Background / History

Life in the devastated future

Trunks comes from a world where Androids 17 and 18 have killed ninety percent of humanity, leaving survivors hiding underground. Gohan trains him for years and acts as an older-brother figure, but dies fighting the androids to cover Trunks’s escape. Afterward, Trunks struggles to defend the world without adequate guidance; Mr. Popo credits his resistance with preventing humanity’s complete destruction 25 27 28 29.

Arrival in a parallel timeline

Trunks travels back twenty years to warn Goku that two enemies will appear in three years and kill the defenders of Earth. Instead, he finds Son Goku already on Earth, Vegeta capable of becoming a Super Saiyan, and several fighters far stronger than expected. He also mistakes Son Wuzhen for Gohan and discovers that Bulma is married to Son Goku rather than Vegeta 23 24.

Son Goku explains that Trunks has reached a parallel world, not his own past: changing this world cannot undo the destruction of his home. He nevertheless offers to accompany Trunks back and teach him to protect his own future. Before they leave, Trunks intercepts King Cold’s attempted ambush on Vegeta, cuts him apart, and destroys his remains with an energy blast 25 26.

Training and liberation of future Earth

Back in Trunks’s world, Son Goku takes him into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Their training combines a near-death recovery boost, prolonged transformation practice, and sparring. Trunks ultimately completes full-power Super Saiyan 2; Son Goku later describes their stay as two years inside the chamber 28 29 30 34.

Trunks then confronts the androids himself. He kills Android 17 with a punch followed by an energy blast and destroys Android 18 with Masenko. When Son Goku exposes the hidden Cell and explains his absorption abilities, Trunks immediately eliminates him rather than risk another catastrophe 31.

Son Goku takes him to King Kai’s Planet, where he reunites with Vegeta, Gohan, and the other dead fighters. During a spar, Trunks defeats his world’s Super Saiyan 2 Goku and Vegeta together while using only about seventy percent of his strength. He then accompanies Son Goku to Namek as part of the effort to revive the fallen; subsequent wishes restore the androids’ innocent victims and Earth’s buildings 31 32 33.

Further training across worlds

After the future is restored, Trunks accompanies Son Goku back to the other timeline, demonstrates full-power Super Saiyan 2, and receives Kaioken instruction. He returns home and continues training with a Thousandfold Gravity Room built by Bulma and a gravity-adjustable Weighted Suit obtained through Porunga 34 41.

Three years later, Trunks returns with full-power Super Saiyan 3. Seeing Son Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 gives him a new goal after a year without knowing how to advance further. He also accepts that this world’s androids are different people from the murderers in his future 41 42.

Son Goku teaches him Super Saiyan 4 in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Trunks transforms successfully on his first attempt, stays to master the form, and eventually returns to his own timeline after a farewell from the group 43 46.

Appearance

  • Base form: Blue hair; Nappa notices his resemblance to Bulma 24.
  • Weapon placement: Carries a Greatsword in a scabbard on his back 26.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Upright golden hair with a single lock over his forehead, green eyes, a golden aura, and lightning around his body 29.
  • Great Ape: Grows to more than ten meters tall while retaining his awareness 43.
  • Super Saiyan 4: Muscular build, black hair, red-rimmed eyes with emerald-green pupils, and red fur across his upper body except his chest; wears leather pants 43.

Personality

Trunks’s caution comes from years of loss. He repeatedly worries about threats that Son Goku’s companions dismiss, and his memories of Gohan’s sacrifice leave him angry at both the androids and his own inability to help. That grief becomes the trigger for Super Saiyan 2 24 25 26 29.

In combat, he favors decisive action over prolonged taunting. He destroys Cell despite Cell’s claim that he has never killed anyone, explaining that he does not want to risk something going wrong. At this stage, his experiences have made him unwilling to distinguish between good and evil androids 31.

Outside battle, Trunks is polite, grateful, and eager to learn. He offers Son Goku heart medicine, repeatedly thanks him for his instruction, and continues training seriously after saving his world. Although he resents being left to face the androids alone, he initially holds back against Vegeta out of respect. He later accepts Son Goku’s explanation that parallel-world androids need not share the guilt of their future counterparts 28 29 32 41 42.

Abilities & Skills

Super Saiyan transformations

Trunks progresses from ordinary Super Saiyan to mastered Super Saiyan 4 under Son Goku’s guidance 26 46.

  • Full-power training: Learns to sustain a transformation through extended use and combat, then applies the same approach to later forms 29 41.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Initially requires extreme rage because his power has not yet reached the alternative, naturally occurring breakthrough threshold 29.
  • Super Saiyan 4: Requires both sufficient energy to become a Golden Great Ape and enough physical strength to compress that energy into a smaller body 43.
  • Controlled Great Ape: Retains consciousness during the transformation used to reach Super Saiyan 4 43.

Swordsmanship and close combat

Trunks combines swift sword attacks with punches, kicks, and evasive movement 26 31 32.

  • Cuts King Cold into pieces before he can retaliate 26.
  • Evades Vegeta with afterimages and causes Vegeta and Goku to strike one another during their joint attack 32.
  • Overpowers both fighters in close combat despite having comparatively less fighting experience 32.

Ki techniques

Trunks uses ki offensively, defensively, and to attract opponents 26 30 31 32.

  • Masenko: Destroys Android 18 and the initial-form Cell in his future 31.
  • Energy blasts: Finishes Android 17 and erases King Cold’s remains 26 31.
  • Energy barrier: Blocks a combined Big Bang Attack and Kamehameha, then expands to throw both attackers away 32.
  • Ki release: Draws Androids 17 and 18 to a deserted battlefield 30.
  • Flight: Travels and fights in the air 26 32.

Kaioken and gravity training

Son Goku teaches Trunks Kaioken and recommends using it alongside Gravity Room training 34.

  • Eventually reaches a 3,000-fold multiplier 41.
  • Trains with a Thousandfold Gravity Room and a Weighted Suit adjustable up to ten thousand times Earth’s gravity 41.

Saiyan recovery trait

Recovering from near death can increase Trunks’s battle power 28.

  • A Senzu-assisted recovery raises his strength by at least fifty percent 28.
  • Son Goku warns that the boost draws on accumulated potential; immediately repeating the method would provide little benefit 28.

Divine-power cultivation

Son Goku transmits a divine-power cultivation method directly into Trunks’s mind after he asks to learn Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin 29 30.

  • The technique requires precise mental control to form and direct sword energy 30.
  • Trunks receives the prerequisite cultivation method, but is not shown performing the sword technique 30.
  • Son Goku identifies divine cultivation as relevant to Super Saiyan God, while advising Trunks to master earlier transformations first 30.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Greatsword and back scabbard — Used to kill King Cold; Trunks tosses the blade into the air and lets it fall neatly back into its scabbard 26.
  • Time Machine — Carries Trunks and Son Goku between parallel timelines; Trunks operates its spacetime controls and stores it in a Capsule 27 34.
  • Weighted Suit — Obtained through a wish to Porunga; adjustable up to ten thousand times Earth’s gravity 41.
  • Thousandfold Gravity Room — Built by his mother to support his continued training 41.
  • Senzu Bean — Supplied by Son Goku to heal the near-fatal injury used for his recovery boost 28.

Relationships

  • Son Goku, visiting timeline — Mentor and ally whom Trunks calls “Uncle Goku.” Trains him to defeat the androids, teaches cultivation and Kaioken, and later guides him into Super Saiyan 4 25 28 30 34 43.
  • Bulma, Future Timeline — Mother. Shelters him in the ruined future, supports his recovery, and builds the Gravity Room used for his later advancement 24 27 30 41.
  • Vegeta, Future Timeline — Father. Their reunion exposes Trunks’s resentment over facing the androids without help; Trunks nevertheless initially avoids striking him out of respect 31 32.
  • Gohan, Future Timeline — First mentor and older-brother figure. Dies protecting Trunks, whose grief and guilt later trigger Super Saiyan 2 25 29.
  • Goku, Future Timeline — One of the fallen fighters Trunks avenges. Reunites with him on King Kai’s Planet and concedes their spar after recognizing Trunks’s superiority 31 32.
  • Mr. Popo — Recognizes Trunks’s efforts to defend humanity and grants access to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber 28 30.
  • Son Kesi — Identified by Son Goku as a possible counterpart of Trunks in his timeline, despite being Son Goku and Bulma’s second son. Trunks accepts that this does not affect his own existence 42.
  • Androids 17 and 18 — His future’s principal enemies, whom he kills to avenge their victims. He later accepts that their parallel-world counterparts are independent people rather than the same killers 31 42.

Notable Quotes

“Father, Gohan, Uncle Goku, Uncle Piccolo, everyone... I've finally avenged you.” 31

“I just didn't want to risk anything going wrong.” 31

Alternate-Timeline Counterpart

  • The Cell who later appears in Son Goku’s world comes from another parallel timeline. He claims to have killed that world’s Trunks in an ambush after Trunks defeated Android 18, then traveled back in time to find the androids needed for his perfect form. This is distinct from the surviving Trunks trained by Son Goku 43 44.
