two years in the chamber, Trunks emerged hardened and vastly stronger, with a base combat power of 1.5 billion. The pair's excessive power distorted space-time and brought them to the main timeline's past, where Trunks learned that Vegeta was alive. 6

Trunks later accepted Popo's offer to become a God of Spacetime Destruction. His reason was direct: he wanted to restore his destroyed world and allow his mother and everyone else to live. 22 23

Appearance

Trunks is a purple-haired teenage Saiyan–human hybrid. After his chamber training, his physique becomes noticeably more muscular, while his former naivety is replaced by a colder, battle-forged demeanor. 2 6

  • Purple hair and purple eyes. 2 4
  • Wore purple clothing when he rushed to Gohan's presumed death site. 2
  • Initially appeared soaked, muddy, and tear-streaked after the Androids' attack. 2
  • Later uses a black hooded cloak with Gohan to conceal his identity in distorted timelines. 25
  • Wears a golden bracer that stores his seed of Hakai Energy. 23

Personality

Trunks is compassionate and protective, but his life in the apocalyptic future leaves him desperate to become strong enough to prevent further loss. He initially sees Super Saiyan as the sole answer to the Android threat, before Gohan teaches him to value foundational strength and disciplined training. 3 4

He is intensely emotional where his loved ones are concerned. Cell's claim to have killed his mother drives him into Super Saiyan 2, while seeing a restored-timeline version of Bulma and Vegeta moves him to tears. 11 31

Although he can be impulsive in battle, he does not surrender under humiliation or pain. He refuses to kneel to the evil Vegeta despite overwhelming defeat, and that resolve triggers his Super Saiyan 3 breakthrough. 34 37

Abilities & Skills

Saiyan Transformations

Trunks can access multiple Super Saiyan forms acquired through extreme training and emotional resolve.

  • Super Saiyan — First attained through Gohan's ki-channeling instruction. 4
  • Super Saiyan 2 — Triggered by rage over his mother's fate in Cell's parallel timeline. 11
  • Super Saiyan 3 — Reached under Vegeta's sustained abuse and mockery. 37
  • His Super Saiyan 3 is still insufficient to overcome an opponent with substantially greater raw power. 37

Hakai Energy

As a God of Spacetime Destruction, Trunks possesses a seed of Hakai Energy held within his golden bracer. 23

  • Can erase targets from existence, as demonstrated against Lin Fan. 29
  • Can counter enemies whose Miracle Power grants resurrection or immortality. 35
  • Successfully forces the evil Vegeta to evade; grazing the technique erases part of Vegeta's armor. 36
  • His control is initially shallow, making it difficult to land Hakai against far stronger opponents. 37

Energy Techniques

  • Masenko — Uses a blue-white energy attack against the evil Vegeta. 37
  • Energy waves — Fires powerful golden blasts, though some Miracle Power-based enemies can absorb and grow from them. 30

Combat Ability

  • Defeats corrupted Krillin with a single high-speed kick. 32
  • Instantly kills Nappa and Raditz in Super Saiyan form before Raditz revives through Miracle Power. 34
  • Cuts through Planet Vegeta's garrison troops at high speed, killing multiple enemies with each movement. 35
  • Continues fighting despite broken ribs, a crushed wrist, a broken ankle, and severe internal injuries. 37

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Golden bracer — Token of his role as a God of Spacetime Destruction; enables contact with Popo and contains Hakai Energy. 23
  • Senzu Beans — Used during training and to restore him after his battle with the evil Vegeta. 25 37
  • Black hooded cloak — Used with Gohan to hide his identity in the Lin Fan-distorted timeline. 25

Relationships

  • Son Gohan — Mentor, elder-brother figure, and closest partner. Gohan trains Trunks, guides his growth, and repeatedly protects him; Trunks relies on Gohan's judgment and worries deeply for his safety. 2 4 23 44 50
  • Bulma — Mother. Her fate is Trunks's central motivation for seeking to restore his timeline. 11 22 31
  • Vegeta — Father. Trunks initially knows him only through photographs and is shaken to meet him alive in the main timeline. He is devastated by the contrast between his father and the cruel alternate Vegeta. 6 7 37
  • Future Trunks — Counterpart from another timeline who comforts him after Shenron cannot restore their future. 20
  • Mr. Popo — Grants Trunks the role and tools of a God of Spacetime Destruction, directing him toward distorted timelines. 22 23
  • Frieza — An uneasy ally in a distorted timeline; Trunks saves him from corrupted Krillin and Tien Shinhan, then gives him water while learning the history of Evil Kakarot's empire. 32 33
