Background / History

Changli was homeless as a child and supported herself by working for others. During this period, she began receiving letters from a writer who signed himself “Montelli.” His encouragement accompanied her through loneliness and her subsequent studies. The letters arrived every month without fail for more than twenty years, becoming something she relied on and eagerly awaited 10 102.

Changli later raised Jinhsi from childhood. She taught the frail, frequently ill girl reading, writing, spells, and strategy, watching her grow into Jinzhou’s magistrate. Before their disagreement over Montelli’s letters, Jinhsi had never openly defied her 11.

Personality

Changli generally maintains a calm, dignified exterior. Even when eager to meet her mysterious correspondent, she keeps her movements unhurried and her voice steady. Her reluctance to approach Montelli directly reveals uncertainty beneath that composure: she admits that she is not yet ready to meet him 75.

The letters carry profound emotional weight for her. Discovering that Kexi wrote romantic promises to other women leaves her hurt, jealous, and visibly shaken. Nevertheless, she refuses to dismiss the support those letters gave her merely because their author also wrote to others 75 76 78.

She is fiercely protective of Jinhsi. Although their feelings for Kexi put them in conflict, Changli insists that Jinhsi means more to her than anyone. When she later finds her disciple bleeding beside Kexi’s impostor, her restraint gives way to grief and lethal anger 78 141 142.

Invitation to Rinascita

A new letter invites Changli to see the blooming irises at Montelli’s manor. She decides to meet the person behind more than twenty years of correspondence, with Fisalia cooperation talks also providing a reason to visit Rinascita 10.

Jinhsi recognizes the envelope and becomes distressed when Changli calls its sender important to her. Their disagreement escalates when Jinhsi declares that Changli is not allowed to go. Afterward, Changli begins to suspect that her disciple has also received letters from Montelli 10 11.

Christopher’s Mystic Sect Script

In the scripted setting, Changli grew up in Luo City, Central Province, and entered the sect at twelve. As Kexi’s Second Senior Sister, she welcomes him warmly, arranges his room and calming soup, and offers to help with his difficulties 31 32.

When Kexi is sent down the mountain, she helps prepare him for the journey and leaves directions to his supposed home in his pack. She later joins Chisa in defending the sect from Danika, but both are defeated 38 39 59 60.

Discovering the Letter Writer

At Porto-Vino Castle, Changli hides behind a side door while Cantarella receives Kexi and reads his latest love letter aloud. Changli emerges, learns that he also wrote her letters, and confronts him about his conflicting declarations of devotion 75.

Kexi admits writing to Jinhsi as well and argues that his feelings for every recipient are sincere. Changli rejects this explanation, holds Blazing Brilliance to his neck, and demands that he choose between her, Cantarella, and Jinhsi. She eventually grants him more time 76 77.

After he leaves, Changli refuses Cantarella’s suggestion that she withdraw. She maintains that the letters’ importance has not diminished and agrees to seek his answer at the birthday banquet 78.

Birthday Banquet

Changli arrives seeking the promised answer. When Jinhsi asks whether she truly accepts Kexi having other women, Changli explicitly denies ever saying so, exposing Kexi’s attempt to use her supposed approval to persuade his disciple 132 133.

The confrontation becomes a contest over a marriage alliance. Changli offers Carlotta a high-ranking Huanglong appointment, then raises her offer with the Ministry’s authorization token after Jinhsi proposes a fifty-year trade agreement 135 136.

Jinhsi’s Injury and Kexi’s Escape

During the banquet chaos, Scar delays Changli while Christopher sends a Kexi lookalike to stab Jinhsi. Changli arrives to find the impostor beside her wounded disciple and mistakes him for the real Kexi 140 141.

She pursues Kexi with lethal sword strikes and brings him to Jinhsi when he protests his innocence. Kexi identifies Christopher’s deception, freezes time, and synchronizes with Changli through the Tacet Mark on her chest before escaping in a crimson mech 142.

Changli accepts the three-day deadline for an explanation and orders Sanhua to take Jinhsi back. Later, she hears Kexi speaking inside the recovering Jinhsi’s room and pauses before opening the door 143 167.
