Background / History
Kanna is the last direct descendant of the Prince family, an old pure-blood line. Her father was killed by Death Eaters after drunkenly saying Voldemort's name; Kanna and her mother survived because they were away from home. Her mother later died in an accident, leaving Kanna alone and making the remaining Prince inheritance a target for relatives and other pure-blood families. 112
Her pet rat, Pochi, was actually Ratri—her great-aunt and an Animagus. Ratri had infiltrated Kanna's life to steal the key to the Prince family Gringotts vault, which only a direct descendant could open. She encouraged Kanna's financial hardship in hopes that Kanna would leave Hogwarts and return home for the key. 106 112
Kanna first met Kyle Chopper aboard the Hogwarts Express while seeking a tonic for Pochi. Although visibly anxious, she was determined to care for her pet and promised to administer the tonic faithfully. 13 14 She was sorted into Hufflepuff despite expectations that her pure-blood background would place her in Slytherin. Snape's unusual attention during the Sorting hinted at his connection to her family. 21
After Ratri was exposed, Kanna confided her history to Kyle and confirmed that his earlier help had disrupted Ratri's plan. Kyle then offered to handle the relatives troubling her during the summer. 112
Appearance
Kanna was initially described as a small, baby-faced girl with chubby cheeks, large watery eyes, and a tendency to blush intensely when embarrassed or under attention. 13 22
- Usually wore loose school robes and a headband during her early Hogwarts years. 524
- Styled her hair into an elegant, simple bun for the Yule Ball. 524
- Wore apricot-yellow Dress Robes without additional accessories at the ball; her appearance drew admiration from Hufflepuff students. 524
- Later carried a silver phoenix-shaped bracelet on her right wrist, made from fragments of the Philosopher's Stone. 741
Personality
Kanna begins as deeply shy and socially anxious. She struggles to accept gifts, avoids attention, and becomes overwhelmed during direct confrontations, even when angry. 14 22 Her reserve does not make her passive: she refuses Kyle's financial help, insists on finding her own way to afford necessities, and ultimately accepts a risky sales role despite doubting herself. 50 51
She is devoted to people and creatures she considers her responsibility. Her attachment to Pochi drives her into the Forbidden Forest, while her concern for Snape later leads her to give him the protection of her phoenix bracelet. 105 952 During the war, she secretly brewed and supplied large quantities of healing potions and antidotes for the Order of the Phoenix. 929
Kanna becomes markedly more confident through friendship, study, and magical achievement. She retains a quiet manner, but she can be blunt with Kyle, tease him, challenge his plans, and persist with difficult tasks such as Patronus training, Apparition, and potion research. 404 680 731
