Background / History

Bai Ming was born into a branch family of the Bai clan. Initially mindful of etiquette and family harmony, he repeatedly defeated his peers and elders in sparring, becoming a threat to the main family’s succession. The family head ultimately arranged for Marisbury to recruit him into Chaldea. Bai Ming later regarded this as having been sold like merchandise, an event that shaped his hatred of Marisbury and his increasingly vengeful behavior. 129 157

At Chaldea, Bai Ming became linked to a mysterious system that sends him through simulations and installs their results into Pan-Human History. The system preserves the experiences, Noble Phantasms, and records he gains, while Bai Ming must personally answer any resulting summonings. 11

His first major simulation placed his consciousness in fifth-century Britain within the body of Duke Joslin Brando. He trained Mordred, supported Artoria’s rule, became Minister of War, and fought Vortigern. The simulation’s results established many of the legends and armaments later associated with him. 4 5 11

Subsequent simulations took him through Heian Japan, Qin and Han China, the Heavenly Court, the Three Kingdoms era, the Tang dynasty, and later Lostbelts. Across these eras, Bai Ming founded Preservation of Nature, gathered disciples, altered historical outcomes, and accumulated authority over gods, Buddhas, demons, and human institutions. 42 73 75 80

Appearance

Bai Ming is repeatedly described as tall, strongly built, and unusually vigorous. His physical presence is conspicuous even among warriors and supernatural beings. 21 29 41

  • Fair complexion and a distinctly masculine bearing. 74
  • Chiseled, heavily trained musculature. 29 40
  • Wears plain clothing by preference, but owns elaborate divine regalia. 44
  • His divine armor set includes the Seven-Star Jade Crown, Azure Dragon Embroidered Robe, Thunder-Phoenix Armor, Coiled Dragon Jade Belt Hook, and Phoenix Dance Crimson Feather Cape. 36 44

Personality

Bai Ming is impulsive, confrontational, and intensely competitive. He often seeks out powerful opponents simply to test himself, as shown by his challenges to Abe no Seimei, Ashiya Dōman, Minamoto no Yorimitsu, and numerous gods and Servants. 21 23 26

He is also highly pragmatic. Bai Ming treats strength, artifacts, souls, and even historical outcomes as resources to be used toward his objectives. His willingness to refine defeated enemies, rewrite political structures, and impose his own judgment on others makes him feared by allies and enemies alike. 33 48 82

Despite this brutality, Bai Ming can be protective and attentive toward people he considers his own. He trains Mash, Fujimaru Ritsuka, Olga Marie, and Akuta Hinako; supports Fusu’s education; and repeatedly acts to secure the futures of his disciples and companions. 16 36 42 75

His stated ideal is a world in which everyone can live, but his methods are frequently ruthless and detached from ordinary morality. Bai Ming later openly identifies acting according to his own desires as his guiding principle. 13 81
