Background / History

Takigakure assassin and defection

Takigakure sends Kakuzu to assassinate Hashirama while the Hokage travels to the Five Kage Summit. The mission’s intelligence fails to mention Madara and Tobirama accompanying him. Realizing the mismatch, Kakuzu attempts to retreat, but Madara intercepts and defeats him 47.

Hashirama releases Kakuzu over Tobirama’s objections. He understands that Takigakure’s Assassination Squad rewards successful operatives but subjects failures to stigma and severe punishment, despite their willingness to risk their lives. Dave subsequently offers Kakuzu somewhere to turn in Konoha if he loses faith in his village; Kakuzu initially insists that he would never betray Takigakure 47.

Kakuzu nevertheless defects and reaches Dave’s Phone Shop within days. His arrival is much earlier than Dave expected, but the exact events of his departure are not shown. After threatening Aunt Cai, he is beaten by Might Wei and loses four of his five hearts. Dave then recruits him through a mixture of bargaining and threats, securing a 40/60 profit-sharing agreement without the supplied account specifying which party receives each share 55.

Settlement in Konoha

Dave prepares an explanation for Kakuzu’s presence: he failed his assassination mission, defected, and came to Konoha to earn a living under its famously accepting Hokage. Hashirama welcomes him. Tobirama, Madara, and Izuna tolerate the arrangement because they believe any one of them could stop Kakuzu if he caused trouble 62.

Kakuzu begins working at the internet café, then becomes the Love Kidney Company’s finance manager and its principal business negotiator. Dave entrusts him with protecting the company’s technology and commercial interests, including negotiations with Sasuke Sarutobi and the Fire Daimyo 62 91 94.

Family life

Kakuzu finds an unattended crying baby at a dango shop and brings him to the internet café. The child quiets when offered silver, leading the others to mistake his attraction to money for a preference for Kakuzu. Later identified as Kaguya Kimima, he remains in Kakuzu’s care and eventually becomes his son and business apprentice 73 76 262.

Nan Xue comes to Konoha with Kakuzu and stays at his home. He investigates her past after discovering her name on a hit list, learning that she was forced into an abusive marriage to Genjo Miyano, who was subsequently killed on Hanzō’s orders. His concern becomes especially apparent when she waits outside in the cold for his return and later goes into dangerous premature labor 306 316 317 318.

His daughter Konan can overcome his reluctance to spend by appealing to his affection. When she requests funding for Explosive Tags, he gives her 3,000 ryo despite finding the request more intimidating than fighting Madara 393.

Kakuzu later rescues the infant Hidan from an Evil God cult. He refuses a minister’s order to kill the child and, after finding Konoha’s orphanage full, brings him home. Nan Xue proposes adoption, and Konan enthusiastically welcomes her new little brother 412 413.

Appearance

  • Green eyes, repeatedly described as gleaming eerily during threats and negotiations 47 94 199.
  • Face mask and Takigakure forehead protector at his introduction 47.
  • Patched black clothing; he repairs garments rather than discard them, including clothes purchased years earlier for ten ryo 93 94.
  • Black threads extending from his hands and back, used for combat, manipulation, and carrying weapons 92 265.
  • Stocking disguises during covert operations with Dave 265 415.

Personality

Kakuzu treats profit as a governing principle rather than a secondary concern. He protects dividends, rejects free game purchases even for Dave, and objects fiercely when another shareholder receives part of his profit-sharing allocation. His stinginess extends to clothing, medical bills, childcare, and household supplies 55 93 192 390 413.

His greed is tempered by commercial judgment. While coaching Kimima, he encourages extravagant prices and invented expenses but warns against overcharging so severely that a repeat customer is lost. Dave likewise trusts him to recognize where to draw the line in negotiations 91 262.

Kakuzu is intimidating and often ruthless, using violence, debt, legal technicalities, and his reputation interchangeably. He can also be stubborn beyond practical limits: he loses eighteen fights to Madara in three days while protesting a reduction in his profit share 199 390 577.

His family exposes a softer side. He worries about Nan Xue’s health, becomes excessively protective of Konan around Nagato and Yahiko, and protects Hidan despite the child’s origins. Even his concern for Konan and Hidan’s space travels takes a characteristically financial form: he fears they may be cheated in business 317 318 358 413 505.

Abilities & Skills

Earth Grudge Fear

  • Maintains a thread-filled body and five hearts, giving him multiple lives rather than ordinary single-heart vulnerability 55 316 391.
  • Separates masked thread constructs from his body and recalls them afterward 92 93.
  • Extends a hand on trailing threads, pierces enemies, and binds targets 92 265.
  • Seeks replacement hearts through bounty hunting. After one heart dies from insufficient blood supply, he targets a rogue Iwagakure jōnin to replenish his Earth Release heart while earning a bounty 322.
  • His hearts are not invulnerable: Might Wei destroys four, and a later hospital examination finds four of five no longer pumping blood 55 391.

Elemental Ninjutsu

Technique Application
Water Release: Great Barrage Fires several water bullets approximately two meters wide 47.
Water Release: Water Curtain A blue-masked construct fires a massive water cannon to break Reto’s sand hands 92.
Fire Release: Searing Migraine A masked construct launches a fire attack 92.
Lightning Release: False Darkness A masked construct launches a lightning attack 92.
Compound Ninja Art: Raging Wind and Fire Waves Wind and fire constructs merge to produce an enormous sea of flames 92.

Thread Manipulation and Armed Constructs

  • Uses physical threads to control puppets, explicitly stating that he does not know the chakra-thread method normally used for them 275.
  • Carries and operates many weapons simultaneously through threads extending from his back 265 274.
  • Integrates masked hearts with machinery so his mech can combine firearms, armor, and elemental ninjutsu 275 316.
  • Levels the Evil God cult’s base with a barrage from weapons formed through his body’s threads 412.
  • Reattaches Hidan’s dismembered body himself, avoiding hospital treatment costs 416.

Poison Resistance

  • His internal threads keep Hanzō’s poison from affecting him effectively, despite his still possessing flesh and organs 316.
  • This resistance removes Hanzō’s principal advantage and helps force his retreat; the account does not establish immunity to every poison 316.

Accounting and Negotiation

  • Controls the Love Kidney Company’s commercial negotiations and technology licensing 91.
  • Designs premium game weapons, studies skin-sale data, and links monetization directly to his dividends 191 192 208.
  • Uses precise calculations and obscure laws to impose enormous bills; Mabui verifies the arithmetic of his traffic-obstruction fine 577.
  • Teaches financial economics, including how capital constrains and directs society’s development 390 436.
  • Qualifies to represent Konoha in the Olympics’ niche Finance Competition, with no rival among the applicants matching him 223.

Communications and Tracking

  • Houses a miniature signal station beneath his internal organs, with its wiring connected to a lightning-associated heart 459.
  • Uses phone-based tracking while pursuing Hanzō. When the signal disappears, he suggests continuing the pursuit with a summoning beast; that beast is not identified in the supplied passage 497.

Combat Limits

  • Is decisively defeated by Madara during his assassination attempt and by Might Wei upon arriving in Konoha 47 55.
  • Recognizes that Reto outmatches him and sends Dave a distress message rather than relying on his elemental arsenal alone 92.
  • Later demonstrates much greater power, but continues losing repeated confrontations with Madara 390 469.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ten Elite Puppets / Ten Mats of Jin Song — Acquired from Chiyo’s son in exchange for game skins, then modified with Orochiroku 274 275.

  • Finance and licensing: Handles access to the company’s products and technology. Sasuke Sarutobi pays heavily but obtains only manufacturing technology for basic phone casings 91.

Debt Collection

Kakuzu delegates routine overdue accounts but personally pursues major borrowers. His collectors use humiliating tactics, including writing “PAY UP” on walls with feces. A resulting spy’s death escalates into his armed collection visit to Kirigakure 199.

His collection network can entrap even exceptionally powerful figures. Hashirama and Asura work for him while their wages barely cover loan interest. Mu describes years of calls, messages, late-night visits, and collectors emerging through his toilet; Kakuzu is delighted when Mu finally demands a calculation of the full principal and interest so he can repay everything 228 586 587.

Relationships

  • Dave — Employer, long-term business partner, and frequent mission companion. Their initial coercive bargain develops into familiar banter and mutual assistance; Dave later calls him his “prized general” 55 92 315 469.
  • Hashirama Senju — Former assassination target who grants him mercy and welcomes him into Konoha. Later becomes a debtor and inexpensive source of large-scale Wood Release labor 47 62 228 384.
  • Madara Uchiha — Recurring combat opponent and corporate colleague. Kakuzu fiercely resents the half-percent profit-share transferred to Madara 47 390 391.

  • Orochimaru — Stops his near-catastrophic confrontation with Madara and later considers nominating him for Hokage because he could make Konoha wealthy. No appointment is documented 396 577.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Merchant Under Attack

  • While handling exports in the Land of Wind, Kakuzu kills hired shinobi following a dispute with merchants. Reto ambushes him, identifying his profitable service to Konoha as a reason not to let him return 92.
  • Dave arrives to help, then creates a Nine-Tails-powered Doom-shroom. Kakuzu contacts Tobirama for extraction, and the pair escape before the enormous detonation 93.
  • Even after witnessing the explosion, Kakuzu estimates its equivalent cost at at least six hundred billion Explosive Tags 93.

Covert Operations and Technological Warfare

  • Joins Dave’s infiltration of Iwagakure under the codename “Ormo,” although a guard’s money distracts him from the operation 140.
  • Turns the puppet technique acquired through game skins into a modern arsenal rather than preserving its traditional form 274 275.
  • Confronts Hanzō in the Land of Rain and wins through combined mechanical firepower and resistance to poison 315 316.

Corporate Rivalries and Hospitalizations

  • Refuses to accept losing part of his dividends to Madara, despite repeated defeats and hospitalization 390.
  • Correctly identifies the flaw in Hashirama’s paid-phone-booth proposal: customers without phones cannot use phones to scan payment codes. Hashirama’s refusal to answer the objection enrages Kakuzu until he faints; four of his five hearts are found to have stopped 391.
  • A later confrontation with Madara nearly becomes a battle capable of devastating Konoha. Orochimaru intervenes, and Kakuzu is left responsible for reconstruction 396.

Hidan’s Rescue and Adoption

  • Accepts the lucrative S-rank mission against an Evil God cult, verifies a cultist’s unusual survival, destroys the base, and rescues the infant labeled “Successful Test Subject, Hidan” 412.
  • Rejects the finance minister’s demand to kill Hidan and adopts him after the orphanage cannot accept another child 413.
  • Restores Hidan after an explosive outing leaves him in pieces, then later attends a school meeting over the boy’s repeated self-dismemberment and attempt to behead another child 415 416 435 436.

  • Worries that Konan and Hidan may be financially outmaneuvered while traveling; Dave reassures him that the group can be tracked and reached if necessary 505.
  • Returns to large-scale Olympic preparations and financial pressure on visiting leaders, while his longstanding collection campaign against Mu culminates in the prospect of full repayment 568 577 586 587.
