Background / History

Rule and Saiyan Subordination

Despite claiming to rule the universe, Frieza controls only a backwater region of the North Galaxy, according to Goku. His army conquers planets, and the Saiyans serve under him before their loyalties begin shifting toward Goku 5 14 19.

Frieza’s family also maintains an internal balance of power. King Cold later reveals that he had used Frieza to keep Cooler in check, fearing that Cooler might overthrow his empire without that restraint 25. Whis separately knows that Beerus was the mastermind behind the Saiyans’ extermination, while Frieza was made to bear the blame 48.

Invasion of Namek

Frieza learns about Namek’s wish-granting orbs through Vegeta and travels there to obtain them. His soldiers attack villages and steal Dragon Balls, while Goku brings a defense force to protect the Namekians 8 9 10.

When Vegeta’s power reaches 24,000, Frieza rebukes Dodoria for panicking and keeps Dragon Ball collection as his immediate priority. He sends Dodoria to find the orbs and Zarbon to pursue Vegeta. After losing contact with both officers, he summons the Ginyu Force 10 12.

Defeat on Namek

Goku’s group confronts Frieza after the Ginyu Force arrives. Frieza initially lets his elite soldiers test them, but Son Wuzhen’s destruction of Captain Ginyu drives him to intervene personally. Goku assigns Piccolo to fight him while Raditz and Nappa eliminate the remaining Ginyu Force members 13 14 15.

Piccolo dominates Frieza’s early transformed forms, breaking his horns and damaging his tail. Frieza’s final form forces Piccolo to escalate his Kaioken repeatedly; although Piccolo’s twenty-fivefold Masenko engulfs him, Frieza survives by raising his output to seventy percent 16 17 18.

Frieza then tries to destroy Namek with a giant energy ball, which Goku kicks back into space. After witnessing Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation, he releases his full power but remains completely outmatched. His final attempt to destroy the planet with Nova Strike ends when Goku’s Kamehameha reduces him to dust 18 19.

Aftermath

Goku arranges the revival of the Namekians killed during the invasion using Earth’s Dragon Balls 19 20. Frieza’s death later brings King Cold and Cooler to Earth seeking revenge. Trunks kills King Cold, while Vegeta destroys Cooler and celebrates the victory as repayment for Frieza’s years of treating him like a dog 23 26.

Frieza changes markedly across three transformations, ending in a compact white-and-blue final form 15 16.

Personality

Frieza combines courteous address with intimidation. He calls his officers “Mr. Dodoria” and “Mr. Zarbon,” yet even a mild reprimand leaves Dodoria trembling. His recurring “Oh ho ho” laughter accompanies both polite offers and threats 10 13 16.

He values strength when it can serve him. Despite Piccolo’s resistance, Frieza repeatedly offers him a position in the Frieza Force, eventually promising authority beneath only himself. Rejection turns that apparent generosity into threats to murder Piccolo’s people before his eyes 16.

His pride makes humiliation especially provoking. He repeatedly dismisses opponents as trash and Saiyans as monkeys, then becomes enraged when Piccolo and Goku slap him or survive his attacks. Even after recognizing the Super Saiyan legend passed down by his ancestors, he insists that an emperor has nothing to fear 13 17 18 19.

When victory becomes impossible, Frieza attempts to destroy Namek rather than accept defeat. His final plan relies on his ability to survive in space and his mistaken belief that Goku cannot 19.
