History
Early Life and First Year
Ron is Mrs. Weasley’s youngest son and starts Hogwarts a year after William Stark. Before enrolling, he is already a target of Fred and George’s teasing: when his mother proposes cutting his long hair, a twin suggests shaving his head instead 13.
On his first Hogwarts Express journey, Ron befriends Harry Potter and meets Hermione Granger. After boasting about his magic, he unsuccessfully attempts to turn Scabbers yellow with a rhyme supplied by George. William tells him that Fred has a replacement wand for him, made by Cedric 127.
Ron receives a Hogwarts map from George, but possessing it does not prevent him and Harry from repeatedly arriving late and losing Gryffindor points. Mrs. Weasley subsequently orders maps to monitor Ron and the twins 134 135.
His first year includes several dangerous encounters:
- Midnight duel: Ron offers to act as Harry’s second against Malfoy. Their nighttime outing ends with Filch pursuing Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville, and the group encountering Fluffy 153 630.
- Amortentia poisoning: A chocolate makes Ron declare his love for Margery Selwyn and attack Harry. William stuns him, identifies the potion, and administers an antidote and Elixir to Induce Euphoria 182.
- Wizard’s Chess obstacle: Ron defeats Professor McGonagall’s enchanted chess challenge, allowing Harry and Hermione to continue. The white queen knocks him unconscious during the game 211.
Flying Car and Tom Riddle’s Diary
Ron and Harry travel toward Hogwarts in the enchanted Ford, flying above the Hogwarts Express and making themselves visible to its passengers. Their friends alert Dumbledore and Mr. Weasley because the stunt threatens both the boys’ schooling and Mr. Weasley’s employment 242.
During his second year, Ron uses Tom Riddle’s diary to complete homework and learn magic. He deliberately changes some correct answers to avoid making the improvement too obvious, and asks the diary to teach him to become an Animagus 280.
At the Duelling Club, Ron volunteers to fight Malfoy in Harry’s place. After Malfoy threatens his father’s job and summons a snake, Ron casts Dark Light Crossbow Bolt, piercing the snake’s head and seriously wounding Malfoy. Ron insists that he did not understand the spell’s effects; Snape threatens him with expulsion for using Dark Magic 279 280.
William persuades Ron to reveal the diary’s involvement. When the group searches his dormitory, they discover that the diary, his old wand, and Scabbers are missing. Bloodied bedding convinces Ron that his rat has been killed 280.
Riddle later explains that he gained Ron’s trust, connected to his soul, and absorbed his life. Under an “equivalent exchange,” he manipulated Ron’s resentments into attacks on other people without Ron consciously understanding what was happening. Riddle also reveals that Ron carried Harry out of the dormitory during the incident 302.
During the ensuing crisis, Ron convulses as a young Basilisk emerges from his chest. Harry places Ron’s wand in his mouth, and Ron’s bite leaves it badly cracked. Scabbers eventually returns after being missing for more than half a year 303 315.
Pettigrew’s Impersonation
Peter Pettigrew, who had lived as Scabbers, steals Ron’s old wand and moves Riddle’s diary to Lockhart. He later uses Polyjuice Potion to impersonate Ron while keeping the real Ron transformed into a groundhog 479.
William exposes the substitution through inconsistencies involving Scabbers’s tonic and Pettigrew’s possession of a wand. He deduces that Pettigrew intended to have the transformed Ron killed and permanently take his place; Fudge’s insistence on a trial disrupts the plan 479.
Ron spends roughly half a year in groundhog form and is hospitalized afterward. Although his physical injuries are limited, the psychological effects are severe. Hogwarts pays his medical expenses 529 530.
His family initially devotes considerable attention to his recovery, supplying special meals, tutoring, entertainment, and visits. Over time, Ron’s increasingly demanding and irritable behavior exhausts them. A demand for a birthday Firebolt provokes Charlie into attacking him, and William intervenes 529 530.
A later argument with Hermione concerns William and Hermione’s Italian adventures, their reward money, and their paid House-elf employees. Hermione rejects Ron’s demand for an elf to serve him and rebukes him for belittling dangers he did not experience. She leaves with William, followed by Charlie 530.
Debt and Work as a Test Subject
Pettigrew also steals Ron’s savings and borrows more than thirty Galleons in his name. Ron discovers the debts after returning to school, by which time his own borrowing and purchases from Akali’s Mystery Shop have further depleted his finances 492 591.
Unable to repay his roommates, Ron repeatedly flees his creditors. Fred and George eventually settle the debts and make him their new human test subject 591.
The arrangement continues for about two years and helps Ron earn money for additional classes. It ends when George tells him that he has developed resistance to their potions and that cheaper test subjects are available 840 953.
Triwizard Tournament
Ron’s first visible attempt to cross the Goblet of Fire’s Age Line fails: he is thrown backward and temporarily develops gray hair, a long white beard, and a bald patch. He is nevertheless later selected as a Gryffindor Champion alongside Hermione 598 604.
Ron enjoys the attention and hopes that winning will clear his debts. His friendship with Harry deteriorates after a Rita Skeeter article leads him to accuse Harry of trying to steal his moment of fame. Lavender Brown becomes an enthusiastic listener to his accounts of becoming a Champion 604 610.
| Event | Outcome |
|---|---|
| First Task | Ron uses Dark Magic learned from Riddle to attack a dragon’s eyes and obtains two Golden Eggs. His result is invalidated because the magic is prohibited 625 626 628. |
| After the First Task | Ron apologizes to Harry and admits that he regrets becoming a Champion. He proposes withdrawing, but Hermione explains that selection by the Goblet creates a binding obligation to continue 630. |
| Second Task | After searching the library all night for information about dragon eggs, Ron falls asleep and misses the task. He is disqualified from that round 665. |
| Maze investigation | In a time-loop sequence, William witnesses Harry, disguised as Krum, stage Ron’s apparent death. Ludo Bagman then casts the actual Killing Curse that kills Ron 710. |
The maze death is not Ron’s final status: he appears alive in subsequent school years 806 1103.
Yule Ball and Lavender
Ron prioritizes finding an attractive Yule Ball partner and dismisses Eloise’s appearance, drawing Hermione’s disgust. His impulsive invitation to Fleur ends with her ignoring him, leaving him humiliated 642 646.
He then suggests that Hermione choose either him or Harry as her partner. When he insists that William will prefer Fleur, Hermione publicly announces that William is her boyfriend; Ginny confirms that the relationship began in Paris 646.
After Padma rejects him because she considers him a dark wizard, Ron attends with Lavender. His choice leads to a fight with Seamus, and he later tears Lavender’s rented dress and has to repair it 649 650 978.
Lavender is subsequently identified as Ron’s girlfriend. When rumors claim that Harry awarded Ron the Keeper position in exchange for sexual favors, she accuses Harry of interfering in their relationship. Ron becomes embarrassed by her behavior and regrets dating her 1055.
Later School Years
Ron becomes Gryffindor’s Keeper, but nerves and hostile spectators undermine his early performances. William repeatedly wrong-foots him in his first match 829 830.
His later school difficulties include:
- O.W.L. results: He fails four subjects and receives no Outstanding grades 953.
- Keeper tryouts: A borrowed Nimbus 2200 spins out of control and carries him away from the pitch 978.
- Poisoned mead: He drinks oak-matured mead at Slughorn’s party and collapses in convulsions 1005.
- Improved match performance: Against Ravenclaw, a rise in confidence allows him to display skills usually seen when playing with Harry 1056.
Ron also repeatedly clashes with Ginny over her relationships with Michael Corner and Dean Thomas. His interference escalates to letters home and, during one confrontation, an attempted spell against Ginny that Harry deflects 814 977 1005.
At the beginning of seventh year, Ron celebrates being among Hogwarts’s oldest students and frightens a first-year for speaking too quietly. That evening, Voldemort surrounds the school, and William evacuates the students through goblet Portkeys 1103.
Appearance
- Hair: Red, with a fringe that had grown long before he entered Hogwarts 13 1103.
- Face: Freckled 1103.
- Height: By seventh year, he is considerably taller than an incoming first-year 1103.
- Recovery-related change: During his prolonged hospitalization, a healer advises him to avoid greasy food because he has gained too much weight 529.
Personality
Ron strongly wants recognition and dislikes being overshadowed. He admires William’s achievements while envying his talent, money, and connections. Hermione’s rise is particularly difficult for him to accept because he once regarded her as merely a diligent student rather than someone substantially more capable than himself 127 530 531.
His confidence fluctuates between boasting and intense self-doubt. He revels in the praise accompanying his selection as Champion, yet before a Quidditch match calls himself useless and questions why he joined the team. His later improvement as Keeper demonstrates how heavily his performance depends on his mental state 604 829 1056.
Ron can be loyal and protective: he volunteers to duel Malfoy for Harry and joins Ginny in urgently seeking William’s help when Harry disappears. However, he also lashes out when he feels humiliated, withdraws from friends during disputes, and tries to exert authority over Ginny’s dating life 279 610 814 1024.
Money and status are recurring sensitivities. Insults about his father’s work provoke him, and he dreams of expensive purchases and tournament winnings. His prolonged recovery intensifies his demands on his family, though it follows genuine psychological trauma from Pettigrew’s captivity 529 530 581 604.
