Ch. 21Decision

After waking in White Glove’s building, Alex learned that the camp was under control but that more than twenty thousand prisoners had been sent elsewhere. A telegram ruled out escape into the Soviet Union, but a second message gave Alex and Toby a dangerous new route out of Auschwitz.

  • Alex woke beside Audrey, Ella, and Toby Manes, then learned that the concentration camp was under control and the nearby camps had not noticed the previous day’s upheaval.
  • Toby told Alex that over twenty thousand captured prisoners had been sent to other camps, and Alex promised to save them.
  • Alex ordered Toby to prepare capable men for a surprise attack and checked the camp’s limited weapons and ammunition.
  • Alex learned from Howard’s telegram that the Soviet Union would not accept them, leaving no safe route across German-occupied territory.
  • A second telegram suggested a dangerous escape plan, and Alex reassured Toby that Howard Stark could make it work.

Ch. 22Medal

Alex and the seventy thousand people he led from Auschwitz reached Finland, where he learned that Britain planned to honor him for the escape. As the group traveled toward a ship bound for home, Alex embraced the prospect of becoming a celebrated hero.

  • Neil Grant, a Finnish general, welcomed Alex and invited the group to Finland.
  • Finland sent nearly a hundred ships to transport the seventy thousand people from Estonia to Finland.
  • After a night in Helsinki, Alex and the others boarded a train for Inari to continue their journey home by sea.

  • Alex reflected on his anonymous deeds in his previous life and resolved to become a famous hero in this one.

Ch. 23Red Skull Reappears

Alex used Metal Control to stop a German attack on the ships carrying seventy thousand people, then exhausted his Psionic Power and fell into the Patsjoki River. Red Skull captured Alex and Toby’s search party but left for Tønsberg after receiving news of the treasure he had pursued for years.

  • Neil guided the ships carrying seventy thousand people and two thousand Finnish soldiers toward the Patsjoki River and the sea.
  • Alex removed the iron chain blocking the river, then used Metal Control to repel German bullets and shells from both banks.

  • Red Skull received news from Tønsberg, ordered Alex and the prisoners taken to the base, and hurried toward the treasure.

Ch. 24Base Laboratory

  • Red Skull overrode Zola’s cautious settings, causing the Tesseract to flood the laboratory with blue energy.
  • Alex teleported behind Red Skull and struck him with a sledgehammer, but Red Skull survived and chased him.
  • Alex grabbed the Tesseract and vanished, leaving Red Skull and Zola to discover that the machine had produced a blue energy block.

Ch. 28New Recruit Training

Alex, Bucky, and Steve began recruit training together, but Alex and Bucky were assigned to the 107th Infantry Regiment while Steve joined another unit. • Dr. Abraham Erskine and Colonel Phillips debated selecting Steve Rogers or Alex for the serum, and Erskine said he had prepared enough for only one subject.
  • Phillips announced that the Strategic Scientific Reserve would choose pioneers for its super-soldier program, and Agent Carter arrived to oversee the recruits’ intensified training.
  • Phillips staged a grenade test, and Steve threw himself over the grenade to protect the others while Alex watched.
  • Carter told Steve that he had passed the test, then informed Alex that he had passed too and would become one of the first super soldiers.
  • Alex questioned why he had been selected, then agreed that he wanted to become a super soldier.

Ch. 30Super Soldier Serum (Part 2)

Carter brought Alex and Steve to Dr. Abraham’s secret laboratory, where they received the super soldier serum and Vita-Rays. Both emerged transformed, but as the crowd helped them down, Alex was still asleep when a gunshot rang out.

Alex arrived in London with Steve and Bucky, failed to find Marx at his old address, and joined the others for a rescue mission to save captured members of the 107th Infantry Regiment. After jumping from Howard’s plane near Hydra’s base, Alex used Teleportation to bring Steve and Bucky safely to the ground and revealed that he was a mutant.

  • Alex went to Eisenhart’s listed address but learned that Marx had moved out and left without finding him.
  • Steve showed Alex the uniform he had designed, and Alex approved it.
  • Carter told Alex, Steve, and Bucky that Hydra had captured members of the 107th Infantry Regiment and that they would have to rescue them from a heavily guarded base.

  • Alex found an unconscious red-haired woman on an operating table and carried her out of the factory.

Ch. 34Howling Commandos

  • Alex fought Strucker, was cut by his unusual Combat Knife, and escaped with more than a dozen young men using Teleportation.
  • Alex handed the rescued men to Carter, then discussed his healed wound and damaged uniform with Steve, Howard, and Logan.
  • Carter identified Alex’s opponent as Baron Strucker, a Hydra leader whose influence rivaled Red Skull’s.
  • Alex persuaded the team not to pursue Strucker immediately so they would not jeopardize their mission to capture Baron Zemo.
  • Alex Teleported Steve, Bucky, Logan, Nick Fury, and Natasha back to the laboratory and assigned them roles in an attack on Strucker and the Hydra agents.

Ch. 37Death Spores

Alex and the Howling Commandos defeated Strucker’s soldiers, but Strucker released Death Spores as a final attack. The gas left Bucky unconscious, and Alex returned to the empty base seeking an antidote after learning the virus could be slowed by cold.

  • Steve led the Howling Commandos in an assault that overwhelmed Strucker’s soldiers while Wolverine wounded Strucker.
  • Alex fought off the soldiers outside the base with energy guns and exploding energy crystals before returning inside.
