Background / History

Broly was born with a combat power of 10,000, an unprecedented level that King Vegeta regarded as a threat. Believing Broly could become the Legendary Super Saiyan, the king had him exiled as an infant to the barren Planet Vampa. Paragus pursued his son's ship but became stranded there when his own craft ran out of energy. 28

Unlike most Saiyan infants, Broly was not given combat-experience indoctrination. Eighteen years of isolation on Vampa left him simple-minded, illiterate, and inexperienced with the wider universe, though already overwhelmingly powerful. 6

Turles arrived on Vampa and befriended Broly, in part by taking advantage of Broly's trusting nature. Their first spar revealed Broly's immense combat ability and his dangerous emotional instability; after being struck, Broly briefly became cold and violent, nearly killing Turles before returning to normal and apologizing. 6

Broly departed Vampa with Turles and Paragus. He rapidly learned Turles's energy-suppression method, reducing his power from over 500,000 to around 100 in a single day. 8

During Turles's Great Ape experiments, Broly was accidentally exposed to an Artificial Moon and transformed as well. His Great Ape form proved abnormal: it could fly while berserk, drew a multiplier greater than ordinary Saiyans, and remained active even after his tail was torn off. 30 31 Turles stopped the rampage by targeting Broly's tail wound, after which Broly recovered quickly and waited anxiously outside Turles's medical room. 32

He values Turles as a friend and displays genuine concern when he harms him. After their first spar, Broly felt guilty and apologized; later, he repeatedly called Turles's name in an attempt to restore his sanity during Turles's rampage. 6 27 After Turles was hospitalized, Broly waited outside the medical room and embraced him in relief. 32

In battle, however, Broly can shift into a cold, menacing, highly instinctive state. His anger can overwhelm his normal personality, and his Great Ape transformation initially strips away his sanity entirely. 6 30 Following Turles's attack on his tail wound, Broly becomes uneasy around Turles despite still regarding him as a friend. 33
