Background / History

Vegeta was the prince of the Saiyans and commanded a squad including Nappa and Raditz. While Frieza ordered Saiyans stationed abroad to return to Planet Vegeta, Vegeta chose to finish his mission first rather than immediately obey. This decision allowed his squad to survive Planet Vegeta's destruction. Vegeta immediately doubted Frieza's claim that a meteor had destroyed the planet, reasoning that neither the planet's technology nor Saiyan strength would have failed to detect one. 3

After the destruction of his homeworld, Vegeta focused on becoming stronger, taking revenge on Frieza, and seizing Frieza's position. He initially dismissed the surviving low-class Saiyans Roger and Kakarot as unimportant. 4

Roger later confronted Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz in the South Galaxy, revealed that Kakarot had surpassed Vegeta, and urged them to consider rebelling against Frieza. Vegeta remained wary rather than reckless, but chose to travel to Earth to verify Roger's claims. 35 36

Following Frieza's defeat, Vegeta remained on Earth and continued training in his Gravity Chamber. His persistent training eventually allowed him to become a Super Saiyan, though Son Goku had reached the form first. 57 58 62

Vegeta later learned that Rigor, a powerful Saiyan who arrived from elsewhere in Universe 7, was his older brother. Vegeta refuses to acknowledge Rigor as family and remains hostile toward his claim. 135

Personality

Vegeta is intensely proud of his royal status and resents being surpassed by low-class Saiyans. Son Goku's victory over him particularly wounds his pride, yet it also forces him to acknowledge the value of training and seek a method to improve. 38

Despite his arrogance, Vegeta is cautious and pragmatic. His refusal to rush back to Planet Vegeta saved his squad, he recognized Roger's concealed power when Nappa and Raditz mistook it for a scouter malfunction, and he withdrew from fighting Frieza once Frieza's transformed strength proved overwhelming. 3 36 48

He is ruthless in combat, killing Dodoria despite Son Goku's request for mercy. However, he later shows concern when Son Goku is injured by Frieza and treats Son Goku as both a rival and a fellow surviving Saiyan. 39 50

Vegeta's desire to overcome Son Goku and Roger remains his foremost ambition. This goal leads him to reject becoming the King of the Demon Realm after defeating Dabura, as he regards further training and surpassing his rivals as more important than ruling. 76

His pride can compromise his combat judgment. When Son Goku advises him to bite Super Buu to escape the latter's restraint, Vegeta refuses to use what he considers an undignified tactic and is ultimately defeated. 134

Vegeta battles Son Goku, attempts to destroy Earth with the Galick Gun, and loses when Son Goku counters with a Kamehameha. Roger then gives him a Senzu Bean and introduces him to gravity training as a path to greater strength. 38

Vegeta accompanies Son Goku to Prison Planet in search of Son Gohan. He fights the evil Saiyan Cumber in Super Saiyan Blue, but Cumber's strength eventually overwhelms him; Cumber's evil aura later briefly takes control of Vegeta and makes him attack Son Goku. 183 184
