Background / History
Raised by Barbaracle
Barbaracle found Froakie's egg in the snow during the previous winter and cared for it until it hatched three weeks later. Froakie initially mistook him for his father; Barbaracle instead introduced himself as his master. He covered the cave floor with large leaves to protect the hatchling's fragile feet 12.
Froakie learned by watching Barbaracle train, copying his punches while receiving corrections. Their life together included gathering flowers in spring and listening to Barbaracle's travel stories on summer nights. By autumn, Froakie had left infancy behind and was training increasingly hard 12.
Choosing Cheng Tian
While gathering Oran Berries for his injured master, Froakie observed Cheng Tian spare a defeated Rattata. Impressed by his compassion and later courage, he secretly protected him from a Beedrill, then openly intervened when Nidoran♀ attacked him. Cheng Tian thanked Froakie and offered to help carry the berries home 9.
At the lakeside cave, Cheng Tian treated Barbaracle's poisoned wound. When an Ariados later attacked Froakie, Cheng Tian placed himself between them, earning both Froakie's trust and Barbaracle's gratitude. That night, Froakie shared Cheng Tian's sleeping bag and became fascinated by photographs of the city 10 11 12.
Barbaracle decided his apprentice should explore the wider world and framed leaving as a ninja mission. Froakie tearfully bowed to his master before catching up with Cheng Tian. He willingly touched the Great Ball's button, completing the capture without the ball shaking 12.
Cheng Tian's parents welcomed Froakie into their home, bought him Water-type food and a blue bowl, and treated him as family. Having previously eaten berries and fish with Barbaracle, Froakie was delighted by the prepared Pokémon food 14.
First Evolution
After Cheng Tian registered for the World Pokémon League, Froakie defeated Song Rongxue's Pancham in a recorded one-on-one match. The battle tested his defenses and close-range reactions against Quash, Foul Play, and Circle Throw, while demonstrating the practical value of Grass Knot and Whirlpool 51 54.
During the school's start-of-term challenge, Cheng Tian intervened after overhearing girls plotting to exhaust Song Rongxue's Pancham through repeated matches. Froakie defeated a Kecleon, then faced a succession of challengers, including Voltorb and Cacnea. By his fifth match, against Mankey, he was exhausted and could no longer maintain Whirlpool 56 57.
Cheng Tian urged him to surpass his limits as he traded Ice Punches with Mankey's Power-Up Punches. The accumulated experience and heightened fighting spirit pushed him to level 16, triggering his evolution into Frogadier. Mankey fled behind its Trainer and lost its will to fight, giving Frogadier a five-win streak. Cheng Tian then forfeited further matches so that his newly evolved partner could receive a full examination 57 58.
Rookie Tournament and Bond Awakening
As Frogadier, he expanded his repertoire with techniques such as Aerial Ace, Scald, Toxic Spikes, and Smokescreen. He combined mobility, defensive water barriers, status effects, and close-range attacks throughout the Rookie Tournament 68 90 91.
In the final against Yishan Middle School, Frogadier defeated Hippopotas in the individual battle and again during the team battle. After Sylveon and Pancham were incapacitated, he defeated Sandshrew but was nearly knocked out by Larvitar's Stomping Tantrum 106.
Cheng Tian's encouragement prompted him to recall Barbaracle's lessons about trusting companions and giving everything for their sake. He rose beneath a powerful circulating torrent, then defeated Larvitar with Cut and Water Pulse to secure Bingzhou No. 1 High School's championship. A later assessment revealed a Bond Level of 6%, although the system refused to explain it 106 108.
Advanced Training and Return to Barbaracle
Frogadier remained strongly motivated to reach his final evolution, searching for Greninja battle videos and pursuing further training. At the National Youth Training Camp, he learned additional moves and eventually received specialized instruction from Nalu and her Quaquaval 146 223 231.
Nalu redirected some of his development toward his legs, emphasizing Greninja's future kicking and jumping capabilities. His training included swimming with power weights while Ferrothorn applied Gravity, and he stayed with Nalu to prepare for the camp's Midterm Exam 231 232.
Seeing Aron reunited with the Machamp at the mine made Frogadier miss Barbaracle. Cheng Tian noticed his homesickness and offered to take him back to visit his master. During the return, Frogadier protected Barbaracle from Toxicroak's surprise Close Combat, using a kick and Protect to buy his master time 252 258.
Before leaving, Frogadier demonstrated his progress through sparring with Barbaracle. His master was pleased with his strength but identified battle habits that still needed correction. At this point, Frogadier was level 33 and approaching his final evolution 261.
Evolution into Greninja
Frogadier later became stuck at level 34 and concentrated on refining his moves. During a confrontation with Zeraora, the destruction of a treasure he cherished drove him into an intense rage. The system detected unidentified energy as he broke through to level 35 and continued toward the next evolutionary threshold 303 311.
As he and Cheng Tian synchronized, Frogadier evolved into Greninja. Both shared the determination to defeat Zeraora, and Cheng Tian felt as though he were personally participating in the battle. Greninja immediately used his newly learned Night Slash and Water Shuriken 312.
Cheng Tian subsequently told Nalu that Greninja had undergone another unusual change after evolution, sharply increasing his strength. Nalu proposed investigating through battle. She also supervised further Water Shuriken practice, during which Greninja revealed that he could form five shuriken and use Mind Reader to make every shot hit 321 323.
Appearance
In his original form, Froakie is pale blue and frog-like, with large yellow eyes and a dark-blue stripe across his head 9.
- Foam mask: Wraps his face in his own foam, leaving only his eyes exposed and giving him a ninja-like appearance 9.
- White hands and wrist areas: Resemble a pair of gloves 9.
- White frubbles: Cover his muzzle, back, and neck; the back and neck foam resembles a bundle 9.
- Changing pupils: His pupils can appear oval or narrow into slits 9.
- Trained legs: Weighted training produces visibly firm, defined leg muscles 19.
Frogadier Form
Evolution lengthens his limbs and gives him a taller, slenderer body. His back becomes darker, his head develops raised sections, and two white spots mark his nose. The ring of foam around his neck diminishes while the foam behind his neck extends and flutters behind him 58.
Greninja Form
His final evolution lengthens his legs, makes his head triangular, and replaces the foam-necked silhouette with a red tongue wrapped around his neck. He reaches a height of 1.8 meters, making him taller than Cheng Tian 312.
Personality
Froakie takes his ninja training seriously. He follows Barbaracle's rules about avoiding unnecessary conflict, staying focused on missions, and keeping his mask on. When Cheng Tian recognizes his species despite the mask, Froakie mistakenly believes his identity has been exposed and worries that he has disappointed his master 9.
His compassion sometimes outweighs his strict interpretation of those rules. He justifies rescuing Cheng Tian by deciding that good deeds are also a ninja's duty, and stops attacking Nidoran♀ after seeing her struggle toward her mate. With other Pokémon, he is considerate: he shares a chestnut with Chimchar and later helps Aron learn Protect 9 15 45.
Froakie is eager to improve and comes to enjoy the process of overcoming difficult training. His enthusiasm for Naruto leads him to experiment with energy control and seek techniques resembling shadow clones and Water Release ninjutsu 17 18 19 28.
Despite his battle experience, he can be easily flustered. Smoochum's advances disrupt his composure during the entrance exam, whereas Sylveon's affection makes him blush and leaves him puzzled by his racing heart 24 30.
His determination can become reckless aggression when he is provoked. Against Mankey, he abandons defense and repeatedly targets its face with Ice Punch, continuing even after the opponent becomes frightened. Zeraora later provokes a similarly intense response by destroying something he treasures 57 311.
His loyalty to companions becomes central to his strength. During the Rookie Tournament final, concern for the defeated Sylveon and Pancham, together with his memories of Barbaracle's teachings, gives him the resolve to stand again. He remains deeply attached to his master and becomes homesick when Aron's family reunion reminds him of their cave 106 252.
He can also resolve problems diplomatically. While gathering Alomomola scales, he asks their leader for permission rather than initiating a battle he doubts he could win 213.
Abilities & Skills
Ninja Combat and Movement
Froakie enters Cheng Tian's team with practical experience gained under Barbaracle rather than relying solely on move strength 9 13.
- Switches between close-range Cut and sudden Water Gun or Water Pulse attacks to create openings 9.
- Uses Lick to paralyze a Pinsir before it can attack, helping resolve the encounter quietly 10.
- Learns to prioritize ranged attacks instead of unnecessarily trading blows with dangerous moves such as Thunder Punch 16.
- Uses Double Team and ranged pressure to reduce exposure to an Electric-type opponent's Static Ability 31.
- As Frogadier, uses Aerial Ace to move behind opponents and immediately follow with Water Pulse, Cut, or Ice Punch 68 86 90.
- Learns to exploit brief openings and evade attacks such as High Jump Kick with repeated Aerial Ace maneuvers 228.
- Receives specialized leg training from Quaquaval under Nalu, preparing to make better use of Liquidation and Greninja's jumping ability 231 232.
Foam and Bubble
His sticky foam protects his skin and serves as both a tool and a projectile 9 14.
- Blocks incoming Poison Sting attacks with thrown foam 9.
- Stores Oran Berries in the foam around his neck 9.
- Obscures opponents' vision by striking their faces or eyes with Bubble 24 31.
- Maintains his ninja mask by thickening the foam over his face 9.
Rasengan-Style Water Pulse
Froakie independently adapts Water Pulse after watching Naruto. Instead of allowing the water ball to burst into ordinary pulses, he rotates strands of Water-type energy in different directions, creating sustained tearing force 17.
- Maintains its shape on impact and repeatedly damages the target 17 24.
- Tears open a punching bag during training 17.
- Overcomes an opposing Electro Ball in the virtual battle challenge 31.
- Initially consumes considerable mental energy; losing control of a few strands can collapse the whole attack 17.
- Remains slower to form and less stable than ordinary Water Pulse when first made battle-ready 20.
- Later uses Water Pulse to clear Leech Seeds from the ground rather than directly attack a Cacnea capable of benefiting from Water-type attacks 57.
- Reaches lv9 by the post-Rookie Tournament assessment 108.
Mind Reader
An unusual Egg Move that senses an opponent's movements and ensures the next attack hits 9 24.
- Enables Cut to strike Smoochum despite her Forewarn-assisted evasion 24.
- Surprises the teacher, Principal, and Director Yan, who have never heard of a Froakie possessing it 24.
- Its inherited origin is not explained in the provided chapters 9.
- Reaches lv2 by the level-21 Frogadier assessment 108.
- As Greninja, combines it with Water Shuriken to land every shuriken during a ten-minute battle against Quaquaval 323.
- Nalu considers the combination important enough to warn Cheng Tian to keep Mind Reader secret 323.
Cut and Punching Moves
Froakie manifests Cut as two condensed-water spikes, wielding one in each hand 9.
- Uses the spikes to parry attacks and deliver alternating slashes 9 16.
- Applies Cut outside battle to split a chestnut for Chimchar 15.
- Possesses Ice Punch as an Egg Move; Cheng Tian trains it as coverage against Grass-types 9 16.
- Uses Power-Up Punch in close combat, with successive uses strengthening the attack 16.
- Cut's water cones become longer and sharper as the move reaches lv7 55.
- Later augments his physical attacks with Swords Dance, performing the move while sheltered inside Whirlpool 200.
- By level 21, Cut is lv9, Ice Punch lv7, and Power-Up Punch lv5 108.
Double Team
Learned through speed training rather than a TM. Treadmill work begins the process, and weighted training allows Froakie to complete it 18 19.
- Reaches lv2 after continued daily practice, with the recorded duplicate count increasing to four 20.
- Uses doubles to distract opponents and conceal the real body's attack timing 31 33.
- The doubles vanish when struck 31 33.
- Reaches lv4 and a maximum of six duplicates before his first evolution 55.
- As Frogadier, produces more than a dozen figures, and later dozens 86 228 290.
- Reaches lv8 by his level-21 assessment 108.
- The apparent duplicates do not provide independently attacking bodies; the technique's original training explanation specifies that only the real body can attack 18.
Whirlpool
Cheng Tian develops Whirlpool into an alternative to the Water Formation Wall Froakie wants to imitate 28 32.
- Trapping: Encloses a target and continuously batters it 32.
- Defense: Surrounds Froakie with spinning water that dissipates incoming force; tennis-ball drills demonstrate the barrier 32.
- Counterattack: Froakie can exit the vortex and redirect it onto an opponent, later using this against a Poochyena 48.
- Limit: At this stage, he cannot control enough water to reproduce a full Water Formation Wall 32.
- Dual control: As Frogadier, maintains one Whirlpool around himself while controlling another around an opponent 90 103 200.
- Offensive combinations: Combines the vortex with Cut, Power-Up Punch, or a direct charge to restrain and damage opponents 90 103 228.
- Environmental interactions: Uses Scald to melt a frozen Whirlpool before breaking the remaining ice with Power-Up Punch 91.
- Later limitations: Strong attacks can breach the water barrier. Scyther slices through it, while Hitmonlee breaks out before it can restrain him 68 228.
- Stamina cost: Exhaustion after repeated battles can leave him unable to use it 57.
Protect and Move Instruction
Froakie creates a small, ring-shaped shield with Protect shortly after learning it 45.
- Demonstrates the move and gestures through its execution to help Aron recall the TM's instructions 45.
- Aron's successful attempt follows immediately after its failed TM session; Cheng Tian considers that recent exposure a possible reason the coaching worked 45.
- Uses Protect while forming Water Pulse, enabling defense and attack preparation at the same time 57.
- Protect reaches lv4 by his level-21 assessment 108.
- Later joins Aron in attempting to teach Protect to Noibat. Repeated explanations and demonstrations exhaust both instructors without producing immediate mastery 205.
- Protect is not invulnerable: a powerful Counter breaks the shield, forcing him to use Substitute 247.
- Uses Protect to interrupt Toxicroak's surprise assault on Barbaracle, although the barrier breaks under Close Combat 258.
Field Control and Coverage Moves
Frogadier develops a broader tactical repertoire beyond his original close-range and Water-type attacks 90 108.
- Grass Knot: Uses it against a charging Pancham and later to trip Hitmonlee out of a spinning Rolling Kick 54 228.
- Toxic Spikes: Scatters hazards between opponents, poisoning Throh as it enters the field 90.
- Scald: Burns Croagunk, melts ice, and later defeats a burrowing Hippopotas by pouring hot water into its tunnel 90 91 106.
- Smokescreen: Learns it at level 19 and fills the battlefield with thick white smoke 90.
- U-turn: Listed at lv2 in his level-21 panel 108.
- Fling: Listed among his newly mastered moves during the Training Island period 223.
- Substitute: Creates a doll to absorb an attack after Protect fails 247.
Liquidation and Steam Mode
Nalu has Quaquaval teach Frogadier Liquidation and emphasizes leg strength as the foundation for mastering it. Weighted swimming and Gravity are used to accelerate that development 231 232.
- Demonstrates a Liquidation enhanced by multiple boosts during the Midterm Exam period 247.
- Uses a technique called Steam Mode, which raises his body temperature substantially 247.
- Retained heat prevents him from immediately forming Ice Punch even after ending Steam Mode 247.
- The same battle leaves his right leg painful and his movement impaired; the passage records this alongside Steam Mode's thermal limitation without establishing a complete account of the technique's mechanics 247.
Bond Phenomena and Synchronization
His first major unexplained awakening occurs in the Rookie Tournament final. After recalling Barbaracle's teachings about companions, Frogadier rises beneath an immense vortex-like torrent and defeats Larvitar with sharply increased speed 106.
- His subsequent panel retains Torrent while adding Current Bond Level: 6% 108.
- The system refuses to explain the new entry because its information is incomplete 108.
- Cheng Tian suspects that filling the Bond Level could eventually enable a Battle Bond transformation, but this is initially his interpretation rather than a confirmed explanation 108.
- During the Zeraora battle, the system detects unknown energy, while mysterious blue ripples centered on Cheng Tian and Frogadier gradually synchronize 311 312.
- Cheng Tian experiences their battle as though he himself were fighting, and the narration describes their minds as one 312.
- After Greninja's evolution, Cheng Tian reports a further transformation with an extraordinary surge in power. Nalu treats its mechanism and possible dependence on battle as matters requiring investigation 321.
Water Shuriken and Night Slash
Greninja learns both moves upon his final evolution and immediately uses them against Zeraora 312.
- Night Slash: Strikes vital areas on both sides of Zeraora's waist and abdomen with sharp water spikes 312.
- Water Shuriken: Initially demonstrates three rapidly spinning shuriken thrown at point-blank range 312.
- Later forms five shuriken at once, exceeding the initial three-shuriken target Nalu sets for him 323.
- Combines Water Shuriken with Mind Reader for reliable multi-projectile hits, while using Aerial Ace to escape Quaquaval's Close Combat 323.

- Training weights — Adjustable equipment set to a five-kilogram load during his Double Team training 19.
- Repaired punching bag — Kept in Cheng Tian's room for practice after Froakie destroys its covering; spiraling Water Pulse is forbidden on it 17 18.
- Whirlpool TM — Purchased for 6,700 yuan to support his interest in Water Release techniques 28 32.
- Sea Incense — A quest reward given to Froakie to boost Water-type moves. He enjoys its fragrance, but its size prevents him from carrying it into battle 42.
- Recovered Sea Incense — Cheng Tian's mother later reveals that she has been using the incense as moisturizer. She returns it after Cheng Tian explains its purpose and value, and Froakie goes back to sleep once it is safely restored 51.
- Power weights for swimming — Used during Nalu's leg-training regimen, together with Ferrothorn's Gravity 232.
- Dive Ball — Cheng Tian specifically brings it when taking Greninja to meet Nalu after his evolution 321.
Relationships
- Cheng Tian — Trainer and partner. Froakie chooses him after witnessing his compassion, receiving his help, and seeing him risk his life for Froakie's safety 9 11 12. Their bond later manifests as a recorded Bond Level and direct battle synchronization during his final evolution 108 312.
- Barbaracle — Guardian and ninja master who raises him from an egg. Froakie deeply admires his strength; Barbaracle sends him into the wider world while promising that he can always return home 11 12. His teachings about companions help Frogadier recover during the Rookie Tournament final. Frogadier later returns to protect and spar with him, receiving further corrections to his combat habits 106 258 261.
- Yamper — Early battle companion and member of Cheng Tian's household. They cooperate against the Nidoran pair and a Pinsir before Froakie's capture 9 10 14. Yamper initially examines his evolved form curiously, then recognizes him by scent 59.
- Chimchar — Bai Yun's Pokémon, friend, and regular sparring partner. Froakie shares food with him and wins more than he loses during their exam preparation 15 20.
- Pachirisu — Lin Lin's Pokémon and friend. Gives Froakie a chestnut; he reciprocates with a clump of foam 15.
- Sylveon / Xianxian — Su Han's Pokémon and an apparent romantic interest. Froakie protects Sylveon from a soccer ball, and Sylveon responds with affectionate licking, ribbon-holding, and a kiss 25 30. Frogadier is distressed when Sylveon falls during the Rookie Tournament final but remains focused on defeating their opponents. They later stay together on the upper bunk during the train journey to Shangjing, and Sylveon continues to show an intense interest in him 106 120 139.
- Aron — Younger teammate who calls him “Big Bro.” Froakie saves him from the initial mine collapse and later helps him master Protect 39 45. They subsequently attempt to teach Protect to Noibat together 205.
- Pancham — Song Rongxue's Pokémon, initially an opponent in a recorded league battle and later a teammate in school competition. Pancham helps bring a distracted Frogadier back to the battle during a team match 54 103 106.
- Nalu — Advanced instructor who guides his leg training, Liquidation development, and Water Shuriken practice. She also investigates his unusual post-evolution transformation and warns Cheng Tian to keep Mind Reader secret 231 232 321 323.
- Quaquaval — Nalu's Pokémon and his instructor in leg-based combat and Liquidation. Later serves as his opponent during Water Shuriken training 231 323.
- Noibat — Younger teammate whom Frogadier and Aron try to teach Protect. In a later recollection, Noibat identifies Froakie and the other frontline fighters as examples of the strength it wanted to attain 205 598.
- Zeraora — Opponent whose destruction of a cherished treasure provokes Frogadier's breakthrough and evolution into Greninja 311 312.
