| Sequence 9: Seer | 166 | Recalled retrospectively: while still a Seer in Tingen, Klein trapped and killed a tuxedo-clad Clown. |
| Sequence 8: Clown | 105 | The Curse of Knowledge identifies him as a Clown at the Eye of Wisdom’s gathering. His bodily control helps him conceal reactions while impersonating a god 137. |
| Sequence 7: Magician | 144 166 347 | Klein later recalls that he brought Fors above the gray fog on the day he advanced to Magician. He is explicitly confirmed as Sequence 7 afterward. |
| Sequence 7: Fully digested | 262 | Completely digested the Magician potion less than half a year after transmigrating. Prepared to purchase the remaining requirements for Faceless 263. |
| Sequence 6: Faceless | 265 266 | Advanced after exhausting his savings. Gains facial transformation and deeper control over the gray fog, including clearer observation of members’ emotional states 280. |
| Sequence 6: Marionettist ingredient secured | 411 414 431 | Arranges for Rosago’s characteristic to be purified through Fors’s friend. Receives the All-Black Eye with its corruption removed, while the lower-Sequence characteristics go to Lorry. This is preparation for advancement, not confirmation of reaching Sequence 5. |
| Sequence 6: Approaching complete digestion | 453 | Estimates that two or three more acting experiences of comparable intensity will completely digest Faceless. Plans to finish the remaining acting while traveling to search for mermaids. |
| Sequence 6: Continued confirmation and future-pathway planning | 518 519 | Explicitly identifies himself as only Sequence 6 while considering how to respond to Fors’s presentation of the Marionette Doll. Considers investigating an adjacent pathway if obtaining the Sequence 4 Seer formula proves difficult after advancing to Marionettist. Neither advancement nor a pathway change is confirmed. |
| Sequence 6: Clarification of personal identity | 520 | Audrey’s explanation of the relationship between spirit and body helps him conclude that he remains himself despite incorporating Klein Moretti’s memories and emotions. He treats Klein Moretti as an identity with genuine family ties, comparable in principle to his other identities. No accompanying Sequence advancement or complete potion digestion is stated. |
Background / History
Klein is a transmigrator who reaches the point of fully digesting his Sequence 7 potion less than half a year after arriving in this world. His experiences in Tingen—and particularly his desire to avenge his captain—are important motivations behind his advancement through the Sequences 94 262.
Lorry knows Klein as the protagonist of the original Lord of the Mysteries. Believing his growth indispensable to the future struggle against the Outer Deities, Lorry initially avoids joining the Tarot Club or approaching him directly. Even when seeking divination, he prefers other practitioners to risking interference with Klein’s development 3 4 75.
Backlund Detective Career
Operating as Sherlock Moriarty, Klein lives at 15 Minsk Street and takes private commissions while becoming involved in Beyonder affairs. His entanglement with the Intis ambassador’s plot leads him to attend the Eye of Wisdom’s gathering, where Lorry recognizes him 77 178.
Lorry later buys two potion formulas from Klein for a combined 600 pounds, intending to support the future Fool financially. The transaction unsettles Lorry because his own intervention reproduces the result he remembers from the original novel 105 106.
Klein also investigates the recent serial murders with friends. During this investigation, Bernadette warns him against using a cursed key unnecessarily 140.
Lanevus and the Black Emperor Affair
Klein pursues revenge against Lanevus but initially lacks the strength to confront the forces protecting him alone. Lorry knows the anticipated sequence of events: the Church of the Evernight Goddess attacks Lanevus’s protectors, while Klein waits in the sewers to intercept him. Lorry inserts his own hunt into this interval 120 122.
At Capim’s villa, Klein’s actions become associated with the name Black Emperor. He is bewildered when newspaper reports also credit him with emptying a safe and leaving a Lovers card—details he did not arrange 173 178.
His later divination reveals another man taking Capim’s valuables and declaring, “You get the nickname, I get the pounds.” Klein eventually identifies this supposed Gentleman Thief as the writer Raven, also known as Lorry 242 251.
Klein initially incorporates the unidentified man into the Fool’s supposed network of Blessed to explain the Tarot Club’s apparent involvement. After Fors relays Lorry’s willingness to cooperate, Klein performs further divinations and confirms that neither she nor her friend bears the club ill will. He decides to observe rather than take action, interpreting Lorry’s cooperation as a possible tacit understanding between intelligent people 185 253 254.
Backlund Catastrophes
Klein serves as an intermediary when Fors reports an attempted evil-god descent, passing her prayer to Audrey so that the information can reach the Church of the Evernight Goddess’s higher ranks. He subsequently takes pride in the Tarot Club’s contribution to stopping the catastrophe 205 217.
When Fors later exposes the conspiracy involving the royal family, the Demoness Sect, the Aurora Order, Ince Zangwill, and Sealed Artifact 0-08, Klein recognizes the danger of acting on that knowledge. Nevertheless, he resolves to help both to oppose Ince and to save innocent lives 252.
During the Great Smog crisis, Klein escapes the underground ruins at Azik’s urging and uses misdirection and Flaming Jump to evade guards. He then disrupts Mr. A’s ritual by throwing the Master Key into the altar, losing the item in the process 256 262.
Reporting the intelligence to the Machinery Hivemind leaves him expecting to abandon Sherlock Moriarty’s identity rather than face rigorous questioning. After advancing to Faceless, he visits the graves of Old Kohler, Liv, and Freya, adding names, epitaphs, and offerings 262 265 266.
Gehrman Sparrow and the Pirate Hunt
With Sharron’s help, Klein obtains legal documents for Gehrman Sparrow. Around the same time, Azik gives him Creeping Hunger after recovering in the Underworld 278.
As Gehrman, Klein works with Danitz and accepts “Flower Bow Tie” Jodson as a mobile reserve for their operation against Steel’s group. He verifies that Jodson’s summoning charm has tracking capabilities rather than accepting its claims untested 295 296.
During the fighting, Lorry steals the Evil Spirit Possession ability affecting Klein, restoring his control over his body. Afterward, Klein questions Scowal’s spirit about his savings and helps allocate the recovered items and bounties 300 304 305.
Klein recognizes that Danitz’s refusal to abandon the fight helped prevent a potentially fatal outcome. He also becomes increasingly suspicious of Jodson’s concealed strength: although Danitz regards the third mate as weak, Jodson kills the Sequence 5 Wraith “Bonebreaker” Sebas. Klein connects Jodson’s theft of Evil Spirit Possession with the Marauder pathway and concludes that he has been deliberately keeping a low profile 303 305 308 309.
Kalvetua and the Sea God Scepter
A purported Roselle diary entry informs Klein that the injured Sea God Kalvetua could provide valuable materials, a demigod-level artifact, and an opportunity to digest potions by impersonating it. The account is later identified as a forged diary page used to draw his interest 279 297.
Following Azik’s advice, Klein attempts to locate Kalvetua through a sacrifice. The attempt nearly pulls him through the sacrificial doorway. After confirming the Sea God’s death and divining that exploration carries manageable danger, he enters its hiding place in Spirit Body form 321 322 323.
His defensive use of an item carrying the True Creator’s mental corruption causes the already dying Kalvetua to perish ahead of time. In the ruins, Klein uses the Black Emperor card’s standing to frighten away a Spirit World guardian, then defeats the old priest harboring Kalvetua’s residual psyche with Holy Light Descent 297 323.
There, Lorry speaks from another dimension while posing as an ancient existence. He confirms that Fool is the name at the top of Klein’s pathway, then offers Kalvetua’s artifact in return for three future tasks that must remain within Klein’s abilities and principles 324.
Klein accepts the artifact and names it the Sea God Scepter. He refuses to risk payment involving blood or a soul imprint, while Lorry demands no mystical contract and says he will know when Klein reaches Sequence 2 325.
The simplest promised task requires Klein to become a Sequence 2 Miracle Invoker, a level he is not yet confident of reaching. Klein speculates that his benefactor may be a surviving high-ranking elf, possibly “Calamity” Cohinem, seeking eventual restoration. This is his conjecture rather than the benefactor’s true identity 325.
Lorry’s actual plan for the first favor is to recover the Lieutenant Colonel’s spirit from the Curse of Knowledge and have Klein assist with his resurrection after becoming a Miracle Invoker. The other two favors are not yet settled, although Lorry anticipates that one will probably involve an Attendant of Mysteries or Worm of Time characteristic. These are Lorry’s plans, not knowledge Klein is shown possessing 326.
At a later Tarot Club meeting, Klein exploits the members’ interpretations of Kalvetua’s death to reinforce the Fool’s status. He describes the ancient being as an old friend and the scepter as a thank-you gift, leading Alger and others to infer cooperation between two ancient gods 353.
The obligation continues to trouble him. When the club later discusses a demigod-level ghost ship, Klein compares such a treasure with his own Sea God Scepter and privately hopes that the ancient existence will not make his three favors too difficult 519.
Meeting Raven in Bayam
When Klein meets Fors and Raven together in Bayam, he introduces himself as Gehrman Sparrow. His attempts to question Raven about his supposed faith in the Fool produce evasive answers and a claim that Raven shares a secret with the deity—much to Klein’s private irritation 391 392.
Fors then repeatedly defeats him at a cup-and-ball trick. Klein asks permission to use divination and ultimately receives a Backlund Bank bearer cheque, leaving him delighted by her generosity 392 393.
The meeting follows Fors’s offer of a 500-pound reward for seeing through her trick. Klein accepts after she proposes an alternative reward involving the restoration of Beyonder characteristics, with a locator and disguise item arranged for their real-world encounter 387.
Purifying the Marionettist Characteristic
Seeking a Mystical Item capable of stealing Beyonder abilities, Klein consults Arrodes through the Wireless Telegraph. The mirror identifies Fors among the possible sources, surprising him because she is then only a Trickmaster. He prioritizes contacting her rather than attempting to obtain an item from the Chanis Gate in Tingen 406 407.
Through Fors, Klein chooses a method of obtaining the needed Marionettist characteristic without paying cash and also acquires a separate method for shattering Beyonder characteristics. He agrees to provide her friend with one future service, retaining the right to refuse a task beyond his abilities or one he considers too dangerous 411.
The shattering method involves invoking Leodero in Ancient Hermes. Fors warns that doing so can summon an indiscriminate Angel-level attack, and subsequently identifies the name as that of the Lord of Storms. Klein is alarmed by both the danger and the implications of learning a true god’s name 411 412.
Lorry receives the Seer, Clown, Magician, and Faceless characteristics separated from Rosago’s legacy. Klein receives the Marionettist characteristic with its mental corruption removed in less than a day. He notes that a slower return would have forced the World to miss the next Tarot Club gathering 414 431.
Leonard’s Parasitism and Tarot Club Affairs
Arrodes informs Klein that an Angel of the Zoroast Family is parasitizing Leonard Mitchell. Klein obtains Leonard’s address and arranges surveillance through Emlyn, offering 200 pounds for visits to Williams Street every two or three days and reports of anything unusual 387 407.
After learning from Cattleya that high-ranking Marauders can create avatars through Worms of Time, Klein becomes concerned that Fors herself might have been parasitized. He secretly prepares the Sea God Scepter, checks her with Spirit Vision and the gray fog’s power, and performs divination. Only after confirming that she has not been parasitized does he relax 430.
Klein then commissions Fors to ask her friend how to distinguish Shallow Level Parasitism from Deep-Level Parasitism, and whether a deeply parasitized victim can be saved. He considers reporting Leonard’s situation to the Church through Judgment if necessary, using the host’s ignorance to avoid alerting the Parasite 430 431.
Klein admits Xio to the Tarot Club as Judgment. During her selection of a code name, he removes the Lovers card from the available deck and explains that it belongs to one of his Blessed. He later enjoys observing the reactions between Judgment and the club’s existing members, while taking Fors’s continued discretion as further proof of her trustworthiness 418 428.
Oravi Acting and the Jodson Hypothesis
On Oravi Island, Klein operates as Sinbad Volent and undertakes volunteer work as part of digesting Faceless, including cleaning filthy washrooms while wearing protective clothing and a large face mask procured through Emlyn. He continues handling Tarot Club prayers alongside this work 450.
His advancement plans are to continue acting until Faceless is nearly digested, then seek passage with Alger or, preferably, Cattleya to search for mermaids. After another demanding acting experience, he estimates that two or three comparable experiences will finish the potion and decides the remaining digestion can occur during the journey 431 453.
While dining under the Sinbad identity, Klein reads reports that Jodson has defeated the King of Immortality and damaged the Death Announcer, with his bounty rising to 120,000 pounds. Initially skeptical, he reconsiders after hearing that Jodson used an exceptionally powerful Mystical Item. Comparing the required spirituality with his own limited use of the Sea God Scepter, Klein suspects that Jodson may actually be High Sequence 454.
Remembering that high-ranking Marauders can create avatars, Klein links Jodson’s concealed strength and familiar manner to Raven. He forms the hypothesis that Jodson and Lorry are the same person, but has not confirmed it in the supplied events. He plans to observe Fors’s and Judgment’s reactions when the subject arises at the Tarot Club, and to warn Fors if necessary 454 455.
His recollection of the two men’s overlapping bearing, small gestures, and other characteristics strengthens this hypothesis. He considers whether his Faceless abilities had allowed him to notice similarities that he previously dismissed as shared traits of the Marauder pathway 455.
Lending the Black Emperor Card
While resting in a volunteers’ lounge, Klein receives a prayer from Fors asking the World to honor their previous agreement and help with a task. The ensuing arrangement involves lending out his Black Emperor card 485 486.
After divination gives a strongly affirmative result, Klein chooses a Card of Blasphemy as compensation for the loan. Through the World dummy, he explicitly cites Fors’s consistently demonstrated credibility and authorizes her to proceed with the bestowal ritual. Lorry subsequently receives the Black Emperor card through the lady Messenger and memorizes its potion formulas 486.
The Marionette Doll and Further Advancement Plans
When Fors presents the Marionette Doll at the Tarot Club, Klein recognizes its abilities as those of an item made from a Marionettist characteristic. He suspects that her friend has identified his Seer pathway, despite his never openly revealing it at a gathering. He reasons that his earlier ingredient requests could have exposed the information and that a Marauder demigod might know formulas from an adjacent pathway 518.
Klein also recognizes Fors’s presentation as a possible attempt to show off rather than sincerely sell the gift. He considers either punishing her immediately or delaying his response to her next full-moon prayer. However, he notes that her conduct is not overtly improper, that an accusation based only on his guess would be arbitrary, and that he is only Sequence 6 while her backer is believed to be a demigod. These remain contemplated responses; no punishment is shown, and the later gathering continues without one 518 520.
During the subsequent discussion, Klein learns that Jodson has left the Golden Dream and declared himself King of the Curtain. Reports describe a clash with Nast over a legendary ghost ship from the Solomon Empire, with Nast apparently coming off slightly worse. Fors confirms that Jodson originally joined the Golden Dream to search for treasure 519.
Connecting Fors’s material requests with preparations for demigod advancement, Klein wonders whether her friend is cultivating companions, subordinates, or avatars. Leonard’s situation makes him consider the possibility that a parasitized host can continue advancing, which would mean that several demigods could eventually stand behind Fors. He also considers asking Azik to confirm the adjacency of the Seer, Apprentice, and Marauder pathways, and whether an adjacent pathway might offer an alternative if the Sequence 4 Seer formula proves difficult to obtain after his advancement to Marionettist 519.
Understanding His Own Identity
Audrey’s account of experiments concerning the relationship between spirit and body prompts Klein to reconsider his status as a transmigrator. He observes that his tastes and habitual movements often reflect his previous life rather than his predecessor’s memories, but wonders why his appearance and height have not changed 520.
He hesitates to have the World ask a question that might conflict with Gehrman Sparrow’s persona. Fors independently asks the same question, allowing him to hear Audrey’s explanation that the transformation concerns the body’s internal attunement rather than its external appearance. Fors summarizes the distinction as the mask being less important than the person beneath it 520.
Klein concludes that he remains himself, having incorporated Klein Moretti’s memories and emotions rather than ceased to possess his own identity. He comes to regard Klein Moretti as an identity comparable to Gehrman Sparrow, but one carrying genuine connections to an older brother and a younger sister. This is a development in his understanding of himself, not a documented Sequence advancement 520.
Appearance
- Gehrman Sparrow appearance: Black hair, brown eyes, and a lean, sharply defined face, usually accompanied by a cold expression 391.
- Clothing: Wears formal clothes while operating as Gehrman 294.
- Changeable features: His Faceless abilities allow him to alter his face; a single appearance does not reliably establish his identity 266.
- Volunteer clothing: While working as Sinbad Volent, wears a fully protective volunteer outfit and a large new-style face mask for sanitation work 450.
Personality
Klein carefully separates his private reactions from his public roles. As the Fool, he maintains an aloof divine manner while inwardly worrying about money, unexpected revelations, and the difficulty of sustaining the performance. As Gehrman Sparrow, he suppresses curiosity when expressing it would conflict with the adventurer’s established persona 137 147 294.
He is cautious rather than blindly opportunistic. Even the prospect of hunting an injured demigod does not make him act without preparation. When offered the Sea God Scepter, he remains alert to hidden costs and refuses to surrender anything that might expose him to lasting mystical danger 279 325.
His concern for ordinary people persists alongside his desire for revenge. Factory conditions leave him and his companions dispirited; he acts against the Backlund conspiracy despite the risks and later personally commemorates victims of the Great Smog 159 252 266.
Money is a recurring source of anxiety and humor. Advancement costs and lost rewards trouble him, while Fors’s wealth and generous support provoke envy and disbelief. He also takes Raven’s cliffhangers and protagonist-killing plots personally enough to attempt mystical investigations of the author 144 179 263 352.
His outward exasperation with companions does not erase his loyalty. He mocks Leonard’s self-proclaimed importance but actively investigates whether he can be saved from parasitism. Similarly, when considering whether Jodson and Lorry are the same man, Klein resolves that even a demigod should not be allowed to mistreat a Tarot Club member 431 455.
Klein enjoys watching the club’s members discover unexpected connections between themselves, but respects confidentiality when necessary. He blocks even his own senses during private conversations and values Fors’s refusal to disclose the Tarot Club to either her close friend or her roommate 280 428.
He remains capable of questioning his own authority and motives. Although irritated by Fors’s apparent display of the Marionette Doll, he recognizes the weakness of declaring her guilty when her outward behavior violates no clear rule. His consideration of punishment also exposes the practical tension between maintaining the Fool’s divine image and his actual Sequence 6 strength 518.
His understanding of identity becomes more integrated after Audrey’s explanation of spirit-body influence. Rather than treating his inherited memories and emotions as proof that he has become someone else, he affirms continuity with his former self while acknowledging the family ties associated with Klein Moretti 520.
Abilities & Skills
Divination
Klein uses several methods to investigate people, assess danger, and verify information 144 243 323.
- Coin divination: Answers statements such as whether a person is alive or an item has tracking functions 242 296.
- Pendulum divination: Tests danger, intentions, and the possible consequences of admitting someone to the Tarot Club 243 323.
- Dream divination: Attempts to identify Raven through his writing 144.
- Binary Ritual Divination: A method Klein devised to improve accuracy and success rates, at the cost of a cumbersome procedure 145.
- Parasitism checks: Uses divination alongside Spirit Vision and the gray fog’s power to confirm that Fors has not been parasitized 430.
- Transaction assessment: Uses pendulum divination to determine whether he should choose a Card of Blasphemy as compensation for lending the Black Emperor card 486.
- Limitations: Strong anti-divination measures repeatedly prevent him from obtaining further information about Lorry. Attempts to investigate the supposed demigod with insufficient information can produce meaningless results 243 251 430.
Clown Bodily Control
The Clown potion grants fine control over expressions and subtle movements, making it essential to his impersonation of a god 137.
- Conceals shock, embarrassment, and amusement during Tarot Club meetings 137 349.
- Supports convincing feigned gastrointestinal distress when he needs an excuse to leave 322.
- Aids concealment while escaping the underground ruins 256.
Flaming Jump
Klein uses Flaming Jump during his escape from the underground ruins 256.
- Wraps a match in spirituality, lights it, and throws it forward before jumping 256.
- Combines the ability with distractions to bypass patrols 256.
Faceless Transformation
Faceless allows Klein to change his features and sustain alternate identities 266 305.
- Alters his face before traveling through Backlund after the catastrophe 266.
- Maintains the Gehrman Sparrow appearance 305 391.
- Uses Faceless observation to make deductions from details such as fresh mud on other travelers’ boots 309.
- Acts under the Sinbad Volent identity without Gehrman’s obligatory cold demeanor, allowing him to converse openly and amicably with a young adventurer 454.
- Pursues further digestion through volunteer work and other demanding acting experiences 431 450 453.
- Recognizes similarities in bearing, characteristics, and small gestures beneath Lorry’s and Jodson’s different appearances, strengthening his hypothesis that they are the same person 455.
- Develops a clearer distinction between his continuing self and his assumed or inherited identities after the club’s discussion of spirit-body influence 520.
Gray Fog Operations
Klein accesses the space above the gray fog by taking four counterclockwise steps. There, he convenes the Tarot Club and conducts divination 144 241.
- Listens to prayers associated with members’ crimson stars and relays messages 205 331.
- Facilitates sacrifice and bestowal rituals for money, ingredients, and artifacts 185 217 331.
- Controls the World dummy as a separate participant 147.
- Blocks members’ senses to permit private conversations 280.
- Operates under spirituality limits; earlier meetings must end before his reserves run out 137 185.
- Gains deeper control after advancing to Faceless, improving his observation of the participants 280.
- Acts as guarantor for transactions; at one point holds 15,000 pounds in gold and cash belonging to an arrangement rather than to himself 431.
- Mobilizes the gray fog’s power and prepares the Sea God Scepter when he suspects a possible threat to a member 430.
- Observes members’ Astral Body emotional colors, including the shared gloom and envy prompted by discussion of a demigod-level ghost ship 519.
Spirit Body Exploration
Klein can summon himself and explore in Spirit Body form 323 324.
- Uses this state to enter Kalvetua’s hiding place 323.
- Relies on being able to end the summoning and return above the gray fog when speaking with the unknown “ancient existence” 324.
- Can hold the Sea God Scepter only briefly in this state 325.
- Uses the Black Emperor card’s high standing to intimidate a Spirit World creature guarding the ruins 323.
Mystical Knowledge and Investigation
Klein combines divination, ordinary observation, informants, and knowledge obtained through the Tarot Club to investigate concealed identities and supernatural threats 251 387 430 454.
- Arrodes consultation: Uses the Wireless Telegraph to question the magic mirror about suitable Mystical Items, Leonard’s location, and the secret of his parasitism 406 407.
- Characteristic purification: Knows the City of Silver’s methods for removing mental corruption, including shattering a characteristic and allowing it to reform after the corruption dissipates 385.
- Leodero invocation: Learns that speaking the Lord of Storms’ true name in Ancient Hermes can call down an indiscriminate Angel-level attack. Acquires the information as a prospective means of shattering Beyonder characteristics, not as an innate ability 411 412.
- Avatar deduction: Uses Cattleya’s explanation of Marauder avatars, reports of Jodson’s strength, and his own encounters with both men to hypothesize that Jodson and Lorry are one person 430 454.
- Mystical Item identification: Recognizes the Marionette Doll’s abilities as corresponding to a Marionettist characteristic and considers how his own ingredient requests could have exposed his pathway 518.
- Adjacent-pathway research: Recalls Roselle’s account connecting Seer, Apprentice, and Marauder as adjacent pathways. Plans to consult Azik and considers the latter two as possible alternatives if his future Sequence 4 formula proves difficult to obtain; no switch is documented 519.
- Spirit-body theory: Learns from Audrey’s explanation that a spirit can bring a physical body into internal attunement without changing its appearance or height. Applies this understanding to his own transmigration and personal identity 520.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Creeping Hunger — Glove given to him by Azik. Klein removes its Faceless characteristic and arranges to sell it through the Tarot Club. He later uses the glove during the exploration of Kalvetua’s ruins and feeds it after defeating the old priest 278 280 323.
- Sea God Scepter — Demigod-level artifact obtained from Lorry for three future favors. Its divine aura evokes the sea and storms, and Klein uses it while replacing Kalvetua as the being answering the Sea God’s believers. At his current level, he estimates that he can use it at full power only two or three times 325 353 454. He continues to regard it as his principal demigod-level treasure and remains concerned about the favors owed for it 519.
- Master Key — Lost when Klein throws it into Mr. A’s altar to stop the ritual 262.
- All-Black Eye — Obtained after Rosago’s death. Initially unusable as a Marionettist potion ingredient because of the True Creator’s mental corruption. Through Fors’s friend, Klein later receives the purified Marionettist characteristic, with the lower-Sequence characteristics separated out as payment 280 414 431.
- Biological Poison Bottle and Iron Cigarette Case — Recovered from Kalvetua’s ruins after being used in the sacrificial attempt 325.
- Black Emperor card — Entrusted to Azik’s messenger before Klein begins operating under his new adventurer identity. Later enhances the standing of his Spirit Body during his exploration of Kalvetua’s ruins 278 323. Subsequently lent through Fors’s arrangement; Lorry receives it from the lady Messenger and memorizes its formulas 485 486.
- Card of Blasphemy compensation — Chooses a Card of Blasphemy as compensation for lending his card after divination supports the decision, then authorizes Fors to conduct the bestowal ritual. The cited exchange does not identify the chosen compensation card’s pathway 486.
- Wireless Telegraph — Purchased during his sea travels and used as a medium for communicating with Arrodes. Klein divines that returning it to the real world is relatively safe before using it to seek information 331 406 407.
- Slumber Charm — Has one available when he notices another abnormality near Danitz’s room and suspects Vice Admiral Iceberg’s involvement 318.
- Divination tools — Uses coins, a yellow-crystal pendulum, and ritual materials according to the method required 145 243 393.
Relationships
- Lorry / Raven — An initially unidentified benefactor and source of complications. Klein confirms that he bears no ill will but declines to admit him to the Tarot Club after divination indicates that membership would not bring positive changes. Separately, Lorry’s ancient-being disguise secures three future favors from him. Through Fors, Lorry later purifies Klein’s Marionettist characteristic in exchange for its lower-Sequence components and a further conditional promise of assistance. Klein comes to suspect that Lorry and Jodson are the same high-ranking Marauder, but this remains a hypothesis 243 324 325 411 414 431 454. Later, Klein wonders whether Lorry’s material purchases are intended to cultivate companions or avatars and considers his resources a possible lead for future advancement 519.
- Fors Wall / The Magician — Tarot Club member whom Klein protects during the full moon. Her information, diary pages, and trading resources become important enough that he privately concludes the club increasingly needs her, rather than the reverse. He values her discretion, checks that she has not been parasitized, and uses her as an intermediary for questions about saving Leonard 347 352 384 428 430. He explicitly relies on her established credibility in the Card of Blasphemy transaction. Although her apparent display of the Marionette Doll briefly prompts him to consider punishment, he subsequently again recognizes her dependability. Her question about changes in a body’s appearance also resolves a concern he is reluctant to voice himself 486 518 519 520.
- Audrey Hall / Justice — Member whose observations can threaten his composure, but whose connections help him relay urgent warnings to the Evernight Church 137 205. Her later explanation of spirit-body experiments helps him clarify his own identity as a transmigrator who has integrated Klein Moretti’s memories and emotions 520.
- Alger Wilson / The Hanged Man — Trading intermediary and information source. His elaborate interpretations frequently enhance the Fool’s reputation beyond what Klein intended. Klein considers requesting passage aboard his ship to search for mermaids, though Cattleya is his preferred choice 280 353 431.
- Derrick Berg / The Sun — Provides information from the City of Silver, including methods relevant to removing mental corruption from Beyonder characteristics 280 385.
- Azik — Powerful ally who protects him during the Backlund crisis, supplies Creeping Hunger, and advises him on locating targets in the Spirit World. Klein continues consulting him about high-ranking Marauders and unfamiliar mystical concepts 256 278 321 430 431 450. He also plans to ask Azik about the relationship between the Seer, Apprentice, and Marauder pathways 519.
- Sharron — Provides protection during his detective career and helps obtain Gehrman Sparrow’s legal identity. Klein remains concerned about money he owes her 94 263 278.
- Danitz — Companion during his sea adventures and pirate hunts. Klein assigns him investigative work and uses Gehrman’s intimidating manner to keep him cooperative. Despite his irritation with Danitz’s chatter, he recognizes the importance of the pirate’s decision not to flee during their battle 295 303 305 339.
- Old Kohler — Informant and companion during investigations into workers’ conditions. Klein later finds and commemorates his grave after the Great Smog 159 266.
- Ince Zangwill — Target of intense hatred. Klein wants revenge but recognizes that confronting him directly while still Sequence 7 would be beyond his abilities 252 256.
- Leonard Mitchell — Former colleague whose parasitism by a Zoroast Family Angel concerns Klein. Beneath his mocking references to Leonard’s theatrical personality, Klein seeks information, arranges surveillance, and considers involving the Church to save him 391 407 430 431.
- Emlyn White / The Moon — Tarot Club member and real-world acquaintance. Klein commissions him to monitor Williams Street and later has him procure a large face mask for volunteer work 349 387 450.
- Cattleya / The Hermit — Tarot Club member whose knowledge of high-ranking Marauders helps Klein understand parasitism and avatar creation. He also identifies her as his preferred source of passage for a mermaid search 430 431 454.
- Xio / Judgment — New Tarot Club member. Klein observes her discovery of connections with existing members and considers using her to report Leonard’s condition to the Church if deep parasitism is confirmed 418 428 431.
- “Flower Bow Tie” Jodson / King of the Curtain — Pirate-hunting collaborator whose apparently modest strength proves deceptive. Klein investigates him, later suspects that he is a high-ranking Marauder, and hypothesizes that he and Raven are the same person 295 308 309 339 454. He later hears that Jodson has left the Golden Dream, adopted the title King of the Curtain, and clashed with Nast over a legendary ghost ship 519.
- Arrodes — Magic mirror that addresses Klein with extravagant reverence and readily answers his questions through the Wireless Telegraph. Supplies information about ability-stealing items and Leonard’s hidden Parasite 406 407.
