History
Receiving the Phone
Harry is in his second week at Hogwarts when unusual packages arrive during breakfast. The phone he receives connects him to fans who know his appearance, family history, and events that have not yet happened in his world 1 2 3.
Unlike Hermione, who finds their knowledge intrusive, Harry is comforted by the strangers’ affection. He stays awake all night reading about James and Lily, alternately laughing and crying. Their conversations also introduce troubling claims about his parents’ betrayal, an unknown godfather, and dangers awaiting him in later school years 2.
The group’s albums become another source of family memories. Harry browses drawings of his parents and James’s friends, although he is baffled by the abundance of artwork pairing him with Draco Malfoy 3.
An Altered First Year
Fan discussions identify Quirrell as connected to Voldemort and predict the Halloween troll incident. When that incident occurs, students restrain Quirrell and Dumbledore deals with the troll. Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrive too late to confront it and subsequently question why they went looking for an opponent they could not defeat 3 5 8.
Harry also benefits academically from the group. After reading a discussion of Snape’s opening Potions questions, he answers all three correctly and earns Gryffindor a point, though Snape later deducts more points during the lesson 4.
With a Nimbus 2000 supplied by McGonagall, Harry plays his first Quidditch match and wins, prompting enthusiastic celebrations from Gryffindor 12 13.
Dobby and the Second Year
During the summer, Harry learns that Sirius Black is his godfather and has been wrongly imprisoned, while Ron’s rat Scabbers is Peter Pettigrew in disguise. He initially trusts Sirius’s innocence because of Sirius’s close friendship with James, then learns the fuller account through the group 24 25.
Dobby’s attempts to keep Harry away from Hogwarts disrupt his holidays and friendships. However, intercepted letters cannot isolate Harry while he has his phone. When Vernon locks him in his room and bars the window, Harry contacts the Weasley brothers, who set out to rescue him 25 26.
Harry’s frustration with Dobby continues after returning to school. He asks the fans how to reason with someone who causes trouble but punishes himself when confronted. After learning that an owner can free a House-elf with clothing, Harry eventually arranges for Dobby to receive a sock and gain his freedom 27 30 31 39.
The fans also help Harry with schoolwork. He finishes Herbology homework with their assistance and later notices that his revision is producing real improvement, despite his continued uncertainty about how people in another world know so much about magic 37 40.
Preparing for Sirius’s Escape
Reading about Sirius’s possible future death leaves Harry shaken but determined to prevent it. Harry and Hermione encourage Ron to keep Pettigrew available for the newspaper photograph that will alert Sirius to his survival 34 41 42 43.
At the Dursleys’, the fans provide daily reassurance while Aunt Marge insults Harry and his parents. Their concern helps him resist acting impulsively. When Sirius’s escape finally makes the news, Harry is delighted rather than frightened 43.
Harry later leaves the house and encounters Sirius in his black-dog form. He recognizes his godfather but cannot greet him openly before boarding the Knight Bus. At the Leaky Cauldron, he must listen to Arthur Weasley’s well-intentioned warnings about Sirius while concealing what he knows 44.
Meeting His Godfather
Harry enters his third year eager to meet Sirius properly. He gives up the Hogsmeade trip rather than forge permission, hoping that remaining at Hogwarts will give him a chance to find his godfather 45 47.
When Sirius visits the dormitory at night, Harry chases him barefoot into the corridor. He finally stops Sirius by calling out that he knows about Peter Pettigrew. Their meeting takes place in a hidden room, where Harry explains the phone and introduces Sirius to the fans through a call 48.
Harry urgently opposes Sirius’s intention to kill Pettigrew, insisting that there must be a way to clear his name instead. Afterwards, he continues looking for opportunities to see Sirius around Hogwarts 48 49.
Following another Dementor attack during Quidditch and the destruction of his broom, Harry receives a Firebolt from Sirius. Although Snape confiscates it, Harry treasures it as his godfather’s first gift. He also begins practicing the Patronus Charm with Lupin and receives the Marauder’s Map from Fred and George 49 50.
Appearance
- Scar: Accurately reproduced in fan artwork, much to Ron’s surprise 3.
- Glasses: Nearly shaken off when Wood becomes excited about the prospect of a Firebolt 49.
- Family resemblance: Fans describe him as resembling James while having Lily’s eyes 2.
- Effects of late-night browsing: His first night reading the chat leaves him with red, swollen eyes and dark circles 2.
Personality
Harry responds strongly to affection, especially when it connects him with his parents. The fans’ support makes him feel befriended rather than merely observed, and their concern during his unhappy holidays gives him a warmth he struggles to describe 2 43. By his third year, he considers many moments since receiving the phone among the happiest days of his life 50.
His attachment to Hogwarts is equally strong: he regards it as home and genuinely fears expulsion. He is particularly sensitive to insults against his parents, requiring reassurance from his friends and the group to avoid retaliating against Aunt Marge 27 43.
Harry can be impulsive, chasing Sirius without shoes and continuing after the Golden Snitch despite anticipating danger. He is also receptive to advice: he learns to deny Malfoy the reactions he wants and seeks guidance when unsure how to handle Dobby or approach his godfather 30 46 48 49.
The phone remains a persistent distraction. Harry loses sleep browsing it, struggles to begin homework, and has it temporarily confiscated during Transfiguration. When caught, he promptly apologizes to McGonagall 2 3 18 40.
