Ch. 341The Lex Luthor War (V): A Journey to Hell
Plot and events
- Roland leads Wasteland Diana, Batman, Final Knight, Raven, Jason, the Flash, and Wonder Woman through a doorway into Hell to scout a refuge for Diana’s people.
- In Hell’s black desert, Roland encounters Demon Azgalo, who is angry because Roland’s godson has taken some of his underlings. Azgalo redirects the group toward his rival, Demon Andras.
- Satan arrives in a white convertible. He explains that Hell is governed by the Three Kings and the Hell Court, and that Diana can protect her people by accepting the Court’s authority and receiving a fief. Powerful rulers with titles or territory may be called Demons, regardless of their nature.
- Satan introduces Owlman—Batman’s alternate-world brother, now Marquis Thomas Wayne. Batman and Final Knight speak with him privately.
- Roland asks Satan to return Constantine’s heart. Satan refuses, still furious with Constantine, and rejects Roland’s threats. Roland backs off rather than turn the dispute into a war.
- Diana ultimately becomes a marchioness and establishes a fief for one hundred thousand refugees. Roland gives her his underlings’ contact details and cautions her that the refugees could make her a target.
- Before leaving, Final Knight offers the Joker Lantern the option of staying in Hell. The Lantern insists that he and Batman share a uniquely close bond, but Batman’s list of important relationships undercuts that claim.
- Back on the surface, Roland notices Raven concealing something she calls a “local specialty” from Hell—apparently souls. Meanwhile, Superman’s battle with multiple Lex Luthors is still raging, its shock waves pushing back a Speed Force storm.
- The Flash spots several versions of himself trapped inside the storm and races in to rescue them. Despite warnings about its dangers, he reaches in and pulls them out.
Character developments and interactions
- Wasteland Diana takes a pragmatic step to protect her people, accepting a political title and fief without embracing demonhood. She is confident she can defend herself, though Roland recognizes the danger of hosting so many refugees.
- Roland and Satan remain wary rivals despite their outwardly friendly manner. Their negotiation over Constantine ends in refusal, and Roland chooses not to escalate the conflict.
- Batman and Owlman reunite with guarded warmth: Owlman greets him as a little brother, while Batman struggles to know how to respond. Final Knight joins their conversation.
- The Joker Lantern and Batman argue over how close they are. The Lantern’s list of Batman’s adversaries and personal ties highlights Batman’s complicated relationships, especially his lingering concern for Red Hood.
- The Flash acts instinctively and bravely to save his alternate selves, even when the storm poses potentially catastrophic risks.
- Raven appears to have taken something from Hell without permission, prompting Roland’s suspicion.
Significant themes
- Refuge and political compromise: Safety in Hell comes with obligations, status, and acceptance of its governing system.
- Power and diplomacy: Roland’s strength does not solve every problem; he chooses restraint when Satan refuses his demand.
- Belonging and relationships: The Joker Lantern’s claims expose the tangled, often painful network of people connected to Batman.
- Courage and responsibility: The Flash risks himself to rescue others, while Diana assumes responsibility for protecting a vast community.
