|---|---|---|
| First-year Quidditch Seeker | 161 262 | Demonstrates exceptional flying talent and becomes Hogwarts’ youngest Seeker in a century, although his tactical awareness initially lags behind his flying ability. |
| Supplementary combat training | 841 | Joins William’s tutoring class and begins recognizing the difference between basic exchanges of spells and developed combat technique. Admits that he cannot match Neville’s endurance or progress. |
| O.W.L. qualifications | 954 | Earns seven certificates from nine subjects. Defence Against Dark Magic is his only Outstanding; he fails Divination and History of Magic. |
| Improved potion-making | 970 983 1003 | Uses the Half-Blood Prince’s annotated textbook to improve substantially. Finishes the Draught of Living Death second in class and is later ranked behind only Hermione in sixth-year Potions. |
| Successful nonverbal spell | 1049 | Silently casts Levicorpus on Ron. This is a specific success rather than general mastery: he still struggles to use Nonverbal Spells reliably. |
| Wizarding adulthood | 1089 1090 | Reaches seventeen during captivity. He remains unable to perform Wandless Magic, while the Underworld’s restrictions exhaust his ordinary magic after only a few spells. |
Appearance
- Hair: Black and habitually untidy, described as a bird’s nest or a messy mop 373 701.
- Eyes: Dark green, resembling Lily’s closely enough to unsettle Snape when Harry looks directly at him 1021.
- Scar: Has a lightning-shaped forehead scar that becomes painfully active during supernatural connections and encounters 310 844 1020 1091.
- Build: Grows noticeably taller during his school years, though he remains much shorter than Trene 560.
Personality
Harry is brave and fiercely loyal, but often acts before understanding the danger. He leads Ron and Hermione into the forbidden fourth-floor area despite his limited abilities, and later charges into combat against Lucius Malfoy to make amends for a mistake. His determination repeatedly exceeds his preparation 210 903.
His loyalty is especially clear during the Chamber of Secrets crisis. He refuses to believe Ron would deliberately hurt him, challenges Riddle’s threats, and offers to remain behind if Ron is released. Riddle exploits that attachment to secure Harry’s cooperation in a magical pact 302 303.
Harry’s academic effort is inconsistent. He copies homework, neglects study, and periodically resolves to improve after seeing William or Hermione perform advanced magic. Defence Against Dark Magic is his strongest subject; his later success in Potions depends heavily on Snape’s written instructions 461 947 954 970.
He is sensitive to exclusion and prone to wishful thinking about romance. Being denied information about Voldemort leaves him furious with Dumbledore and his friends, while his crush on Cho leads him to interpret unrelated actions as evidence of affection 277 791 792.
Painful experiences gradually make him more cautious and less judgmental. When investigating Snape’s past, he arranges discreet travel rather than exposing himself on the Knight Bus. Later, he recognizes a similar change in Draco and admits that they might have become friends under different circumstances 1020 1103 1104.
Abilities & Skills
Flying and Quidditch
- An exceptionally gifted flyer and Gryffindor Seeker; described as the youngest Hogwarts Seeker in a century 161 262.
- Develops enough coordination with teammates to help box William in during a match 474.
- Initially concentrates too narrowly on catching the Golden Snitch, lacking Charlie Weasley’s broader tactical use of the Seeker position 161.
Defensive Magic and Dueling
- Earns an Outstanding in Defence Against Dark Magic, his best O.W.L. result 954.
- Frequently relies on Expelliarmus, using a relatively small repertoire in battle 903 1090.
- Receives practical instruction through William’s supplementary lessons, but remains outmatched by experienced Death Eaters 841 903.
- Attempts Expecto Patronum using happy memories of Cho, producing only a thin wisp of white mist before collapsing 461.
Parseltongue
- Can communicate with snakes, having unknowingly spoken to a python at a zoo before learning that he was a wizard 310.
- Initially uses the language passively: seeing a snake triggers it, and he does not recognize that he is speaking a different language 310.
- William’s genealogical investigation finds no inherited Parseltongue gift in the Potter line, making Harry’s ability evidence of his connection to Voldemort rather than proof of Slytherin ancestry 712.
Lily’s Protective Magic
- Lily’s Prehistoric Mystery rebounds Voldemort’s Killing Curse and leaves protective power in Harry’s blood and skin 212.
- Contact with Harry causes unbearable pain to Quirrell in his corrupted state 212.
- Dumbledore extends the protection through Harry’s blood relationship with Petunia, originally requiring him to spend time at her home each year 789.
- Voldemort’s use of Harry’s blood carries that protection into his own body, allowing it to persist for as long as Voldemort lives. This does not make Harry immune to injury, captivity, or death in time-loop events 705 789 1090.
Soul Connection and Visions
- Carries a soul fragment linked to Voldemort; William identifies Harry as a Horcrux while discussing his survival and unusual abilities with Dumbledore 712.
- Experiences events from Voldemort’s perspective rather than merely observing them as an outsider 712.
- Voldemort’s resurrection using Harry’s blood strengthens their connection, allowing Harry to enter his mind through the soul fragment 853.
- Suffers painful involuntary visions, including experiencing an attack from a snake’s viewpoint 844.
- Learns the basics of Occlumency from Snape, but lacks both aptitude and sustained application. Snape eventually refuses to continue teaching him 891.
Potion-Making and Nonverbal Casting
- Improves his practical potion-making by following the Half-Blood Prince’s corrections and shortcuts 970 983.
- Studies inventive jinxes and spells written in the textbook’s margins 983.
- Successfully casts Levicorpus nonverbally, accidentally suspending Ron upside down while he sleeps 1049.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wand — His principal magical tool. When Riddle uses it against William, it resists sufficiently that Riddle changes how he handles it 306.
- Spare wand — Purchased at Cedric’s wand shop and secretly retained after Tom confiscates his original wand. Harry uses it in an unsuccessful ambush during captivity 1090.
- Invisibility Cloak — A Potter family heirloom identified by William as a Deathly Hallow. Harry uses it to leave the Dursleys’ house unnoticed; Moody’s magical eye can nevertheless see through it 396 1020 1073.
- Annotated Advanced Potion-Making — The Half-Blood Prince’s textbook, containing improved brewing instructions and original spells. Harry eventually accepts that the Prince is Snape 970 1004.
- Extension ring — Bought from Akali’s Mystery Shop and enchanted with an Undetectable Extension Charm; used to carry his belongings 1020.
- Game console — A Christmas present from William, which Harry calls his best Christmas gift in years 852.
Relationships
- James Potter — Father and childhood idol. Seeing James publicly humiliate Snape shatters Harry’s idealized image of him 891.
- Lily Evans — Mother. Her protective magic preserves him, while learning about her childhood friendship with Snape becomes a major personal concern 212 1004 1020.
- Ron Weasley — Closest friend, though their relationship suffers jealousy, arguments, and prolonged silence. Harry risks himself for Ron in the Chamber of Secrets and later confronts their damaging pattern of conflict 302 610 630.
- Hermione Granger — Friend and an academic benchmark. Her abilities repeatedly expose gaps in Harry’s own preparation 461 947.
- William Stark — Rescuer, combat tutor, and trusted adviser. Harry credits him with saving both his and Ron’s lives and seeks his help when troubled by Dumbledore’s behavior 411 841 852.
- Albus Dumbledore — Protector and mentor whose secrecy frustrates Harry. Dumbledore arranges controlled trials early in Harry’s schooling, then decides that genuine hardship is necessary for his growth 792 891.
- Severus Snape — Initially a hated teacher and later his Occlumency instructor. After learning about Snape’s bond with Lily, Harry’s attitude changes sharply and he begins seeking his approval 891 1031 1049.
- Sirius Black — Godfather and James’s close friend. Harry turns to him for answers about his father’s behavior toward Snape 37 891.
- Cho Chang — Longstanding crush. Harry repeatedly mistakes her actions for romantic interest 277 791.
- Ginny Weasley — A later romantic interest. Before leaving Privet Drive, Harry fears that he may never get the chance to confess his feelings 1071.
- Draco Malfoy — Longtime rival and frequent suspect in Harry’s investigations. Their hostility eventually softens into mutual recognition and tentative reconciliation 232 1031 1103 1104.
- Hagrid — Friend whom Harry visits and worries over when he returns injured 833.
- Dobby — Warns Harry against returning to Hogwarts and later speaks admiringly of him 232 411.
- The Dursleys — Relatives with whom he has a deeply strained home life. Despite years of wanting to leave, their final separation causes him unexpected grief 232 790 1071.
- Hedwig — His owl, whose attempts to attract his attention include dropping on his head when he ignores her hunger 1071.
- Voldemort / Tom Riddle — Enemies who exploit Harry’s blood, attachments, and soul connection. The diary’s Tom later holds him captive in the Underworld 302 708 853 1089 1090.
History
Childhood and Hogwarts
After James and Lily’s deaths, Harry is left at the Dursleys’ door as a baby with a lightning-shaped scar. He grows up at Privet Drive and unknowingly speaks Parseltongue during a zoo visit, before he understands that he is a wizard 308 310 1020.
At Hogwarts, Harry joins Gryffindor and becomes a gifted but inexperienced Seeker. His early adventures also establish a recurring problem: he willingly enters dangerous situations without the magical skill to control them 161 210 1096.
Chamber of Secrets
Ron carries Harry out of his dormitory while Harry is only partly aware of what is happening. Harry awakens beside an unresponsive Ron and meets the diary’s Tom Riddle, who uses Ron’s suffering to coerce him into a magical pact 301 302 303.
The pact makes Harry bear the damage associated with Tom’s soul sacrifice. Harry survives unexpectedly; William later examines this survival alongside his Parseltongue and visions when identifying him as a Horcrux. Harry himself later remembers being struck by Avada Kedavra during the incident 712 1091.
Apparent Death and Voldemort’s Resurrection
During the tournament crisis, Harry is believed to have died while pursuing Krum after Ron’s apparent murder. William’s investigation reveals a substitution scheme: Barty Crouch Jr. disguises Harry as Krum using Polyjuice Potion, and Winky delivers the real Harry to Voldemort 689 701 709.
The time-loop events include Harry being crushed by a falling boulder. In the graveyard ritual, Wormtail forcibly takes Harry’s blood for Voldemort’s resurrection, strengthening their connection while also transferring Lily’s protection into Voldemort 705 708 789 853.
Fifth-Year Frustration and Combat Training
Harry resents being kept uninformed about the struggle against Voldemort. He joins William’s tutoring class but remains less accomplished than classmates who practice consistently, particularly Neville 792 841.
Snape’s Occlumency lessons end after Harry has learned the basics without applying himself adequately. Dumbledore and William deliberately stop shielding him from every consequence, hoping that painful experience will force him to mature. At the Department of Mysteries, Harry’s attempt to compensate for his mistake by fighting Lucius Malfoy leaves him badly injured 891 903.
Sixth Year and Snape’s Past
Harry earns seven O.W.L. certificates, but his Potions result initially falls short of the requirement for his ambition to become an Auror. The Half-Blood Prince’s textbook subsequently transforms his classroom performance 954 970.
Although William identifies the Prince as Snape at the start of term, Harry refuses to accept it until further evidence makes denial impossible. Slughorn’s account of Lily and Snape’s childhood friendship also prompts Harry to investigate his mother’s past 970 1003 1004.
After overhearing Petunia confirm their history, Harry arranges discreet help from Mundungus, visits his maternal grandparents’ abandoned house, and goes to Spinner’s End. There, Snape pulls him indoors and warns that a dangerous visitor is present. Harry later views a childhood memory of Snape watching Lily 1020 1021 1022.
The discovery changes Harry’s attitude toward Snape. He participates more actively in Defence Against Dark Magic and practices a spell partly in the hope of earning the professor’s recognition. His separate task of obtaining a memory from Slughorn goes poorly because his direct questioning makes Slughorn distrust his motives 1031 1032 1049.
Departure from Privet Drive and Captivity
Before his seventeenth birthday, Harry prepares to leave Privet Drive while the Order relocates the Dursleys. The departure unexpectedly devastates him: despite their troubled relationship, he feels that he is losing the only home he has known 1071 1072.
He disappears before the Order can collect him. He is subsequently shown as Tom’s captive in the Underworld, where he loses track of time and believes that he has turned seventeen 1073 1089.
An ambush with his concealed spare wand fails because ordinary magic is severely restricted there. After Harry attempts suicide, Tom prevents his death, brutally punishes him, and forces him to take a healing potion 1090.
Renewed Resolve
In a later conversation, Dumbledore challenges Harry’s tendency to equate House membership with character and emphasizes Snape’s courage as a spy. His definition of Gryffindor gives Harry a firmer sense of purpose 1096.
Harry subsequently recognizes that Draco has also matured through suffering. When Draco asks whether they might have become friends if their first meeting had gone differently, Harry answers that they might have. They then leave together for Malfoy Manor to meet Voldemort 1103 1104.
