Background / History
Jigen killed Kawaki’s family when he was young and forcibly took him in as an adopted son. Kawaki grew up in a laboratory as a prospective body for Isshiki’s reincarnation, with little memory of his original home. Other children in the laboratory gradually disappeared from his life 312 315 317.
Unlike Code, who worshipped Isshiki despite being an unsuitable vessel, Kawaki possessed a successful Black Kāma but hated the role imposed on him. His years of confinement left him desperate for freedom and instinctively distrustful of other people 312.
Personality
Kawaki initially keeps his distance even from people who show no hostility. Naruto’s close approach makes him recoil, and an unprompted apology leaves him confused. He resists being treated as an object of pity, but gradually responds to Naruto’s straightforward kindness 312.
Acceptance matters deeply to him. When villagers praise Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki while overlooking his contribution against Boro, he immediately feels that he does not belong. Naruto’s public acknowledgment of his role restores his confidence 325.
His attachment to Naruto eventually becomes possessive. Fear of losing his new family, combined with envy of Boruto’s upbringing, leads him from wanting to protect the household to proposing Boruto’s exile and then death. He also considers imprisoning the adults rather than accepting their refusal 358 360 361.
Kawaki nevertheless remains reluctant to destroy Konoha. He objects to Code bringing Claw Grimes into the village and hesitates over their alliance because his memories of life there still matter to him 366 370. After Code publicly implicates him in an attack, Kawaki retaliates with a sustained beating 371 372.
Abilities & Skills
Kāma
- Vessel compatibility: His original Black Kāma makes him a flawless match for Isshiki’s reincarnation, in contrast to Code’s failed White Kāma 312.
- Enhanced offense: Kāma-powered attacks can blast off Boro’s head, though Boro’s regeneration prevents this from securing an immediate victory 321.
- Team combat: Kawaki and Boruto overwhelm Code together as two Kāma users 348.
- Restored mark: Amado presents the reinstalled Kāma as power without Isshiki’s soul; Kawaki accepts it to protect Naruto 359.
- Healing limit: Kāma cannot repair the damage inflicted by Delta’s Destruction Laser 339.
- Tracking risk: Meihui suspects that Isshiki can locate Kawaki through the original mark 318.
Scientific Ninja Tool Body
- Cellular control: His modified body allows him to freely control his cells and change some of their properties 312.
- Weapon transformation: He turns a hand into a claw against Boro and later threatens Code with a Scientific Blade 325 366.
- Defensive transformation: He produces a shield, but Delta’s laser destroys it and leaves him without an arm 339 341.
- Concentrated firepower: He charges a devastating attack against Boro. Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki then feed him chakra, using him as an energy cannon 325.
Daikokuten and Sukunahikona
- Kawaki plans to use Daikokuten to seal Naruto, Hinata, and Meihui away, but Meihui restrains him before he carries out the attempt 361.
- He later incorporates sealing Naruto and Hinata into his plan with Code 363.
- Code recognizes that both Daikokuten and Sukunahikona counter his own abilities to some extent, making him cautious about pressuring Kawaki 366.
Fire Release
- Uses Fire Release: Fireball as a diversion during the assault on Kara. Code disperses it, but the distraction helps Sarada and Boruto spring their coordinated ambush 348.
Combat Tactics and Kara Intelligence
- Warns Konoha about Boro’s poisonous black mist and identifies Delta as a Kara member before Team 7 attacks her 321 339.
- Helps Boruto destroy Delta’s pursuing drone while Itachi handles the main fight 341.
- Exploits Jigen’s prohibition against killing the vessels by intercepting Code’s attacks with vulnerable parts of his body, creating openings for his teammates 350.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mechanical Arm — fitted in Konoha after Delta destroys his arm; in use during the offensive against Kara 341 348.
- Integrated Scientific Ninja Tools — body modifications used to form claws, a blade, and defensive structures 312 325 339 366.
- Flying Thunder God Mark — placed on him by Meihui so that Meihui can teleport to him if Jigen acts through his Kāma 335.
Relationships
- Naruto Uzumaki — Rescuer and adoptive father. Naruto offers him a home and regards him as equally precious to Boruto. Their relationship breaks down when Kawaki threatens Boruto and the household 312 315 347 361.
- Boruto Uzumaki — Adoptive younger brother and former teammate. Boruto protects him from Code, but Kawaki’s envy and fear of Momoshiki lead him to seek Boruto’s removal and death 313 342 360 361.
- Hinata Hyuga — Welcomes him into the household and cares for him. She slaps him and leaves in tears when he proposes driving Boruto out of Konoha 359 360.
- Meihui Uzumaki — Naruto’s older brother and a source of both protection and fear. He initially considers killing Kawaki, later monitors him, and ultimately stops his attempt to imprison the family 315 335 361.
- Jigen / Isshiki Ōtsutsuki — Captor, forced adoptive father, and the being intending to reincarnate through him. Kawaki hates Isshiki and remains terrified of facing Jigen 312 315 347.
- Code — Jealous fellow vessel and former overseer, later an unstable ally. Code conceals his intention to sacrifice either boy and eventually engineers Kawaki’s public implication in an attack on Konoha 312 342 363 364 370.
- Amado — Scientist who restores and experiments on his Kāma. Amado deliberately uses Kawaki’s fear for Naruto and subsequent isolation to draw him into dependence 358 359 362.
- Ada — Openly infatuated with him. Her desire to fulfill his wishes triggers the identity exchange; Kawaki later asks whether her power can affect Konoha’s strongest defenders 359 360 367.
- Itachi Uchiha — Team 7’s teacher, who protects him from Delta, Code, and Jigen 341 342 344.
- Mitsuki — Teammate whose Omnipotence-altered loyalty shifts from Boruto to Kawaki. Kawaki finds the resulting attention unbearable and asks Ada to restore his memories 362 364 367.
- Sarada Uchiha — Teammate in battles against Kara. After the identity exchange, she conceals her immunity by addressing him as Kawaki Uzumaki 325 348 363.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rescue and Adoption
Naruto discovers Kawaki after crashing through a Kara laboratory wall, then defeats the robots attempting to restrain him. Kawaki accepts an invitation framed as a visit rather than charity. Naruto brings him to Konoha, introduces him as Boruto’s older brother, and decides to adopt him after learning his history 311 312 313 315.
Kawaki’s first crowded hot-pot dinner exposes him to a family warmth absent from the laboratory. As the household accepts him, he begins enjoying ordinary life and teasing Boruto about being his older brother 317 318.
Team 7 and the Kara Offensive
Kawaki fights alongside Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki against Boro, providing the team’s heaviest attack. Later encounters with Delta and Code expose both his combat limits and his lingering fear of Kara. Itachi repeatedly intervenes to protect the students 321 325 339 341 342.
During Konoha’s offensive, Kawaki and Boruto serve as bait for Jigen. Naruto’s promise to protect him and their quiet rooftop companionship strengthen Kawaki’s sense of belonging. In battle, he helps the team outmaneuver Code 347 348 350.
Restored Kāma and Identity Exchange
After losing Kāma, Kawaki initially welcomes the possibility of a peaceful life. Amado unsettles him by claiming that Momoshiki’s presence endangers Naruto and that removing Momoshiki would kill Boruto. Kawaki consequently requests his power back 358 359.
Ada senses his wish to exchange lives with Boruto and unintentionally activates Omnipotence. Most affected people remember Kawaki as Naruto and Hinata’s biological son, while Boruto becomes the adopted child. Kawaki accepts the altered identity, but the family and several powerful defenders remain unaffected 360 361 367.
His proposed exile of Boruto escalates into a demand to kill him and an attempted plan to seal the adults away. Meihui intervenes, and Naruto orders Kawaki out of the house 360 361.
Alliance with Code and Renewed Exile
After another procedure under Amado, Kawaki leaves Konoha and encounters Code. They agree on a plan involving Boruto’s capture and Naruto and Hinata’s imprisonment, prompting Kawaki to return. Code hides his larger ambition to fulfill Isshiki’s will 362 363 364.
Kawaki rejects the prospect of Claw Grimes entering Konoha, but delays deciding whether to abandon Code. When he arrives intending to inform the Hokage, Code appears through a creature emerging from his body and publicly presents him as an accomplice 366 370.
Naruto refuses to hear him out, and Meihui orders him away. At Code’s base, Kawaki beats Code for forcing the situation. Their confrontation is interrupted by Miao-shiki and Mu-shiki, whose overwhelming presence makes Kawaki stop Code from provoking them 371 372 373.
Notable Quotes
“This is where I grew up, but it isn't my home. I can't really remember what my home looked like anymore. I've forgotten...” 312
“Code, I think something this dangerous should stay out of Konoha.” 366
Trivia
- Meihui’s system identifies Kawaki as the current “child of this plane” and warns that killing him might cause the world to collapse. This warning stops Meihui’s initial attempt to eliminate him 315.
- Naruto’s introduction of Kawaki as Boruto’s “big brother” causes Boruto to mistake him for Naruto’s illegitimate son, briefly creating a household scandal 313 314.
- Kawaki’s wish for Boruto’s friendships proves selective: after inheriting Mitsuki’s attention through Omnipotence, he asks Ada to give Mitsuki back to Boruto 363 364 367.
