Background & History

Harry transfers to Midtown High from a Swiss boarding school as the wealthy, polished son of Norman Osborn. Despite his detached high-society manner, he is lonely and openly hopes to make friends. He quickly connects with Lin Hai and Peter Parker by sharing confidential Osborn Enterprises journals on genetic engineering and inviting them to his home laboratory. 8 9

His early friendship with Mary Jane Watson exposes his emotional vulnerability. During a Truth or Dare game, Harry reveals Peter's crush on Mary Jane out of jealousy, then admits that he sometimes feels driven to do things he knows are wrong. Lin recognizes this as an early warning sign of the Osborn family’s inherited illness. 9

Harry becomes Lin’s principal research partner after Osborn Enterprises authorizes investigation of the Red Moon plant. He supervises Lin in the laboratory, provides access to samples and data, activates emergency procedures when Lin absorbs the plant’s energy, and later grants him Level Two laboratory access. 12 He continues helping Lin test altered plants and Life Energy, showing genuine concern when Lin overextends himself. 13

After Lin detects irregularities in Harry’s Life Force, Harry reveals the Osborn familial neurodegenerative disease: every male relative develops neurological degeneration, emotional instability, organ failure, and eventual death; Harry’s genetic testing predicts a 100% chance of inheriting it. He entrusts Lin with a blood sample, beginning a race to cure the disease before Norman completes his dangerous enhancement serum. 24

When Norman becomes the Green Goblin, Harry joins Lin, Peter, and Gwen in preparing a Healing Potion and confronting him. Harry’s defeat by Peter during their Nova-versus-Spider-Man training match makes clear that armor cannot replace reflexes, judgment, or personal combat skill. After learning of Kamar-Taj and magic, Harry initially doubts that he has the intellect or mental discipline to become a mage. As Norman’s health stabilizes, Harry begins transitioning from an observer at Osborn Group to an active participant in its business affairs.
