History
Subjects of the Titans and Dragons
During the Titan–Dragon era, Goblins numbered in the tens of millions across the world. They were a major subject race of the Titans, although some served Primordial Dragons. Their military camps already displayed considerable organization, with enormous catapults, wooden arrow towers, and orderly rows of tents 6.
The devastation of the Titan–Dragon war created an opportunity for their rise. Goblins scattered among different Titan masters eventually rallied around Amigel, whose court supplied food, arranged settlements, and trained transcendent professionals 1 21.
Discovery of the Human Sanctuary
Great Sage Azeba recognized a newly discovered ruin as the key to Goblin supremacy. He ordered Aqil to summon elite legions and skilled craftsmen; a force of nearly ten thousand arrived within a month, and the Goblins opened the ruin’s metal gate three months after the discovery 20.
Inside were surviving humans from the previous era. Their knowledge and weapons accelerated Goblin development, producing inventions powerful enough to threaten the remaining Titans and dragons 20.
The humans’ apparent prestige concealed strict control. Christina reported that the Goblins appropriated their knowledge while forbidding them to educate their children. Amigel required the survivors to choose between permanent bondage to the Goblins and rebuilding as an ordinary race without passing on their former civilization’s knowledge 22.
Overthrow of the Titans
The Goblins recruited other races into the Anti-Titan Alliance. To secure the Winged People’s participation, they promised territory and access to technological products 21.
At the Monen Plain gathering, Amigel sealed the alliance through a blood oath and promised to divide the continent after victory. The combined army numbered approximately one million and marched toward Proadas 26.
At Proadas, Amigel confronted Thunder Titan Yateli while Goblin Legendary warriors and elite armies fought the other Titans. Alchemical devices and cannon-like weapons enabled the Goblins to challenge opponents whose raw strength exceeded their own 27 28.
After victory, Amigel promised land grants and a share of the Titans’ legacy. Captured enemy soldiers were nevertheless distributed among the victors as slaves 30.
Founding and Expansion of the Empire
The Goblins rebuilt Proadas as their capital. Its inherited Titan walls stood five hundred meters high, while Yateli’s skull became the city gate. The palace combined steam-powered design with the architectural style of the previous human civilization 37.
Amigel’s coronation established the Goblin Empire. The High Priest crowned him before Goblin nobles, officials, soldiers, and delegations from allied races 39 40.
In the empire’s first year, Amigel rewarded allied peoples, appointed territorial wardens, and launched an extensive settlement program. Former tribal chiefs were ordered to build cities, two frontier principalities were established, and three hundred distinguished young nobles received fiefs in undeveloped lands 41.
Over the following centuries, imperial campaigns subdued most known habitable lands on the continent. Steam technology, engineering education, art, transcendent power, and population all flourished 46.
Succession Crisis
In year 300, Amigel died after a violent confrontation involving his seventeenth son, A Shou. His thirteenth son, Milan Amigel, hurriedly assumed the throne, provoking rebellions by other princes and drawing nobles and subject races into civil conflict 47 49.
Asa Amigel, the nineteenth prince, later raised an army in the Southern Border with support from Grand Duke Milo Azeba 50.
Jiang You refused to treat Amigel’s death as proof that the empire was defenseless. Historical records known to him credited Azeba with repeatedly preserving the empire throughout its three-thousand-year existence; he also suspected that another Demigod might remain hidden 48.
Society and Government
Population
| Period | Reported Population | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Titan–Dragon era | Tens of millions worldwide | Distributed among Titan and dragon domains 6. |
| Before the Anti-Titan war | Nearly ten million on the continent | United in allegiance to Amigel and the Goblin King Court 21. |
| Imperial founding period | Approximately ten million | About one million lived in the capital; nine million remained distributed across the continent 41. |
| Later expansion | Approximately fifty million | Jiang You’s estimate, accompanying his observation of their rapid reproduction 45. |
Institutions
| Institution | Function |
|---|---|
| Goblin King Court | United scattered tribes through food assistance, settlement support, and professional training 21. |
| Imperial nobility | Governed fiefs and frontier settlements; allied racial wardens held rank equivalent to imperial dukes 41. |
| Royal Engineering Academy | Trained Goblin engineers in Proadas. Excellent education and benefits made it especially attractive to Goblins without transcendent aptitude 46. |
| Royal Griffin Knight Order | Established in year 190 with 693 Griffin Knights; human keepers maintained its mounts 46. |
Treatment of Humans
- Goblin officials and soldiers both monitored and protected the Human Race Tribe, including its griffin-breeding work 44.
- Humans received knight paths reaching only the Hero tier. Amigel refused to provide Legendary paths, arguing that generations of Goblins had developed them through sacrifice and experience 44.
- Azeba proposed Amigel’s marriage to Fiona as a public assertion of control over humanity and a warning to other races 38.
- Despite their dependence on human knowledge, Goblin knights regarded human griffin keepers as subordinate laborers. They did not realize that Lionheart’s influence over the keepers could allow him to seize control of the order 46.
Abilities & Skills
Knight Professions
- Goblins pioneered the Wind, Earth, Water, and Fire Knight classes that later spread throughout the world 24.
- Most Goblin transcendent professionals belonged to knight professions 24.
- Jiang You identified a flying Goblin squad as possible Sky Knights, an advanced form of Wind Knight; their exact class was not confirmed, and none had reached Legendary 24.
- Azeba was initially described as one of three Goblin Legendaries. By the Battle of Proadas, numerous Legendary Goblins were fighting the Titans 20 28.
Engineering and Alchemy
- Human knowledge supported rapid adoption of iron equipment and powerful steam-built weapons. By the alliance gathering, one in ten Goblins had iron weapons and armor 24.
- Specialized devices allowed Legendary Goblins to fight Demigod Titans 28.
- In year 300, engineers combined mechanical technology, transcendent power, and human science into a distinctive alchemical tradition 46.
- Alchemy attracted students from across the continent, including Winged People sent by Jiang You 46.
Military Organization and Mounted Warfare
- Goblin legions maintained disciplined camps, checkpoints, and well-equipped formations 24 26.
- The Yellow-Robed Guards, Amigel’s elite personal troops, consisted entirely of transcendent professionals 26.
- Goblins tamed dwarf wolves as mounts and later developed griffin-mounted aerial forces 20 24 46.
- The Griffin Knight program was intended to reduce imperial dependence on the Winged People’s aerial supremacy 38 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Amigel’s Spear — A divine, godslaying weapon forged through the collective efforts of the Goblin race from rare materials. Amigel used it against Titans and was later found mortally wounded by it 26 47.
- Steam-built steel weapons — Heavy military creations positioned outside the alliance camps; Jiang You sensed that several could threaten his life 24.
- Alchemical devices and cannon-like weapons — Used by Legendary warriors and the central army against the Titans at Proadas 28.
- Iron armor and weapons — Equipped a substantial portion of the population before the empire’s founding, including elite coronation troops 24 39.
- Catapults and wooden arrow towers — Established siege equipment already present during their service under the Titans 6.
Relationships
- Amigel — Unifying king, first emperor, and Demigod military leader; his death triggered the imperial succession crisis 26 28 40 47.
- Great Sage Azeba — Strategist behind the Sanctuary discovery and imperial policies. Later historical records describe him as the empire’s enduring protector and uncrowned ruler after Amigel 20 38 48.
- High Priest — One of the three leading figures of the Goblin liberation movement; performed Amigel’s coronation 21 40.
- Winged People / Jiang You — Crucial aerial allies and later imperial wardens. Goblin leaders also sought counterweights to their power through Griffin Knights and surviving Eaglemen princes 26 30 38 41.
- Human Race — Source of much of the technology enabling Goblin supremacy, but subjected to surveillance and restrictions on knowledge transmission 22 38 44.
- Gnomes — Close friends who attended the alliance gathering to support the Goblins 24.
- Titans and Primordial Dragons — Former overlords whose weakened rule the Goblins overthrew 6 21 30.
Trivia
- Jiang You associates Goblin supremacy with the second chapter of Ferland’s history. By the fifth chapter, the Goblins he remembers are impoverished wilderness dwellers, sharply contrasting with their imperial ancestors 21 24 38.
- Amigel’s elaborate coronation appeared to other races as evidence of Goblin civilization, but Fiona had suggested its ceremonial style 40.
- The use of Yateli’s remains extended beyond the capital gate: Goblin cooks roasted his hand at the victory banquet 30 37.
