Appearance
- Appears to be in his thirties, with distinctive singed-yellow eyebrows 291.
- Wears a black cloak when arriving in Bayam with Gehrman Sparrow 291.
- Uses a simple disguise during the Norgar Island investigation 482.
Personality
Danitz is boastful, foul-mouthed, and highly conscious of his reputation. He embellishes his account of Gehrman Sparrow’s assistance to make their relationship sound like a friendship won through his personal charisma. After the hunt for Steel’s group, he readily includes himself in their collective achievements, despite Klein having killed two of their three opponents 293 303.
His swagger often collapses around stronger people. He privately curses Gehrman and Jodson while outwardly complying with their demands, and his rising bounty frightens him more than it pleases him. Once it reaches 5,500 pounds, he decides to remain close to Gehrman rather than risk becoming someone else’s payday 295 315 330.
Despite his fear, Danitz refuses to abandon companions at critical moments. He risks himself to free Gehrman from Wraith possession and later volunteers to help Jodson against a Sequence 5 enemy. Protecting the Golden Dream’s reputation—and especially Edwina—helps him overcome his instinct to flee 299 303 405.
He dislikes studying and dreads Edwina’s detailed explanations and personalized examinations. His affection for her also makes him jealous of Jodson’s private lessons, eventually leading him to mistake research sessions for a secret romantic relationship 305 366 421.
His loyalty extends to his subordinates. He wants to pursue the attackers who wounded Orpheus’s party, assists with emergency treatment, and later offers to hold off the controlled Griffin so Mia can escape and warn Edwina. He accepts Mia and Griffin’s decision to retire with sadness, acknowledging that they cannot remain pirates forever 477 478 496 523.
Although frequently mocked for his mistakes, Danitz can be observant and exercise discretion. He identifies inconsistencies in the false Jodson’s behavior and avoids alarming the crew unnecessarily when the Blood Pirates retreat. His inability to help Edwina study the Solomon Empire’s form of Ancient Feysac also becomes a source of regret when he sees how exhausted she is 523.
Abilities & Skills
Pyromancy
- Fireballs: Produces compressed, incandescent-white fireballs for direct attacks and explosions 298 299.
- Fire Crows: Summons a flock of fiery birds to attack pursuers and shatter ice mirrors 300.
- Spiritual damage: Uses three white fireballs to destroy residual Spirit Bodies after Klein’s interrogation 304.
- Fire resistance: Survives detonating his own fireball behind himself to disperse Steel’s freezing wind. The maneuver still leaves him considerably injured 299.
- Diversion: Sets rooftops alight during his escape from the Bayam ambush, creating a conspicuous disturbance 292.
- Illumination and ignition: Holds a fireball in his palm to illuminate the ghost ship’s corridors and produces a small flame to light a signal flare 493 524.
- Armored targets: Uses repeated crimson fireballs to repel an armored worm while preparing a stronger blazing-white fireball. The compressed attack melts its blood-colored shell and kills it after the weaker explosions fail to inflict apparent damage 494.
- Combat while wounded: Despite severe bleeding and nearly exhausted spirituality, forms a blazing-white fireball that overwhelms Griffin’s Furious Strike and throws him against a wall 496.
Provocation
- Combines deliberately inflammatory insults with the supernatural Provocation ability 300.
- Distracts Bonebreaker Sebas while the Wraith possesses Gehrman, creating an opening for Lorry to intervene 300.
Physical Combat and Mobility
- Uses agility developed over years at sea to cross rooftops despite an injured left arm 299.
- Feints an escape in one direction before sprinting the other way, misleading Steel, Huntley, and Scowal 299.
- Reacts to a mutinous sailor’s punch by evading and sweeping him onto the deck with a low kick 441.
- Possesses sufficient Pyromaniac strength to pull a tightly attached Yamaha off bare-handed, a feat Lorry judges difficult for an ordinary person 480.
- Has a Hunter’s excellent eyesight and hearing, using them to inspect dark rooms, hear footsteps inside Edwina’s cabin, and recognize the Golden Dream through nighttime fog 494 523 524.
- Leaps steadily between boats separated by several meters 524.
Rituals and Information Gathering
- Performs rituals taught by Edwina to contact the Golden Dream, including a Spirit Descent ritual. He does not always remember the required timing correctly 309 342.
- Gathers information in bars and casinos, including while disguised 298 315 339.
- Leads Lorry to a retired information broker and encounters an acquaintance who recognizes him 456 457 458.
- Knows the mixed local language and Intisian used by natives dealing with outsiders around Norgar Island, explaining a boatman’s speech to Lorry 455.
- Has contacts on Norgar Island and in Port Farim, drawing on past experience to obtain information and arrange supplies 456 458 459 523.
- Deduces that the unusually powerful Jodson is an impostor partly because he declines an opportunity to tease Danitz over the rumors about Edwina, unlike the real third mate 523.
- Limitation: Lacks anti-divination methods, allowing Lorry’s Scholarly Man to locate him through his drinking cup 291.
Field Treatment and Exploration
- Under Lorry’s direction, removes embedded metal javelins from an injured subordinate and immediately applies hemostatic bandages to the wounds 478.
- Inspects unfamiliar rooms by listening at doors and opening them cautiously. When apparently returned to an earlier corridor, considers testing the surroundings and leaving marks rather than immediately accepting that he is trapped in a loop 494 495.
- Recognizes the value of Mia’s specialized medicinal powder and follows her instructions to repel the ghost ship’s wormlike creatures 495.
Equipment & Property
- Flying Carpet — A peacock-blue Sealed Artifact capable of carrying people through the air. Danitz chooses it over two Sequence 7 Beyonder characteristics when Lorry distributes the spoils 292 305 306.
- Black Sheriff charm — Supplied by Jodson as an emergency means of summoning him within ten minutes in the City of Generosity. Klein confirms its tracking capabilities; Danitz crushes it during the fight with Steel’s group 295 296 299.
- Borrowed disguise artifact — Klein lends him a Sealed Artifact to alter his appearance while investigating Jodson 339.
- Silver drinking cup — Used by Lorry’s materialized Scholarly Man as a focus for Dream Divination to locate Danitz 291.
- Two Bayam properties — Plans to sell them to fund a Conspirer potion purchase 405. He has not yet sold his property when Edwina allocates him a Conspirer characteristic without requiring payment 523.
- Dagger — Carried at the back of his waist; used to examine the corpse and resistant shell of a worm killed aboard the ghost ship 494.
- Location-sensing charm — Distributed by Edwina before boarding the ghost ship. It is intended to reveal the positions of the other charms when infused with spirituality, but Danitz receives no response after being separated inside 492 493.
- Worm-repelling medicinal powder — Supplied by Mia during the ghost ship expedition, with instructions to apply it every five minutes 495.
- Conspirer Beyonder Characteristic — Allocated to him by Edwina as his share of the expedition rewards, including Mia and Griffin’s thanks. It resembles a filthy, rust-covered brain with eyes. Edwina retains it in her drawer during their conversation while directing him to obtain the supplementary ingredients 523.
- Signal flare — Uses a flare producing red light and golden sparks to request a boat from the Golden Dream after returning from Port Farim 524.
Background / History
Bayam Ambush and the Hunt for Steel
Already serving as the Golden Dream’s Fourth Sailor-in-Charge, Danitz arrives in Bayam aboard the White Agate alongside Gehrman Sparrow. After they separate, he approaches a contact point and is stabbed in the chest with a scalpel. Frost obstructs his escape, prompting Lorry to send a materialized Scholarly Man to help him 283 291.
At the Azure Wind Inn, Danitz reports the ambush to Edwina through a dream ritual. He exaggerates his relationship with Gehrman and presents the planned hunt for Steel Maveti as an effort to recover his standing. Edwina offers assistance, and Jodson subsequently joins the preparations as a mobile reserve 293 295.
The hunt becomes dangerous when Bonebreaker Sebas possesses Gehrman. Danitz initially considers fleeing, but instead activates Jodson’s charm, breaks through Steel’s freezing restraint with an explosive fireball, and provokes Sebas to distract him. Lorry takes over the fight against Sebas while Klein and Danitz face the remaining enemies 299 300.
Danitz kills Blood-colored Thorn Huntley; Klein kills Steel and Scowal. Despite his exhaustion, Danitz immediately wants to help Jodson, unaware that Sebas is already dead. During the subsequent settlement, he is temporarily left with Gehrman as collateral while Lorry retrieves the spoils, then receives the Flying Carpet as his chosen reward 303 304 305 306.
Rising Bounty and Work with Gehrman
Danitz’s association with the hunt raises his bounty to 4,200 pounds. He enjoys hearing praise in the Fragrant Leaf Bar until the conversation turns to the money offered for his capture, at which point he hastily leaves 315.
His bounty later reaches 5,500 pounds after he is suspected of posting a notice at the Church of Storms. Although Elland advises him to leave Bayam, Danitz elects to stay near Gehrman for protection. He continues monitoring wireless transmissions and, after they experience related dreams about Jodson, investigates the third mate’s activities under disguise 330 331 339.
After learning that Jodson killed the Blackthorn’s crew, Danitz urgently contacts Edwina to warn her about possible retaliation from Vice Admiral Dusk. He also tries to dissuade Gehrman from a dangerous operation involving Vice Admiral of Ailment Tracy, mistakenly interpreting it as competition with Jodson 342 378.
Return to the Golden Dream
Back aboard the Golden Dream, Danitz delivers 5,000 pounds to Edwina on Lorry’s behalf. His jealousy intensifies when Klein suggests that Jodson has a better chance of winning the captain’s affection than the other boatswains 366.
Lorry’s access to a Conspirer potion gives Danitz a possible route to advancement. With Edwina’s encouragement, he asks Lorry to reserve it until after the expedition and proposes selling his Bayam properties to pay. He explains that he wants strength appropriate to his bounty and the ability to protect the captain, ship, friends, and subordinates 397 405.
Edwina later assigns Danitz to remind Lorry of his lessons ten minutes in advance. The crew also sends him to investigate an unusually long evening session in her cabin. Lorry’s request that Edwina be allowed to rest convinces Danitz that the two are concealing more than extra lessons 414 420 421.
The Death Announcer
Danitz identifies the approaching Death Announcer after Lorry raises the alarm. During the confrontation, he recognizes that the rumored “Death’s Key” has again drawn enemies to the Golden Dream, despite his understanding that the key belonged to a giant and had no connection to Death 436 440.
When Agalito’s emotional manipulation drives sailors into violence and panic, Danitz attempts to restrain his own subordinates. After Lorry leaves to draw the Pirate King away, Danitz fears that he has sacrificed himself for the crew. Remembering that Jodson has now saved him twice, he reproaches himself for his habitual hostility toward him 441 442.
Afterward, Danitz invites Lorry to a barbecue following the crew’s hunt for Mermen. He joins Edwina and the other senior pirates at the feast, where they share prized Merman cheek meat 453.
Norgar Island Investigation
During the search for the Solomon Empire’s ghost ship, Danitz accompanies Lorry ashore while Edwina searches the surrounding waters aboard the Golden Dream. His familiarity with the area helps them navigate local speech and contacts. He brings Lorry to a secluded inn he visited years earlier, settles a disputed old bill, and orders fried Yamaha as a local specialty 455 456.
At the Holy Water bar, Danitz approaches his acquaintance Hogg for information about the ghost ship. Hogg reports that outsiders with navy connections have already made inquiries, and Danitz asks him to pass an information request to his employer, Black Scorpion. Unknown to Danitz, Hogg subsequently proposes killing him for his bounty, prompting Black Scorpion to ask for details 458 459.
Danitz’s misunderstanding of Lorry’s relationship with Edwina culminates in a drunken confrontation. Believing Lorry has visited a streetwalker, he offers to conceal it from the captain if Lorry promises not to repeat it. Lorry instead questions him about the romantic rumor and explains that his long sessions with Edwina concerned Teleportation charms. He orders Danitz to correct the story, threatens hypnosis if it continues, and offers semifinished charms as an incentive for good behavior during his absence 461 462.
Rescue on Tarakha Island
When Orpheus’s exploration party is attacked on Tarakha Island, Danitz promptly prepares to accompany Lorry. Lorry transports them with a Teleportation silver medal, allowing them to reach the endangered party 476.
After the attackers withdraw, Danitz tries to pursue them to avenge his companions, but Lorry stops him by lifting him by the collar. He then assists with treating the wounded, removing javelins from Griffin and pressing hemostatic bandages over the injuries under Lorry’s direction 477 478.
Danitz also assists Lorry in examining a Yamaha, opening its shell to expose its blood sac. His earlier experience preparing the creatures as food provides practical knowledge of their anatomy 480.
Boarding the Solomon Empire Ghost Ship
During the prolonged search at sea, Danitz patrols the Golden Dream and rebukes subordinates who complain that the expedition is wasting time. When an ancient black ship emerges from the fog after a violent disturbance, he alerts Edwina and asks how they can prevent it from escaping. Lorry’s subsequent demonstration leaves him privately questioning whether the third mate can really be Jodson 490 491.
Edwina selects Danitz as the only sailor chief to join the boarding party. Once aboard, he finds himself isolated in a dark corridor, and the location-sensing charm she supplied fails to detect his companions. He resolves to search for the others, particularly Edwina, while illuminating his surroundings with fire 491 492 493.
While inspecting rooms, Danitz encounters an armored, blood-colored worm resembling a larger Yamaha. Ordinary crimson fireballs repel it without visibly injuring it, so he compresses a stronger blazing-white fireball that melts its shell and kills it. He continues exploring, finding Fourth Epoch antiques, books, and coins, but eventually appears to return to a familiar corridor 494 495.
Danitz forces himself to consider alternatives to a supernatural loop and plans to test the rooms and leave marks. He then reunites with Mia, exchanges information with her, and accepts her medicinal powder to repel the worms. Their reunion is interrupted by Griffin, who has fallen under the ship’s control 495 496.
Griffin ambushes Danitz and severely wounds his torso. Bleeding heavily, Danitz urges Mia to escape, find Edwina, and warn her that the Fourth Epoch objects are dangerous. He remains behind to delay Griffin, using a blazing-white fireball to overpower his subordinate’s attack despite nearly exhausting his spirituality. Mia returns with Lorry, who subdues Griffin and reunites the surviving expedition members after dismantling the ship’s maze 496.
Because Danitz and other pirates are injured, Lorry gives Edwina a Magician Beyonder Characteristic with which to make rudimentary use of Damage Transfer. The crew subsequently begins organizing the ghost ship’s treasure for distribution. Danitz later spots the approaching Black Emperor; Lorry remains with the ghost ship while Edwina orders the Golden Dream to depart 497 498 501 524.
Conspirer Reward and the False Jodson’s Identity
Later, Danitz observes the Blood Pirates’ fleet approaching the Golden Dream, only for it to turn and flee before he can raise a general alarm. He withholds the news from the crew to avoid panic and reports directly to Edwina. She approves his discretion and orders additional lookouts 522 523.
During the same conversation, Edwina shows him a Conspirer Beyonder Characteristic allocated as his expedition share, including Mia and Griffin’s thanks. Danitz initially worries that he has not sold his Bayam property and cannot pay the absent Jodson, but Edwina explains that no payment is required. She also tells him that Mia and Griffin intend to leave the Golden Dream and settle in a quiet village 523.
Danitz then asks whether the extraordinarily capable third mate is truly Jodson. He explains that the man’s sudden increase in strength aroused suspicion, while his failure to exploit Danitz’s drunken romantic misunderstanding for further teasing was unlike the real Jodson. Edwina confirms the imposture and identifies the substitute as a student of her former teacher who joined the expedition to digest his potion. She permits Danitz to inform only the small group of senior companions involved in the suspicion 523.
Edwina assigns Danitz to arrange supplies at Port Farim, seek the supplementary ingredients for his potion, and collect the real Jodson from room 3. After completing the resupply arrangements, he stops at a bar and encounters newspaper reports of the substitute Jodson’s exploits. The reports identify him as the King of the Curtain, while Gerard supplies news that the King of the Five Seas came off worse in a clash with his ghost ship 523 524.
Stunned, Danitz returns to the Golden Dream before completing the pickup assignment and urgently reports the news to Edwina and the assembled senior crew. His account leaves the cabin silent. Meanwhile, the real Jodson sets out for Port Farim, unaware of the full extent of the reputation accumulated in his name 524.

Relationships
- Edwina Edwards / Vice Admiral Iceberg — Captain, teacher, and object of his affection. He respects her discretion, fears her lessons and examinations, and wants to become stronger to protect her 293 305 394 405. She later allocates him a Conspirer characteristic and entrusts him with resupply duties and collecting the real Jodson. He regrets being unable to help with her Fourth Epoch research because he does not understand the relevant form of Ancient Feysac 523.
- Gehrman Sparrow / Klein — Former captor turned hunting partner and protector. Danitz fears being exchanged for his bounty but risks his life to rescue him; Klein consequently develops a better opinion of his character 293 299 303 330.
- Lorry / “Flower Bow Tie” Jodson — Fellow Golden Dream officer, frequent tormentor, rescuer, and prospective potion supplier. Danitz resents his teasing and closeness to Edwina, yet trusts him to return with the spoils and later feels guilty when he believes Jodson may have sacrificed himself 305 397 405 442. Lorry corrects his romantic misunderstanding and later rescues him during the ghost ship expedition. Danitz eventually deduces that he is impersonating Jodson, receives confirmation from Edwina, and brings the senior crew news of his emergence as the King of the Curtain 462 496 523 524.
- The real “Flower Bow Tie” Jodson — The Golden Dream’s actual third mate. Danitz remembers him as someone who previously struggled to beat him and who would not miss an opportunity to tease him. These expectations help expose Lorry’s impersonation. Edwina later assigns Danitz to bring the returning officer back aboard 394 523.
- Tinplate and Bucket — Fellow boatswains and drinking companions. They mock his fear of Jodson and share his jealousy over the captain’s attention 366 420. Tinplate takes his urgent return from Port Farim seriously and orders the boat crew to bring him back to the Golden Dream as quickly as possible 524.
- Orpheus — The Golden Dream’s second mate. Danitz accompanies Lorry to rescue his attacked exploration party on Tarakha Island 476 477.
- Mia and Griffin — Subordinates whose safety he takes seriously. Danitz helps treat Griffin’s wounds after the Tarakha Island attack. On the ghost ship, Mia supplies him with worm-repelling powder, while the controlled Griffin ambushes and severely wounds him. Danitz nevertheless tries to buy Mia time to escape. Their thanks later contribute to his Conspirer characteristic reward, and he accepts their decision to retire from piracy with mixed sadness and approval 478 495 496 523.
- Hogg — An acquaintance from Danitz’s earlier years around Norgar Island and the Holy Water bar’s head bouncer. Danitz seeks his help obtaining information, unaware that Hogg proposes killing him for his bounty 458 459.
- Elland — Captain of the White Agate. Leads Danitz and Klein during the Bayam searches, relays bounty updates, and warns Danitz about the danger of remaining in the city 321 330.
- Steel Maveti, Huntley, and Scowal — Enemies involved in his Bayam ambush and subsequent hunt. Danitz personally kills Huntley 291 299 303.
