Background / History
Plant Origins
Before becoming human, Jiang Shuyue learned about people through television and tea farmers. Despite her ten thousand years of cultivation, ordinary human emotions remain unfamiliar to her. When the Zhou family treats her kindly, she cannot understand why happiness also makes her want to cry 7 10.
Her plant experiences continue to shape her behavior. She seeks sunlight to “photosynthesize,” regards eating pigeons as revenge for their droppings, and resents birds that sharpened their beaks on her while she could not move 10.
The Identity She Inherits
The human Jiang Shuyue is the biological daughter of Jiang An and Liu Rulan, also called Madam Jiang. According to the system, Jiang An swapped her with his mistress’s child, Jiang Liuli, after blaming Shuyue for his career setbacks. He intended to have Shuyue killed, but the person entrusted with disposing of her spared her because he thought she could eventually be sold 13 15.
By the confrontation over her belongings, Shuyue has been back in the Jiang household for only three months. She describes living so poorly that she grew vegetables in her courtyard, while Liuli acquired eighteen of her valuable possessions. Her allowance was withheld, her dowry was apparently plundered, and she endured prolonged kneeling punishments 14 16 20.
Liuli was originally supposed to marry Zhou Yunshen but refused because she feared his temper and did not want to become a stepmother. Jiang Shuyue was sent in her place 16.
Appearance
Jiang Shuyue is repeatedly described as beautiful, though thin and somewhat bony. Her natural tea fragrance attracts both her husband and stepdaughter 2 7 12 29.
- Fair skin: Zhou Yunshen notices that her hands would easily show marks from being struck 10.
- Small frame: Her husband doubts she can safely climb the residence’s two-meter wall 37.
- Green tea scent: Zhou Luming nuzzles her arm to inhale it; Zhou Yunshen enjoys its combination with floral incense 7 12.
- Lavish clothing and jewelry after marriage: Wears expensive shu brocade with Su Embroidery and a gold hairpin set with red gemstones 20.
- Abundant rings and bracelets: At one outing, eight fingers carry large gemstone or jade rings, with bracelets on both wrists 34.
Personality
Jiang Shuyue’s demure public manner contrasts sharply with her profane, flirtatious inner commentary. She enthusiastically admires beautiful people, eats without restraint when permitted, and treats almost every gathering as an opportunity to hear gossip. Her appetite for spectacle can overwhelm her caution: during a teahouse fight, she insists on rushing to the “front lines” despite warnings 2 28 29 35.
Her social inexperience does not prevent her from being calculating. She readily manufactures tears, performs helplessness, and turns an opponent’s accusations back on them. Against Liuli, she deliberately copies the same innocent-victim tactics that once made the original Shuyue defenseless 13 19 20 40.
Her affection becomes increasingly genuine. Initially fascinated by the Zhou children as sources of gossip, she resolves to prevent the suffering that would turn them into villains. She also earns points to strengthen Jiang Chen and plans an expensive cure for Prince Huai 7 18 32.
That compassion is selective. She initially declines to warn her mother directly about Qin Wanru’s future poisoning scheme, and she takes pleasure in humiliating Liuli. Her revenge nevertheless also serves practical goals: exposing manipulation, protecting her family, and securing system rewards 16 20 39 40.
Abilities & Skills
Audible Inner Voice
Her supposedly private thoughts—and the system conversations accompanying them—can be heard by eligible people nearby. Jiang Shuyue does not realize this, even after Jiang Wujie questions something she has only thought 19 28.
- Eligibility: People harboring ill intentions and those in the enemy camp cannot hear her thoughts 28.
- Range: The emperor, Prince Huai, and Zhou Yunshen establish reliable reception within three hundred meters 28.
- Applications: Reveals conspiracies, alerts potential victims, and exposes information she never says aloud 18 23 27 46.
- Unintended consequences: Her romantic fantasies and intimate complaints are also broadcast to relatives, officials, and royalty 26 27.
- Political value: The three powerful listeners privately agree that she is Great Zhou’s most precious treasure 28.
System-Assisted Foreknowledge
Jiang Shuyue remembers parts of the original novel, while the system supplies hidden histories, motives, and future outcomes. Their knowledge allows characters to act before predicted tragedies occur 4 18 23 27.
- Identifies Li Qiner’s concealed crimes and helps expose her pregnancy 1 4.
- Reveals Jiang An and Qin Wanru’s plans to poison Madam Jiang and ruin her sons 18.
- Exposes Yu Wenzhong and Chen Tingting’s plot against Lin Shuangshuang 23.
- Reveals the actual culprit behind Prince Huai’s poisoning 27.
- Warns that Meng Tian’s new clothing has been drugged to produce a dangerous-looking rash 46.
- Limit: The future can diverge from the original plot; Chaohua’s engagement to Shen Zhiyi changes the expected course of her life 30.
Green Tea Points
The system rewards her for successful “green tea” performances: feigned sweetness, emotional manipulation, and defeating other outwardly innocent schemers. Taking down such opponents can earn bonus points 19 20 21.
| Milestone | Chapter | Result |
|---|---|---|

Social Manipulation
Jiang Shuyue uses exaggerated fragility and public etiquette to force opponents into unfavorable positions 13 40 44 47.
- Feigned tears: Makes Liuli’s accusations expose the Jiang household’s mistreatment instead 13 19.
- Staged accidents: Engineers the breaking of earrings and blames Liuli; later collapses before Chen Furong actually touches her 20 44.
- Threatened imperial consequences: Claims a broken hairpin is an imperial gift and persuades Liuli to kneel until a decree arrives, though she never intends to seek one 40.
- Strategic kinship: Becomes Consort Shu’s sworn sister and includes Liuli, making Liuli the Fourth Prince’s “second aunt” and obstructing his marriage plans 47 48.
- Use of protection: Secures Zhou Yunshen’s support before the palace banquet and invokes the consequences of harming his wife 41 47.
Practical Capabilities and Limits
- Quick reactions: Catches Li Qiner before her staged faint can prevent a medical examination 4.
- Direct retaliation: Grapples with Zhao Lushuang and knocks Ji Ruhua unconscious with a thrown teacup 35 42.
- Danger recognition: Identifies the fragrance in Consort Xian’s palace as a miscarriage-inducing mixture 30.
- Weak domestic and literary skills: Struggles with sewing, writes absurd poetry, and sings off-key despite considerable confidence 11 12.
- Unproven feats: Proposes smashing a boulder on her chest but admits she has never practiced it; the performance is stopped before it occurs 47.
- Limited system assistance: The system cannot administer electric shocks and refuses to intervene during her marital encounters 22 26.
