Power Progression

Background and History

The Lamenters were created during the Cursed Founding as a Blood Angels successor Chapter. Their altered gene-seed initially appeared successful because it suppressed the Red Thirst and Black Rage, but it introduced an apparently genetic form of catastrophic bad luck. The Chapter’s gene-seed was also unusually vulnerable to corruption, causing other Imperial forces to distrust and avoid them 218 239.

Official records attributed the alterations to Adeptus Mechanicus fanatics acting under orders from higher Imperial authorities. Lin En suspected that Tzeentch had influenced the process, but the passages presenting that suspicion did not establish it as a confirmed explanation for every aspect of the Chapter’s curse 218 239.

Despite their misfortune, the Lamenters maintained an exceptional record of loyalty. They repeatedly answered Imperial calls, fought at the front of battles, and suffered severe casualties without betraying the Imperium. They had no homeworld or official logistical support; their Battle Barge, the Mother of Tears, served as their monastery and only home 210 218 222.

During the Badab War, the Lamenters were deceived into fighting alongside Huron’s rebellion. They withdrew and surrendered after discovering the deception, but were still treated as traitors. The Minotaurs seized the Mother of Tears, confiscated the Chapter’s equipment, and imprisoned the surviving Lamenters on an abandoned prison ship near Sagan II 210 216 217 218.

Lin En specifically requested the Lamenters, Flesh Tearers, and Blood Knights when the Emperor offered him command of an Astartes Chapter. Despite the Emperor’s warning about their corruption, Lin En maintained that he could purify them 205.

Lin En later received Terra’s order transferring command of the Chapter to him. He found the Lamenters starving, wounded, unarmored, and surrounded by the bodies of brothers they had been forced to execute after the Red Thirst or Black Rage became uncontrollable 217. His healing and purification abilities restored their bodies and eased the psychological burden of their imprisonment, prompting the Lamenters to repeatedly declare that they had not betrayed the Imperium 219.

The transfer paperwork listed 401 surviving members, but only 311 remained when Lin En reached the prisoners after two months of confinement. Although the guards announced that the Lamenters had been pardoned, the Grey Knights later argued that the Emperor had not submitted a formal pardon decree to the High Lords Council. The command transfer and the Emperor’s approval therefore did not immediately resolve the Chapter’s legal punishment 217 227 228.

The High Lords Council nevertheless sentenced the Lamenters and Mantis Warriors to Excommunicate Traitoris, ordering their bodies, gene-seed, identities, and records destroyed. Lin En’s intervention prevented the immediate purge. The Chapter submitted to inspection by the Grey Knights, and all 311 Lamenters assembled without resistance, demonstrating their discipline and loyalty 221 227 228.

Lin En accepted the Lamenters’ guilt in the Badab War but rejected extermination as an excessive punishment. He arranged a Penitent Crusade, during which the Chapter entered the Great Rift, reclaimed the Chaos-controlled Forge World Bolomite, and fought Tzeentch’s forces alongside the Dark Angels 223 239 245 246 247 248 249 250 251 252 253 254 255 256 257 258.

The High Lords later reduced the Lamenters’ hundred-year Penitent Crusade by ninety-nine years. The technical sentence reduction functioned as an immediate pardon, allowing the Chapter to publicly reclaim its identity as the Emperor’s loyal warriors 261.

The Inquisition subsequently acknowledged that Tzeentch-corrupted senior Council personnel had helped instigate the improper purge orders. Three Lord Inquisitors personally apologized, and a public statement promised an internal investigation and measures to prevent further incidents. Compensation and Bolomite’s designation as the Lamenters’ homeworld gave the Chapter a foundation for long-term recovery 270.

After gaining Bolomite, the Lamenters interrupted reconstruction to reinforce Baal against Leviathan, reunited with their parent Chapter, and later joined the Flesh Tearers and Blood Knights in rescuing the captives of Slaughterhouse III. They subsequently defended Bolomite and Echo Star and mobilized against Kraken 274 276 283 320 333 344 372 378.

Following Lin En’s takeover of Kraken’s Bio-ships, the Lamenters were entrusted with their upkeep as the newly registered Purple Carapace Chapter. They later fought alongside those auxiliaries against Chaos, accompanied Lin En’s fleet into the Necron-controlled Napheli Sector, and joined his deployment to the Solar System against Abaddon’s approaching assault 383 409 418 437 438.

Appearance

The Lamenters traditionally wore battered Power Armor marked by long service, poor supplies, and repeated repairs. Their Chapter badge is a simple heart painted on each shoulder plate 222.

Personality

The Lamenters are defined by unwavering loyalty, discipline, and endurance. They accept responsibility for the Badab War despite being deceived, and they do not resent the Minotaurs for suppressing them or preserving their equipment after their surrender 222.

Their long history of rejection made them ashamed, fatalistic, and reluctant to express joy. Even their declaration that they were the Emperor’s warriors ended in tears after years of being branded traitors 261. They also carry intense guilt toward their commanders, believing that their misfortune has repeatedly burdened anyone who supports them 235.

Under Lin En’s command, the Chapter gradually becomes more confident and openly enthusiastic. During the assault on the Hell Forge, their battle cry changes into the cheerful “Blow them up” refrain, leading the Custodes to jokingly consider renaming them the “Cheerers” 245. Their loyalty to Lin En is eventually expressed through the battle cry “For my lord!” 254.

Protecting ordinary people remains central to their identity. The narration contrasts the Imperium’s willingness to sacrifice civilians for strategic necessity with the Lamenters’ determination to uphold Sanguinius’s ideals. In the current storyline, they pledge to bring all three million captives of Slaughterhouse III home, and successfully fulfill that promise 320 321 333.

Their attachment to Lin En can make them protective and jealous. During the defense of Baal, they fear that the Ultramarines have come to reclaim him. Phoros later objects to being left behind during the Maelstrom expedition, despite Lin En explaining that he trusts the Lamenters to guard their home and civilians 293 344.

Their devotion also shapes their interpretation of Lin En’s extraordinary powers. After witnessing him take control of Kraken’s Bio-ships, Phoros orders the Chapter to preserve a reverent account that his radiance purified the Tyranids and forbids contradictory rumors. When the Inquisition later comes to inspect the resulting Purple Carapace Chapter, the Lamenters become anxious about Lin En’s fate 380 391.

Their growing confidence remains evident in later campaigns. On a Chaos World, they charge directly into a vast daemon host beneath Lin En’s golden light, condemning the traitors in the Emperor’s name 409.

The Chapter has very few psykers, and Phoros initially judges its natural resistance to a concentrated psychic barrage to be poor. Its immunity during the Bolomite campaign is attributed to Lin En rather than an innate Chapter-wide psychic ability 252 253.

Librarian Support

The Lamenters possess Librarians despite their limited number of psykers. During the later assault on a Chaos World, Lin En orders them to slow the closing Warp Rifts while the Chapter destroys the daemon host. This establishes a specialized psychic-support role without making psychic powers an ability shared by every Lamenter 409.

Enhanced Regeneration

Lin En’s Mass Healing Aura allows the Lamenters to recover from wounds that would normally remove an Astartes from combat.

The Lamenters’ greatest limitation is their defective gene-seed.

During their imprisonment, warriors clawed the metal walls to resist losing control. Without medicine or equipment, Calix could not contain severe cases, forcing the Chapter to execute brothers who could no longer be restrained. Gene-seed from those who died of the Black Rage was considered unusable and was not recovered for implantation 217 223.

Equipment, Vessels, and Infrastructure

• Mother of Tears — The Lamenters’ monastery Battle Barge and, before Bolomite, their only home. It was confiscated during the Badab War and later returned with its equipment 210 221 222. Fris Forge World subsequently replaced damaged hull plating, upgraded and tuned its engines, and filled its stores with supplies 239.
• Power Armor — Formerly battered, mismatched, and poorly maintained; later replaced with standardized Mark VII armor 222 239.
• Bolters and Chainswords — Standard weapons used in massed fire and close combat 227 242.

He selected the Lamenters by name when the Emperor offered him a Chapter and later entrusted them with protecting Bolomite and Echo Star because of his confidence in them 205 344. He subsequently assigns them oversight of the controlled Tyranid Bio-ships and leads them in further campaigns 383 409 437.
• Phoros — Chapter Master. He accepts responsibility for the Badab War, leads the Chapter through the Penitent Crusade, and becomes more hopeful under Lin En’s leadership 223 237 269. He commands the three-Chapter rescue of Slaughterhouse III and leads the Lamenters’ fleet advance against Kraken 320 333 378. In later operations, he kills a Chaos Company Commander with one strike and warns Lin En that landing all twelve Tyranid motherships on Paradise III may make retreat impossible 409 418.
• Apothecary Calix — Senior Apothecary and Sanguinary Priest. He preserves the Chapter’s medical and funeral traditions and leads the burial of the fallen 217 223.
• Blood Angels — Parent Chapter and genetic heritage. The Lamenters remain devoted to Sanguinius and the Blood Angels despite their historical isolation 218 239. Their arrival on Baal reveals that the parent Chapter had tried to contact them rather than rejected them; repeated near-misses had prevented an earlier reunion 283. They later assemble with the Blood Angels and other successors for the defense of the Solar System 437 438.
• Dante — Blood Angels Chapter Master who warmly welcomes the Lamenters to Baal, recognizes Phoros’s resemblance to Sanguinius, and thanks them for returning to help. He apologizes for being unable to publicly defend them or bring them back before their legal rehabilitation 283 284. He later coordinates a combined fleet with Lin En that includes the Lamenters 437 438.
• Flesh Tearers and Blood Knights — Fellow Blood Angels successor Chapters serving under Lin En. They cooperate with the Lamenters in the Slaughterhouse III rescue and Bolomite’s defense against Kraken 320 324 325 333 372. All three Chapters also deploy together on Cretacia and later accompany Lin En to the Solar System 315 437.
• Purple Carapace Chapter — Controlled Tyranid auxiliary force registered by Lin En. The Lamenters are ordered to feed its Bio-ships with battlefield remains and prevent them from starving or reproducing 383. The auxiliaries later block the escape of Chaos Space Marines during a Lamenters assault, and both forces join Lin En’s Solar System deployment 409 437.
• Mantis Warriors — Fellow Penitent Chapter. The Lamenters’ fate is repeatedly linked to the Mantis Warriors, whom Lin En also attempts to protect from unjust punishment 223 237.
• Minotaurs — Former custodians and suppressors. They confiscated the Lamenters’ ship and equipment but stopped firing after the Chapter surrendered and preserved their property 216 222.
• Dark Angels — Allies during the Abyssal Crusade. Their forces fought alongside the Lamenters during the reclamation of Bolomite 258 261. Their backing helped secure the sentence reduction, and their captain defended the Lamenters’ emotional celebrations after the pardon 261.
• Ultramarines — Military allies whom the Lamenters nevertheless suspect of trying to reclaim Lin En during the defense of Baal. Phoros resents that possibility but acknowledges their bravery and their role in drawing the main Ork force away from Slaughterhouse III 293 325.
• Imperium and High Lords Council — Former judges and later political sponsors. The Council ordered the Chapter’s extermination, then granted a pardon, a Terra base, compensation, and Bolomite 221 261 269 270 271.
• Inquisition — Former persecutor that formally apologizes for improper purge orders influenced by Tzeentch-corrupted personnel and compensates the Lamenters and Mantis Warriors 270. Its later inspection of the Purple Carapace Chapter revives the Lamenters’ fears for Lin En 391.
• Tzeentch — Persistent enemy suspected by Lin En of involvement in the Lamenters’ gene-seed corruption and misfortune, and opposed by the Chapter during its Chaos campaign 218 239 242. Tzeentch-corrupted senior Council personnel were later identified as having helped instigate the wrongful purge attempt 270.
• Red Corsairs and Huron — Enemies associated with the deception that led to the Badab disaster. During the Bolomite campaign, the Lamenters destroy a Red Corsairs position, and Phoros kills its commander; Huron himself is absent 246.
• Hive Fleet Kraken — Tyranid enemy confronted during Bolomite’s defense. The narration contrasts this encounter with the original storyline, in which Kraken nearly exterminated the Lamenters while they covered civilian evacuations 371 372 378 380.
• Necrons — Enemies encountered by Lin En’s fleet in the Napheli Sector. Phoros accompanies the expedition to Paradise III, where the Purple Carapace Chapter is committed to a planetary assault 418.
• Abaddon and the Black Legion — Threats prompting Lin En’s deployment to the Solar System with the Lamenters and his other forces. The Lamenters form part of the combined reinforcement fleet preparing to oppose the assault 437 438.

Story Role and Major Arcs

Badab War and Imprisonment

The Lamenters are deceived into supporting Huron’s rebellion, then surrender after recognizing the deception. Their Battle Barge, armor, and weapons are confiscated, and the surviving Chapter is confined aboard a derelict prison ship 210 217 218.

Transfer to Lin En

Lin En assumes command after Terra issues a transfer order. He finds the Chapter physically ruined and psychologically devastated, then uses healing and purification to restore the survivors and suppress their despair 217 218 219.

His appointment follows his personal request to command the Lamenters, Flesh Tearers, and Blood Knights. The Emperor’s approval gives him authority to protect and purify the Chapter, although it does not initially replace the formal legal process concerning its rebellion 205 227 228.

Extermination Crisis

The High Lords sentence the Lamenters to Excommunicate Traitoris. A Grey Knights operation is prepared to eliminate them, but Lin En intervenes, has the entire Chapter inspected, and demonstrates that the 311 survivors remain loyal 221 224 225 226 227 228.

The Grey Knights recognize the Emperor’s Gaze as genuine rather than a Chaos disguise. Lin En explains that the Emperor personally appointed him and that the Lamenters’ corruption can be cleansed, with the Custodes confirming his account 228.

Penitent Crusade

The Lamenters accept a Penitent Crusade rather than deny their responsibility. They travel toward the Great Rift with Lin En, receive new equipment and supplies, and enter Tzeentch’s territory 223 237 239.

Before departure, Calix conducts funerals for the brothers lost during imprisonment. The Chapter cremates them in the Mother of Tears’s reactor and places their ashes in its chapel 223.

Reclamation of Bolomite

The Chapter assaults a Chaos-controlled Forge World, destroys its defenders, defeats Greater Daemons, and helps return the world to Imperial space. Their performance transforms them from an almost extinct and neglected Chapter into a major military force 242 243 244 245 246 247 248 249 250 251 252 253 254 255 256 257 258 261.

During the campaign, the Lamenters also avenge their grievances against the Red Corsairs. Phoros kills their commander, and Lin En confirms that no Lamenter has died or become combat ineffective during the assault 246.

Pardon and Restoration

The High Lords reduce the Penitent Crusade by ninety-nine years, effectively pardoning the Chapter. The Lamenters publicly reclaim their identity as the Emperor’s loyal warriors 261.

Phoros erects a relatively intact metal plate as a makeshift memorial and carves a declaration that the Lamenters have returned from their Penitent Crusade. The nearby Dark Angels witness their celebration, and their captain insists that the Lamenters have nothing to be ashamed of 261.

Return to Imperial Society

The Lamenters receive a base on Terra and are welcomed by Chapters that once avoided them. The exchange of banners, medals, relics, and cultural gifts marks their return to the wider brotherhood of the Adeptus Astartes 269.

They travel toward Terra with the Dark Angels and enter the Solar System aboard the Lion’s Unyielding Truth. The ship’s scale and equipment astonish warriors accustomed to the Lamenters’ former poverty 263 264.

Bolomite Homeworld

The Inquisition apologizes for the wrongful purge attempt and provides compensation. Bolomite is officially assigned to the Lamenters, giving them a permanent base for recruitment, recovery, manufacturing, and training 270 271.

The Chapter retains the former Forge World’s military production facilities except its Titan lines. Imperial reconstruction supplies and population are intended to restore the planet’s environment and industry, ending the Chapter’s dependence on its Battle Barge as its sole home 270.

Rebuilding and Continuing War

The Lamenters help restore Bolomite, construct fortifications and civilian settlements, defend the world, and participate in campaigns against Orks and other threats. They also respond to distress calls from Imperial successor Chapters, showing that their new homeworld has become an active regional stronghold 318 324 342.

When Lin En visits the new settlement, he finds that the warriors left behind and arriving civilians have rapidly completed the main structure of an imposing fortress. He chooses to inspect the residential district first so that the refugees from Cretacia can settle into its new houses 318.

Defense of Baal and Reunion with the Blood Angels

When Lin En receives warning that Leviathan will reach Baal in three months, he stops Bolomite’s reconstruction and prepares the Lamenters to reinforce their ancestral home. One squad remains behind to guard Bolomite and receive Imperial personnel and supplies; the rest depart for Baal 274 276.

Dante welcomes them outside Arx Angelicum and thanks Phoros for returning to help. The reunion corrects the Lamenters’ belief that their parent Chapter disliked them: the Blood Angels had repeatedly attempted contact but narrowly missed them. Dante later explains why Imperial law had prevented a public defense of the Chapter before its rehabilitation 283 284.

During the fighting, the Ultramarines arrive as reinforcements. The Lamenters fear that they intend to take Lin En away, prompting him to tell his warriors to stop whispering and concentrate on the battle 293. Afterward, the Lamenters, Flesh Tearers, and Blood Knights decide to investigate Cretacia’s loss of contact together 300.

Deployment to Cretacia

The Lamenters join the Flesh Tearers and Blood Knights in a fully armed landing on Cretacia. More than two thousand Astartes from the three Chapters assemble for the descent, with Phoros standing at the rear of the Lamenters’ formation as they board their Landing Craft. This figure describes the combined deployment rather than the Lamenters alone 315.

Rescue of Slaughterhouse III

After scouts report that Orks have enslaved three million civilians in the mines of Slaughterhouse III, Lin En places the Lamenters, Flesh Tearers, and Blood Knights under Phoros’s command for a full-scale rescue. He initially remains on Bolomite, trusting the Chapters to conduct the operation themselves 320 321.

Phoros coordinates orbital bombardment and the landing waves, with the Lamenters attacking first, the Flesh Tearers following, and the Blood Knights flanking. The allied Chapters clear the mine approaches, breach the tunnels, open cages, and bring medical teams to the starving captives 324 325.

The Lamenters continue providing suppressive fire for the Flesh Tearers’ advance and personally carry children, elderly civilians, and pregnant women toward the evacuation shuttles 328 330. When a mine collapse traps tens of thousands of civilians, Lin En intervenes personally, cutting through the rubble with Dimensional Slash. Phoros sees the Golden Light and leads Gabriel, Sentoyor, and a Lamenters squad to the cave-in, where they discover him after the rescue 332.

All three million civilians are evacuated. After scans find no other life apart from the remaining Greenskins, Phoros orders Exterminatus, and the Lamenters’ fleet incinerates the planet. The mission concludes with almost no casualties, avoiding the original storyline’s catastrophic losses 333.

Guardianship of Bolomite and Echo Star

When Lin En departs for the Maelstrom to investigate Nurgle’s attack on three Ultramarines successor Chapters, he orders the Lamenters to remain on Bolomite and Echo Star. Their responsibilities include protecting civilians and settlements, building houses, and repairing canals 344.

Defense against Kraken

The Lamenters join the Flesh Tearers and Blood Knights in full mobilization as Kraken approaches. Bolomite’s civilians take shelter, workers accelerate wartime production, and Lin En coordinates the planetary defenses and fleet tracking 372.

As the Iron Boxes diminish, Lin En authorizes Phoros to lead the Lamenters’ charge. Their Battle Barge, two escort frigates, and gunships move to intercept the Tyranids 378.

The Lamenters then witness Lin En’s multicolored canopy destroy the Hive Overlord’s psychic nodes, sever Kraken’s connection to the Hive Consciousness, and take control of most of its Bio-ships. As the Tyranid vessels turn on one another, Phoros instructs his warriors to remember the display and preserve the account that their lord’s radiance purified the swarm 380.

Purple Carapace Supervision

Lin En stations twelve Tyranid motherships and numerous smaller Bio-ships on a barren planet and has them registered as the Purple Carapace Chapter, a loyal Imperial auxiliary force. He orders the Lamenters to feed the vessels battlefield remains and ensure that they neither starve nor reproduce 383.

The arrangement attracts Inquisitorial attention. After reading a report about the Bio-ships, Inquisitor Van Del contacts headquarters on Terra despite his deputy’s warning and reports the presence of twelve mothership-class Tyranid vessels registered as Imperial auxiliaries 383.

Purple Carapace Inspection

Following the emergence of the Purple Carapace Chapter from the controlled Tyranids, Phoros invites Inquisitor Valens to meet Lin En at Bolomite’s Orbital Defense Center. Valens limits his visiting party to himself, his deputy, a scribe, and an attendant 391.

News of the Inquisition’s inspection spreads across Bolomite and alarms the Lamenters, workers, and residents, who fear for Lin En. The account of the approaching visit establishes their anxiety, not a judgment against him 391.

Assault on a Chaos World

Lin En and the Lamenters deploy from the Night Goddess by drop pod onto a Chaos World, confronting a vast host of Bloodletters, Plaguebearers, Flamers of Tzeentch, Chaos Space Marines, and mortal followers. The Lamenters charge beneath golden light with Holy Light Greatswords, while Phoros, Krix, and the other warriors cut down daemons with empowered weapons that permanently erase them 409.

Lin En orders the Chapter’s Librarians to slow the closing Warp Rifts as the daemon tide dwindles. The Purple Carapace Chapter blocks the retreating Chaos Space Marines, and Phoros splits their Company Commander with a single strike 409.

Napheli Sector Expedition

The Chapter’s leadership accompanies Lin En’s fleet into the Necron-controlled Napheli Sector, where Blackstone Arrays suppress his psychic power and weaken Emperor’s Gaze. At Paradise III, Phoros warns that landing all twelve Tyranid motherships may leave them unable to retreat 418.

Lin En nevertheless commits the motherships to the surface and orders the Tyranids to attack every Necron activity signal. The motherships root themselves among the ruins and release the swarm into battle. The initial assault is carried out by the Tyranid auxiliaries; this account does not establish a separate Lamenters ground deployment 418.

Solar System Reinforcement

Lin En brings the Lamenters, Flesh Tearers, Blood Knights, and Purple Carapace Chapter to join Dante’s assembled Blood Angels and successor forces in preparation for Abaddon’s assault. Dante reports that six successor Chapters have arrived, with others still traveling to the rendezvous 437.

Lin En and Dante review Terra’s layered defenses and their combined strength: roughly six thousand Space Marines, more than fifty warships, and twelve Tyranid motherships.
