Chapter Summaries

Chang Wei woke in the world of Prototype after the Blacklight Virus entered his body, and a Super Virus System helped him fuse with it. After discovering his new strength and ability to devour infected for Gene Points, he began hunting during the outbreak, until Black Watch soldiers shot him in the head.

• Chang Wei found himself in a foreign city and saw Alex Mercer smash a test tube, whose glass and liquid entered Chang Wei's left eye.
• The Blacklight Virus transformed Chang Wei, and the Super Virus System explained that he could fuse and optimize viruses using Gene Points.
• Chang Wei emerged from an alley to find the city overrun with infected and killed one with a single punch before devouring it for 10 Gene Points.
• Chang Wei became excited by his newfound power and began slaughtering infected, drawing the attention of Black Watch soldiers.
• A Black Watch soldier shot Chang Wei in the head, but his brain tissue quickly repaired itself.

Chang Wei evolved the Blacklight Virus into the Four-armed Hegemon Form, gaining immense strength and learning to control his extra arms. After testing the form, he considered ways to accelerate the infection and obtain Gene Points, but restrained himself from attacking Black Watch soldiers.

• Chang Wei hid in a convenience store, killed an infected, and used Gene Points to evolve the Blacklight Virus into the Four-armed Hegemon Form.

Chang Wei acquired genes from Electric Eels and birds at a pet store, then spotted Alex Mercer being pursued by Hunters. He watched Mercer lead the Hunters into a grove and fight them, leaving Chang Wei to observe Mercer’s combat skills from the sidelines.

• Chang Wei reasoned that his evolution needed genetic material and chose an Electric Eel’s electrical abilities as a potential enhancement.
• Chang Wei bought Electric Eels and birds, ate them, and gained new genes and Gene Points.
• Chang Wei saw Alex Mercer running across skyscrapers with several Hunters in pursuit.
• Mercer lured the Hunters into a grove to keep the fight away from civilians and used his claws against them.
• Chang Wei secretly watched Mercer fight the Hunters and noted how experienced he seemed.

Chang Wei transformed into his Four-armed Hegemon Form and slaughtered Hunters for their Gene Points while Mercer watched in astonishment. After killing several, Chang Wei and Mercer pursued the last two Hunters as they tried to flee.

• Chang Wei transformed into his Four-armed Hegemon Form, punched one Hunter through several trees, and tore another apart, gaining 500 Gene Points.
• Chang Wei crushed a second Hunter and made the remaining three Hunters wary of him.
• Chang Wei pinned all three Hunters, wrenched one Hunter’s head off, and absorbed its corpse.

Meanwhile, Alex Mercer investigated Elizabeth Greene with help from Karen Parker and Diana, and Chang Wei ended the chapter enjoying his first flight above the city.

• Chang Wei found a second infected zone, hunted infected for Gene Points, and used a Hunter to test his Ten Thousand Volt Current.
• Chang Wei's electricity paralyzed and scorched the Hunter, which began recovering after he stopped his attack.
• Alex Mercer investigated Elizabeth Greene and found his girlfriend Karen Parker, who suspected that something was wrong with him.
• With Karen Parker and Diana's help, Alex Mercer found information about Elizabeth Greene.
• Chang Wei completed his third evolution and gained enormous Bat Wings that let him fly for over an hour at an average speed of two hundred kilometers per hour.
• Chang Wei took off without a running start, flew to the top of a skyscraper, and reveled in the sensation of flying.

Chang Wei searched Manhattan for Elizabeth Greene and the Redlight Virus while building his strength, then decided to provoke Black Watch. After he wiped out a squad of soldiers, infected broke through their line as two helicopters arrived.

• Chang Wei noticed the infected zones and Blacklight Virus were growing denser, and suspected Mercer had found Elizabeth Greene.
• Chang Wei learned that the military had identified him as “B Prototype” and that Elizabeth Greene had escaped, but he found no clues to her location.
• Chang Wei reflected on his strength and decided to make trouble by attacking Black Watch soldiers.
• Chang Wei hurled a sedan at five Black Watch soldiers, then used their weapons to kill the remaining soldiers with precise gunfire.
• The infected broke through the defensive line as two helicopters arrived.

Chang Wei destroyed two Black Watch helicopters and used the resulting outbreak to gather infected while pursuing an evolution that could spread the infection faster. He evolved a Blacklight Virus Subbody, tested it on an infected, and watched it enhance the host with armored defenses and more powerful blades.

• Chang Wei disguised himself as an infected, but Black Watch helicopters killed him and nearby civilians before he retaliated by destroying both helicopters.
• Chang Wei let the infected overrun the defensive line, then began harvesting them and considered spreading the infection beyond Manhattan Island.

Chang Wei tested an Infected organism he controlled, then used a Sub-body to infect and strengthen a Hunter before sending it to create more Infected. As Chang Wei searched for Elizabeth Greene, Alex Mercer learned he had appeared and became eager to confront him.

• Chang Wei found that his controlled Infected organism easily defeated ordinary infected but was eventually killed by a Hunter.
• Chang Wei shocked the Hunter with electricity and ordered a Sub-body to crawl from the dead organism and infect it.
• The Sub-body transformed the Hunter into a more powerful Armored Hunter, which Chang Wei sent out to create more Infected.
• Chang Wei set out to find Elizabeth Greene, unaware that Alex Mercer was also searching for him after Greene escaped.
• Mercer's sister told him Chang Wei had appeared and was suspected of attacking Black Watch in the infected zone.

Chang Wei tracked Elizabeth Greene to the Stadium, where the infected interior had become a Core Hive, and prepared to harvest her Gene Points. He smashed into the hive in his evolved Four-armed Hegemon Form and began tearing through its defenses.

• Alex Mercer decided to seek out Chang Wei for an explanation, unaware that Chang Wei had no safehouse and was searching the infected zone for Elizabeth Greene.
• Chang Wei found signs of infection at the Stadium and realized he had located Elizabeth Greene's lair.
• Chang Wei's ten Predator Sub-bodies had spread his Super Blacklight Virus, sparking battles among infected creatures, Marines, and Black Watch soldiers.
• Chang Wei transformed into his evolved Four-armed Hegemon Form and shattered the Core Hive's shell with one punch.
• Chang Wei charged inside, shouted for Elizabeth Greene, and tore through the hive while his Blacklight Virus absorbed its creatures for Gene Points.

Chang Wei incapacitated Elizabeth Greene with an electric attack and forcibly absorbed her, gaining Gene Points as the Blacklight Virus stirred within him. He ordered the system to evolve the virus, then fought the Hunters and Hunter Leader that attacked him.

• Elizabeth Greene appeared and sensed that Chang Wei was both her child and a Superior.
• Chang Wei struck Elizabeth with a 100,000-volt Electric Energy Surge, then restrained her and pierced her abdomen with his Absorption Stinger Tail.
• Elizabeth begged Chang Wei to spare her, but he absorbed her and gained Gene Points.
• Chang Wei ordered the system to evolve the Blacklight Virus’s reproductive, splitting, and Hunter-producing abilities.
• The Hunters charged Chang Wei, who smashed through them and caved in the Hunter Leader’s head with a punch.
• Chang Wei pierced the Hunter Leader with his Absorption Stinger Tail and began draining it.

Chang Wei emerged from the destroyed Core Hive after unlocking new Blacklight Virus forms and abilities by absorbing Elizabeth Greene. He tested his ability to create life from his blood, producing a Hunter, and discovered that even a small amount of his tissue could regenerate him.

• Chang Wei's Myriad Tendrils pierced through the Core Hive's life forms and Blacklight creatures, destroying the hive while his evolved Armor Form protected him.
• Chang Wei assessed his new electrical abilities, including Electric Whip Tendrils, and his Bio-missile, acid, invisibility, and Six-Blade Style forms.
• Chang Wei concluded that his evolved abilities could overpower Alex Mercer if they met.
• Chang Wei dropped a blood sample and used his splitting and reproduction ability to grow a Hunter from it.

Chang Wei tested his Blacklight combat units and ordered a Four-armed Hunter to create Degenerate Hunters and find Alex Mercer. At Black Watch headquarters, General Peter Randall questioned the recent heavy casualties among the Marines and Black Watch soldiers.

• Chang Wei tested his Four-armed Hunter against ordinary Hunters and Black Watch soldiers, and it tore through its opponents with ease.
• Chang Wei explained that Degenerate Hunters could spread the virus without further degradation and could be produced cheaply in large numbers.
• Chang Wei reviewed the Death Hunter and complete Super Hunter, deciding the latter was not useful to him.
• Chang Wei ordered the Four-armed Hunter to create Degenerate Hunters and find Alex Mercer.

Black Watch sent Captain Robert and its Super Soldiers after the Degenerate Hunters, but the Four-armed Hunter turned the fight against them. Chang Wei then headed for the bridge sealing off Manhattan Island to break through the blockade.

• Captain Robert told General Randall that swift, coordinated Degenerate Hunters had inflicted heavy casualties on Black Watch.
• General Randall ordered Captain Robert to lead the Super Soldiers against the new monsters.
• The Super Soldiers initially inflicted growing casualties on the Degenerate Hunters, drawing the Four-armed Hunter's attention.
• Chang Wei decided to head to the bridge where Black Watch had sealed off Manhattan Island and break through the blockade.
• The Four-armed Hunter ambushed the Super Soldiers with hundreds of Degenerate Hunters and crippled them, wiping out Black Watch's newly developed force.

Chang Wei established a Blacklight Nest on Manhattan and began creating an invisible Hunter called Anubis while Alex Mercer searched for him. After defeating Hydra, Alex encountered Chang Wei’s Hunters and fought a Four-armed Hunter.

• Chang Wei found Manhattan’s bridges and surrounding waters sealed by armed forces, so he created a Nest inside a building.
• Chang Wei ordered Four-armed Hunters to gather nutrients and designed Anubis, an invisible Hunter that the Nest would produce.
• Alex Mercer gave up searching for Chang Wei and focused on clearing infected, unaware that Black Watch planned to use a nuclear bomb on Manhattan.
• After Alex defeated Hydra, a Degenerate Hunter attacked him, and he recognized a Four-armed Hunter as possibly connected to Chang Wei.
• Alex activated Armor Form and Mace Form, then collided head-on with the Four-armed Hunter.

Chang Wei tracked down Alex Mercer after the Four-armed Hunter transmitted his location and struck him with a supersonic attack. Alex regenerated from the impact and launched a surprise attack on Chang Wei, leaving their fight unresolved.

• Alex Mercer devoured the Four-armed Hunter after overpowering it with Blacklight Virus tendrils, but it sent Chang Wei a signal before it died.
• Chang Wei received the signal through his Pheromone ability while his Anubis and Four-armed Hunters crossed the bridge into the outside world.

When Alex tried to leave, Chang Wei revealed he had captured Dana and trapped them both in a black-and-red space, forcing a fight to the death.

• Chang Wei let Alex’s Grave Spike Assassination pierce him, then walked free without injury.
• Chang Wei grabbed Alex’s tentacle and corroded it with a powerful mixed acid designed to prey on the Blacklight Virus.
• Chang Wei claimed his cells and blood were made of predatory digestive fluid that Alex could not absorb, frightening Alex into considering copying his evolutionary method.
• Alex tried to leave, but Chang Wei revealed that Hunters had tracked him and that Dana was in his hands.
• Chang Wei spread the Blacklight Virus into a black-and-red space and challenged Alex to a fight from which only one of them would leave alive.

Chang Wei trapped Alex in Black Coffin and overwhelmed him with his Six-Blade Style, draining Alex’s Blacklight Virus while resisting his attacks. Alex unleashed Myriad Tentacles: End All, filling the unbreakable prison and binding Chang Wei, but the tendrils were being corroded and replaced as the fight continued.

• Chang Wei used Black Coffin to trap Alex and explained that he had fused with the Blacklight Virus rather than been transformed by it.
• Alex charged Chang Wei, who used his Six-Blade Style to cut Alex apart with six supersonic blades.
• Chang Wei absorbed Alex’s severed pieces and ignored his attacks while Alex’s energy and Blacklight Virus dwindled.
• Alex discovered that Chang Wei’s Blacklight Virus resisted absorption and that strong acid was corroding his own virus.
• Alex unleashed Myriad Tentacles: End All, filling Black Coffin and binding Chang Wei, while the tendrils corroded and were replaced.

Chang Wei absorbed Alex and gained his abilities, then turned his attention to The Jester, whom Black Watch believed might be the ultimate form of life. As Manhattan fell and Randall prepared a nuclear strike, Chang Wei pursued the child as a possible key to understanding what came next.

Chang Wei confronted General Randall to learn where Jason Greene was being held, while reflecting on the disputed role of non-coding DNA. Randall revealed that a nuclear bomb had been activated, but Chang Wei was unconcerned and threatened to feed him to Hunter unless he answered.
