Background / History

Arrival and takeover of Stark Industries

Li Qi arrives in a superhero-filled parallel world and encounters the attack on Tony Stark’s convoy. He kicks Tony’s Hummer out of a missile’s path, defeats the attackers, and immediately makes Tony his first puppet. During their journey to New York, he absorbs Tony’s expertise; upon arrival, he also places Pepper Potts under his control 1.

Tony transfers almost his entire fortune to Li Qi, giving him access to assets estimated at more than one hundred billion dollars. Li Qi chooses Tony’s Malibu villa as his development base and orders extensive renovations for armor research 2.

He orders JARVIS to dismiss and investigate Obadiah Stane, subsequently takes control of Stane’s Stark Industries shares, and directs the company toward clean energy and sustainable development. During this consolidation, he forces hostile Ten Rings members and five cruel bodyguards to drown themselves while sparing three security personnel 2 4.

Recruitment and early research

Li Qi identifies Natasha Romanoff despite her undercover position as Tony’s secretary and brings her under mental control. He later recruits Daisy Johnson after sensing her dormant supernatural abilities, arranging a Stark Industries job as cover 4 5 7.

He sends Natasha back to S.H.I.E.L.D. to investigate the Ten Rings and plans to place Daisy there for agent training. At Malibu, he awakens Daisy’s powers through a dangerous energy-field procedure, then supervises further training while developing his armor and its new-element power source 9 11 12 13.

Acquisition of the Ten Rings

Li Qi and Daisy rescue Shang-Chi and Katy from pursuers, creating an opportunity to investigate Shang-Chi’s connection to the Ten Rings. A system gift subsequently gives Li Qi access to Ying Li, whom he meets in a pocket universe and brings back after establishing a mental connection and spending three days with her 13 14 15 18 19.

He controls Xu Xialing and appoints her as a bodyguard. When Xu Wenwu arrives seeking Shang-Chi, Li Qi fights him in armor before overcoming both his mind and the Ten Rings’ protective response. Xu Wenwu then relinquishes leadership of the organization to him 22 24 25.

Li Qi orders Xu Wenwu and Xu Xialing to cooperate in his service and tells Wenwu to stop interfering with Shang-Chi’s wish for an ordinary life. He also controls Dr. Maya and assigns her to continue Extremis research under the Ten Rings 26 27 31.

Campaign against Killian

Using Maya’s intelligence, Li Qi leads his followers, Ten Rings troops, and JARVIS-controlled armor against Killian’s headquarters. The defenders are quickly overwhelmed, but Killian and most of his enhanced fighters have already departed to attack the United States air defense command 28 29.

Li Qi answers Rhodey’s request for help and confronts Killian at the command base. After testing Killian’s capabilities in armored combat, he uses his psychic ability to render him brain-dead. He then threatens the senior military officials with destruction of the base if they continue troubling him, reinforcing the warning with psychic pressure rather than directly controlling them 30.

Chief of Ta Lo Village

With Dijiang providing a means of reaching Ta Lo, Li Qi enters the village through Ying Li’s connections and subdues Ying Nan. Learning that the seal holding back the Soul Beast and Soul Eaters is weakening, he decides to eliminate the threat rather than wait for a breach 29 31 32 33.

The villagers welcome him as their new chief. He considers opening the isolated community to address its declining population and using Stark Industries to improve its defenses 34 35.

Li Qi forces the guardian dragon out of its pool, secures its reluctant cooperation, and rides it into battle alongside Xu Wenwu. He ultimately orders the suits into the hostile dimension and has JARVIS detonate two nuclear bombs after arranging an evacuation. The passage collapses, with the radiation confined to the other world and the connection closed for the time being 37.

Diana and Paradise Island

Li Qi meets Diana through Ta Lo’s Transmission Stone and promises to help her explore the outside world. Since she cannot provide Paradise Island’s location, he tasks JARVIS with finding it and leaves Xu Wenwu responsible for Ta Lo’s security 39 40.

After following clues to the North Sea, he defeats an armed squad belonging to the War God Security Company and helps defend Paradise Island. Hippolyta nevertheless orders his arrest when he announces his interest in Diana. He refuses opportunities to leave, and Diana arranges for him to stay at the Water Curtain Sanctuary rather than in a dungeon 44 45 46 47.

While on the island, he privately expands his ambitions to include bringing Hippolyta under his command. By Chapter 50, he is discussing modern life and the island’s defenses with Diana while JARVIS monitors the surrounding waters and Ares’s forces 46 50.

Li Qi is ambitious and calculating, treating powerful individuals, scientific expertise, and organizations as resources for expanding his influence. He deliberately cultivates connections to the Ten Rings and prioritizes female superheroes or women with unusual physiques as recruitment targets 2 15 19.

His courteous manner coexists with coercive behavior. He uses mind control to secure obedience and intimacy, reads private memories, and decides how much independence followers retain. Daisy’s fear does not stop him from ordering her through a painful awakening procedure, although he later loosens his control enough for her ordinary emotions to return 8 11 22 27.

He is protective when he judges followers unprepared for danger: he keeps Happy and ordinary guards out of a superpowered battle and refuses Xu Xialing permission to fight the creatures threatening Ta Lo. He also welcomes instruction from Ying Li and adapts his equipment after combat exposes its weaknesses 23 28 35.

Despite declaring opposition to weapons that threaten civilians, Li Qi readily uses lethal force, nuclear weapons, and intimidation against enemies or obstructive authorities 4 9 30 37.
