Background / History
Bardock sent Goku from Planet Vegeta to Earth shortly before the planet's destruction, taking advantage of Frieza's forces being occupied by King Vegeta's rebellion 2. He was later found safely on Mount Paozu by Grandpa Gohan, who raised him 9.
Roger later revealed Goku's Saiyan identity and used the Future Sight Fist to show him a possible future in which his Great Ape transformation kills Grandpa Gohan. Goku initially struggled to accept the warning, but agreed to train to control the form 29.
Under Roger's supervision, Goku repeatedly transformed using an artificial moon. He lost control during the first sessions, forcing Roger to destroy the artificial moon and revert him to normal 30. After a month of training and Grandpa Gohan's support, Goku mastered the Great Ape form 31.
Grandpa Gohan subsequently brought Goku to Master Roshi, who accepted him as a disciple. Goku trained under Roshi for three years, later also receiving training at Kami's Lookout under Roger's guidance 34. Roger then brought him to North Kai's Planet, where he trained for a year and a half before returning to Earth with a battle power of 30,000 35.
After Frieza's assault on Earth, Roger sent Goku to Planet Yardrat for a year of training. Goku returned wearing Yardratian clothing, having learned Instant Transmission and mastered Super Saiyan 58.
Goku later entered the World Martial Arts Tournament at Krillin's request and met Vegeta in the finals. Their Super Saiyan battle ended in a draw, but Goku won after being the first to rise 65 66. Following the tournament, he married Chi-Chi, Grandpa Gohan's granddaughter 66.
While helping rescue his son Gohan from the Gata Defense Force in the Zero Realm, Goku encountered an opponent stronger than his Super Saiyan state and transformed into Super Saiyan II 70 71. He continued training on North Kai's Planet and eventually attained Super Saiyan III after recovering from viral heart disease with medicine developed by Roger 101 102.
Roger later released Majin Buu specifically to give Goku a powerful opponent. Goku challenged Buu in Super Saiyan III, but his stamina was exhausted before he could overcome Buu's regeneration; he conceded defeat and asked for another opportunity to fight him 103 105 107.
Under Whis's guidance, Goku learned to transform his energy into God Ki and became a Super Saiyan God 131. He later tested the form against Rigor's Super Saiyan 4 and recognized the remaining gap in their strength 140. After Beerus allowed him to train on the Destroyer God World, Goku developed Super Saiyan Blue and combined it with the King Kai Fist during his battle against Beerus 143 146 147.
During the Universe 6 tournament, Goku fought Hit and learned to counter his Time-Skip by identifying the assassin's habitual movements. His pressure pushed Hit to improve his technique, prompting Goku to employ the tenfold King Kai Fist 157 158 159.
When Moro attacked Namek for its Dragon Balls, Goku and Vegeta initially confronted him in Super Saiyan Blue. Moro's magic absorbed Goku's energy and forced him out of the transformation, leading Goku to use Instant Transmission to escape with Vegeta 194 195. Upon returning to Namek after preparing for a rematch, Goku activated Ultra Instinct Sign against Moro 196.
Goku later joined Vegeta and their Xeno Timeline counterparts against the upgraded Janemba. He used Ultra Instinct Sign to evade and counter Janemba despite the demon having combat data designed to predict his movements 202 204.
Personality
Goku is innocent and direct, initially asking simple questions about Saiyans, the future, and training rather than reacting with fear to Roger's revelations 29. He is enthusiastic about martial arts and readily accepts difficult training, including repeated Great Ape transformations despite the danger 30.
He also shows compassion toward others. He saves Raditz from Dodoria's attack despite Raditz's earlier hostility, and objects when Vegeta kills Dodoria after the battle 39. Against Frieza, Goku refuses recruitment into the Frieza Force despite the overwhelming difference in power and threats against his companions 50.
Goku seeks powerful but evenly matched opponents rather than easy victories. After achieving Super Saiyan III, he rejects the idea of challenging Roger due to their enormous disparity in strength and instead searches for a suitable rival 102. He remains considerate even in battle, apologizing to Majin Buu after blasting through Buu's body to escape being swallowed 106.
His competitive nature is tempered by sportsmanship and adaptability. During his match with Hit, Goku openly explained how he had learned to predict Time-Skip through Hit's fighting habits, even though the information could help Hit improve 158. He also shows concern for Vegeta during their conflicts, warning him of Super Buu's attacks and offering tactical advice despite their rivalry 134.
