Background / History
Itachi is Sasuke’s older brother and Fugaku’s eldest son. Sasuke remembers him as gentle and caring before the Uchiha massacre, in which Itachi killed their parents and turned his younger brother’s affection into a determination to avenge the clan 58 111 253.
The circumstances of the massacre are revealed through Meihui’s account, which Itachi confirms. Following the Sharingan-controlled Nine-Tails attack, Konoha’s leadership suspected the Uchiha despite the clan having been assigned elsewhere. Danzō subsequently threatened Sasuke’s life, forcing Itachi to turn his blade against his own clan to protect his brother 111.
Itachi accepted the blame and concealed his motives from Sasuke. Even when gravely ill, he saved a Senzu Bean supplied by Meihui for Sasuke rather than using it himself 111.
Personality
Itachi is guarded and habitually tries to bear responsibility alone. After Meihui saves the brothers, he attempts to leave without explaining the massacre, asking Meihui to care for Sasuke instead. Meihui challenges this secrecy as harmful to the brother Itachi wants to protect 110.
His outward cruelty toward Sasuke conceals affection and pride. He deliberately holds back during their decisive battle, controls the appearances Sasuke interprets as weakness, and privately admires his brother’s progress 107 108 113. Once they reconcile, he becomes openly affectionate, thanks Sasuke’s companions, and teases him about Karin 113.
In combat, Itachi favors observation and precise counters over reckless confrontation. He withdraws when Guy or Jiraiya makes an encounter too risky, exploits Nagato’s recovery interval, and adapts his methods to enemies who absorb ninjutsu 59 61 201 341. His restraint can give way to intense anger when Sasuke is hurt: against Danzō, he deliberately prolongs Tsukuyomi’s torture as punishment 157.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Itachi specializes in genjutsu, using illusions to disable opponents, conceal his actions, and control an enemy’s perception of a fight 59 105 107.
- Incapacitates surrounding ANBU with a glance after Sasuke is wounded 157.
- Uses layered illusions to make Sasuke believe he has struck or critically injured him 107.
- Breaks Kabuto’s sound-based genjutsu by exchanging genjutsu with Sasuke 214.
- Helps Sasuke save villagers whose chakra has become dangerously unstable 252.
- Recognizes Chino’s Ketsuryūgan and explains its abilities and the Chinoike Clan’s history with the Uchiha 253.
- Cannot successfully use his favored genjutsu against Nagato in their later battle; the passage attributes this to Nagato’s Rinnegan having superior ocular power 201.
Tsukuyomi
Tsukuyomi traps a target in an illusion where Itachi can impose prolonged torment within an instant of real time 59.
- Makes Kakashi endure three days and nights of stabbing, leaving him unable to fight 59.
- Provides the private space in which Meihui discusses Itachi’s circumstances and arranges a covert Senzu Bean delivery 91.
- Tortures Danzō for three days and nights; Danzō escapes through Izanagi, and Itachi suffers a bleeding eye and substantial backlash 157.
- Temporarily subdues Boro, who escapes by destroying and regenerating his own brain 322.
- Is not unbreakable: Meihui escapes it, and Sasuke later breaks free with his Cursed Seal-enhanced eye 91 108.
Amaterasu
Itachi produces black flames capable of burning through Jiraiya’s summoned toad-mouth wall and consuming ordinary Fire Release attacks 61 108.
- Opens an escape route from Jiraiya’s confinement 61.
- Burns away both brothers’ Great Fireballs and pursues Sasuke, destroying one of his Cursed Seal wings 108.
- Burns Kabuto’s mass of snakes in cooperation with Sasuke 214.
- Can be repelled by Nagato’s Shinra Tensei 201.
- Serves as an ability he teaches Sasuke to control, alongside warnings against excessive Mangekyō use 115.
Susanoo
Itachi manifests an orange-red Susanoo equipped with the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade. It provides both powerful attacks and protection for others 201.
- Shields Sasuke from Kabuto’s Chakra Scalpels and later defends against the animated cave terrain 214 215.
- Uses an arm to attempt a rescue without directly entering Boro’s poisonous mist 322.
- Advances to its third form, the Crow Tengu, gaining flesh and Tengu Armor over its skeletal frame 341.
- Defeats Delta with physical blows after learning she can absorb ninjutsu 341.
- Remains limited by Itachi’s chakra reserves; he is exhausted and vulnerable during the confrontation with Jigen 345.
Fire Release and Shurikenjutsu
Itachi combines rapid hand seals, fire techniques, and thrown weapons 108 201 322.
- Uses Great Fireball Technique in his battle with Sasuke 108.
- Produces a fireball approximately five meters across after forming six seals in one second 322.
- Uses Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson, combining shuriken with Phoenix Flower Fire to attack Nagato from several directions 201.
- Deflects Sasuke’s thrown shuriken with a kunai and disarms him with precise weapon handling 107 108.
Clones, Crows, and Summoning
Itachi uses clones and animal summons for deception, reconnaissance, communication, and attacks 105 157 253 322.
- Sends a Shadow Clone to retrieve Sasuke’s lost Golden Chelsea boot while concealing the action from Kisame 105.
- Uses an exploding crow clone to consume another of Danzō’s Izanagi revivals 157.
- Sends a crow to follow Chino and Fengxin to Hell Valley 253.
- Summons a ninja cat to carry intelligence about Boro to Sasuke 322.
- Positions explosive clones around Code’s Claw Marks after identifying them as movement points 342.
Transformation Technique
- Disguises himself during the Eight-Tails mission because Akatsuki believes he is dead. Sasuke finds the chosen appearance conspicuously embarrassing 114.
Izanami
- Prepares to use Izanami against Kabuto, but Meihui arrives and stops him before he carries out the technique 215.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Totsuka Blade — A Kusanagi-type weapon wielded by Susanoo. Its blade extends and retracts; pierced targets can be permanently sealed inside its hilt in a drunken, dreamlike genjutsu world. Itachi uses it to seal Nagato 201.
- Yata Mirror — Susanoo’s shield. It withstands a charge from Nagato’s three-headed hellhound without visible damage 201.
- Eight-Plate Tomoe — A thrown Susanoo attack used during Shinra Tensei’s recovery interval, scattering Nagato’s summoned defenses 201.
- Kunai and shuriken — Used for defense, disarming, fire-enhanced attacks, and interventions to protect Sasuke 107 108 114 201.
- Akatsuki Flame Cloud Robes — Supplies these to Sasuke and his companions for their disguised mission against Killer B 114.
- Senzu Beans — Heal injuries but cannot cure his underlying illness. He preserves one for Sasuke before the brothers’ reconciliation 91 111 113.
- Sasuke’s lost Golden Chelsea boot — Retrieves it after Deidara’s explosion, having taken its survival as evidence that Sasuke is alive 105.
- Meihui’s energy-charged seal — Given to the brothers for restricting space at a suspected Ōtsutsuki arrival point near the shinobi world’s border 248.
Health
- Suffers from a severe bloodline illness, with worsening coughing and bleeding before his decisive battle with Sasuke 106 113.
- Senzu Beans restore his injuries but do not cure the disease 91 113.
- The Eternal Mangekyō transplant also leaves the illness unresolved. Meihui hopes to obtain a healing potion through a system reward tied to defeating Kabuto 195.
- By the confrontation with Chino, the narration explicitly states that his illness has been cured; the treatment itself is not shown in the supplied passages 253.
Relationships
- Sasuke Uchiha — Younger brother. Their revenge-driven conflict ends when Sasuke learns the truth about the massacre. They reconcile, exchange eyes, and commit to rebuilding the Uchiha Clan together 111 112 113 195.
- Meihui Uzumaki — Rescuer, mediator, and ally. Saves both brothers, forces their past into the open, arranges their Eternal Mangekyō upgrade, and prevents Itachi from using Izanami against Kabuto 110 111 195 215.
- Kisame — Former Akatsuki partner. Repeatedly protects the exhausted or distressed Itachi and tactfully overlooks his attempts to hide concern for Sasuke. They are later shown together again 61 91 105 244.
- Jūzō Biwa — Former comrade remembered for using the Kubikiribōchō to block a Tailed Beast Bomb and protect Itachi 114.
- Shisui Uchiha — Itachi angrily rejects Danzō’s possession and invocation of Shisui’s eye. Later, Mirai’s resemblance to Shisui makes him reconsider a past request to look after a child 157 260.
- Danzō Shimura — Threatened Sasuke to coerce Itachi into the massacre. Itachi later attacks him after Sasuke is gravely wounded 111 157.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Initially a target of Itachi’s Nine-Tails mission; later an ally who trusts his protection. Itachi names Naruto and Meihui as people capable of changing the shinobi world 59 60 201.
- Karin — Appreciates her care for Sasuke and encourages their relationship, including inviting her on the brothers’ border mission 113 249.
- Sarada — Beloved niece and later student. Affectionately calls her “Little Peanut” and withholds premature knowledge of the Mangekyō Sharingan 260 341.
- Boruto, Mitsuki, and Kawaki — Young ninja under his protection during Team 7’s encounters with Kara. Warns Boruto about self-injuring ninjutsu and refuses to let Code take Kawaki 320 341 342.
- Tsunade — Offers Itachi and Sasuke a home in Konoha and promises to accept responsibility for any fallout involving Danzō 113.
