Background / History

Mordo once trusted the Ancient One deeply and defended her when Stephen Strange doubted her. His faith collapsed after learning that she had drawn on Dormammu's power to attain immortality, a secret he regarded as both betrayal and proof that she had sinned. He considers her death a deserved punishment. 14 26

From this disillusionment, Mordo developed the belief that sorcerers, magical artifacts, and unchecked power attract hostile forces to Earth. He particularly condemns the Eye of Agamotto and Strange's use of time manipulation, viewing both as violations of Earth's natural laws. Although he claims he is not special, he believes he alone has recognized the danger and must reduce the number of sorcerers. 13 26

Mordo infiltrated Avengers Tower by disguising himself as Wong. Strange exposed the deception after the impostor failed to recognize Lu Mingyu from a spell projection, prompting Mordo to reveal himself and attack. During the fight, he wielded the Wand of Watoomb and wounded Lu Mingyu with scattered magic, temporarily weakening the latter's Speed Force. 13

Strange avoided using overwhelming force because Mordo's body was saturated with unstable magic and could cause a magical explosion. Lu Mingyu disarmed Mordo and retrieved the Wand of Watoomb, but Mordo escaped through a Sling Ring portal; Wong traced his destination to an area near the Great Wall in China. 14

After initially rejecting Black Lantern Quicksilver's offer of cooperation, Mordo reconsidered when his confrontation with Strange on Mount Everest convinced him that he could not oppose the Avengers alone. He returned to Quicksilver and formed an alliance to eliminate Avengers individually, identifying Vision and Scarlet Witch as their first priority. 17 26 27

The partnership deteriorated after their infiltration of Avengers Tower yielded only enchanted blank papers. Injured and focused on restoring his magic, Mordo clashed with Quicksilver over their stolen files. Their fight ended when the Dark Blade pierced Mordo's lower back; Mordo escaped through a portal and sought treatment at a hospital. 29 38 49
