Background / History
Origin and estrangement from the gods
Kama was born from Brahma’s heart. Initially fascinated by her arrows’ ability to create love, she eventually recognized that other gods used her office as an instrument of their own plans 672 701.
Indra’s schemes led her to interrupt Shiva’s austerities, and Shiva burned her to ashes. The experience left her resentful of Shiva, Indra, her duties, and herself. Abandoning her work brought temporary relief, but also an identity crisis: she could not see what remained of Kama without the title “god of love” 616 701.
The Ooku incident
Kasuga-no-Tsubone’s dying attachment to the Ooku and the Tokugawa drew Kama to the labyrinth. Kama expanded it beginning with Tokugawa Iemitsu, corrupted successive shoguns, and fused with the Ooku itself. Mara spoke within her, repeatedly criticizing her attempts to corrupt Bai Mo 609 614 622.
Kama recognized Bai Mo from a recording of Tezcatlipoca’s livestream before meeting him. Her attempts to tempt him through the labyrinth’s precept trials repeatedly failed: he refused to attack her during the killing trial and mapped the second-floor maze rather than accept a shortcut requiring a false declaration 608 611 613.
During the final confrontation, anti-Tokugawa attacks damaged her manifested body but barely affected her universal scale. Kasuga-no-Tsubone’s reclamation of the Ooku weakened Kama’s control and her connection to the surrounding universe, allowing Bai Mo and Chaldea to press their attack. Kama’s last flower-arrow gambit also failed; the care returned through its petals conflicted with her nature as a Beast, and she chose not to reject it 619 624 625 626 627.
Following her defeat, Kama withdrew into her inner universe. Kiara found her there and modified her existence to permit Servant summoning. Chaldea later confirmed that the incident had caused no deaths, although the Ooku’s food had been extraordinarily caloric 629.
Bai Mo’s companion in India
Kama helped Bai Mo after Maha Pralaya cast him into nothingness, and the two established a Master–Servant relationship. She then accompanied him through India, including Karna’s training and their journey to Magadha 636 641 646 657.
Her assistance extended beyond combat. She persuaded Bai Mo to spare a Rakshasa tribe, proposed disguises to bypass Rajagriha’s guards, and helped relieve Agni’s suffering. Against Yao Lian, her burning arrow struck his second body’s heart while Bai Mo pierced the other body’s heart in Rajagriha 639 662 666 679 693.
A new divine office
After Bai Mo encouraged her to leave her unwanted duties behind, Kama destroyed her temple statue. Learning of his plans to create a new divine aspect gave her a chance to define herself differently 690 701.
To qualify as a protector of the oppressed, she remodeled her temple, disguised herself as a human, listened to residents’ experiences of abuse and slavery, and consulted Enma about judgment and punishment. Vishnu and Brahma approved the proposed office, but Shiva interrupted the baptism because he still regarded her as an enemy of austerity 702 704 705 706.
Bai Mo opposed Shiva and dedicated his austerity and merit to her rebirth. Once her new position was recognized, Kama confronted the misunderstanding behind her original punishment. Rather than demand elaborate revenge, she accepted a single punch to Shiva’s face as compensation. Shiva acknowledged her growing self-control and granted her a fire seed 706 710 711.
Arjuna’s judgment and the rescue from nothingness
As patron deity of the oppressed, Kama denied the merit protecting Arjuna, shattering his golden halo. Nevertheless, his combined divine power remained overwhelming, and Maha Pralaya again cast Bai Mo into nothingness 729 730 735 737.
Kama refused to abandon him, even after learning that entering nothingness could dissolve her new divine office and restore her Beast traits. Inside, Mara urged her to return to Bai Mo as an obstructer of his path. She rejected that prospect and intended to leave an escape crystal for Bai Mo while remaining behind herself 738 746.
Bai Mo instead used their bond and a Command Spell to find her. He insisted that his companion was Kama herself, not merely her divine title. After they returned, her office and accumulated merit remained intact: rescuing him so that he could protect Arjuna’s victims had fulfilled her new role 746 747.
Kama subsequently ambushed Indra, settling both her old grievance over being burned and his recent interference on Arjuna’s behalf. Back at Chaldea, she openly credited her relationship with Bai Mo to her own efforts rather than her arrows 748 754.
Appearance
- Youthful vessel: Initially appears as a young girl with platinum-silver hair, apple-red lips, and slender fingers. She deliberately presents herself barefoot when approaching Bai Mo 610.
- Adult manifestation: Assumes a young woman’s form in purple silk decorated with gold thread, sapphires, and amethysts; a thigh ribbon holds golden throwing knives 614.
- Variable form: Can return to a petite, childlike appearance or transform into a convincing Rakshasa woman with wheat-colored skin and animal-skin clothing 646 662.
- Beast features: Possesses horns and a crown containing countless apparent stars. Wounds in her universal body reveal a starry interior rather than blood 619 620 622.
- New divine manifestation: Her baptism covers her original clothing in golden soft armor. After her return from nothingness, that golden radiance integrates into her body instead 710 747.
Personality
Kama is flirtatious, proud of her charm, and easily frustrated when her efforts fail to produce the expected reaction. She teases Bai Mo, seeks praise for helping him, and becomes noticeably bolder when they are alone. Despite her claims of professional mastery over temptation, Mara’s criticism and Bai Mo’s indifference repeatedly unsettle her 610 614 662 693.
Her laziness is closely tied to disillusionment with her divine duties. Being burned for carrying out the gods’ plans left her frightened of pain and convinced that her office brought only harm. She initially resents the idea that gods cannot grow or change, but becomes energetic and diligent when offered meaningful work of her own choosing 625 646 701 702.
Her attachment to Bai Mo develops from curiosity about their shared experience of being burned into personal love. That attachment can be possessive: she admits wanting both Bai Mo and Rati, and initially fails to appreciate how deeply this hurts her wife. Her later willingness to risk her new identity to save Bai Mo marks a shift from clinging to what she possesses toward acting on what she believes is right 711 713 738.
Abilities & Skills
Love and desire
Kama’s flower arrows induce love, while her Beast manifestation seeks to engulf humanity in unrestricted love and desire 614 622.
- Uses arrows for disruptive romantic “pranks,” including creating attachments across social boundaries 614.
- Can exploit existing desires; even Ritsuka’s wish to rescue companions becomes part of her control 619.
- Applies Tokugawafication within the Ooku, eroding victims’ sense of identity 620.
- Her promised arrow fails to stop Bai Mo from intercepting her subsequent attack on Ritsuka 626.
The Formless One
Being burned by Shiva gave Kama a formless existence connected to emptiness and a private conceptual universe 629 636.
- Can move through the nothingness into which Maha Pralaya sends Bai Mo 636.
- Retreats into an inner universe accessible to those burned by Shiva’s flames 629.
- Uses her formless traits and divine rank to evade detection by an aspect of Shiva while disguised 662.
- Entering nothingness after gaining her new office requires returning toward her burned-out state, placing that office at apparent risk 738.
Universal body and duplicates
As a Beast, Kama possesses a body equivalent to a universe and can manifest innumerable versions of herself 620 622.
- Apparent stars within her universe are individual Kamas, each possessing her horsepower 620.
- Ordinary wounds inflict negligible damage relative to her scale; a cut throat closes instantly without bleeding 619 622.
- Her duplicates do not share her Complete Realm, making them far more vulnerable to power suppression 621.
- Reasserting the Ooku’s authority restricts her local control and connection to the universe without directly eliminating her universal body 624.
Shiva’s flames
Kama wields azure flames of depravity containing some of Shiva’s destructive power 620 622.
- Releases a flame eruption covering a radius of ten thousand li during her battle with Bai Mo 622.
- Uses flames to erase injuries 625.
- Initially lacks the precision needed to safely burn poison out of Agni; Bai Mo must guide the flames with Magnetic Field Power 693.
- Gains free control of the flames after receiving Shiva’s fire seed 711 716.
Protection of the oppressed
Her new divine office gives Kama authority to challenge power justified by the suffering of others 704 729 730.
- Denies Arjuna’s protective merit in the name of the oppressed, destroying his golden halo 729 730.
- Threatens to turn the merit Bai Mo left her into a curse if Arjuna kills her 737.
- Preserves her divine office through an act of self-sacrifice, despite believing that she is abandoning it 738 747.
Archery, perception, and divine knowledge
Kama combines long-range archery with knowledge of Indian gods, blessings, and divine weapons 657 666 684.
- Strikes Yao Lian’s second body in Hastinapura with a burning arrow emerging from the sun 666.
- Identifies the divine powers blended into three hostile Heroic Spirits before seeing them 715.
- Recognizes William Tell from his crossbow and concealed second bolt 716.
- Can invoke curses through a broken promise where a karmic connection has already been established 626.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Bow of Wishes — Used alongside her duplicates to fire massed volleys at Bai Mo 611.
- Flower-arrow bow — A short bow made of sugarcane, with bees as its string and five kinds of flowers serving as arrows 625.
- Vajra — Uses the weapon partly to mock Indra rather than for its power; Bai Mo repeatedly destroys her manifested vajras 619 625.
- Golden throwing knives — Carried on the thigh ribbon of her adult manifestation 614.
- Vishnu’s lotus — A gift celebrating her new divine office; a lotus later encloses her defensively against Arjuna, but he tears it apart 710 730.
- Page of the Vedas — Brahma’s gift. Kama writes requests for protection from arrows and storms, and for enemies to collide with her weapon 710 716.
- Shiva’s fire seed — Grants authorized, controlled use of his flames 711 716.
- Moonlight Mace — Recovered from Duryodhana’s corpse and used to hammer a vajra into Indra’s face 748.
Relationships
- Bai Mo — Master, companion, and romantic attachment. He supports her new divine office and refuses to abandon her when her Beast traits return; she later states that she won him over through her own efforts 636 706 711 747 754.
- Rati — Wife. Pleaded with Shiva after Kama was burned and later confronts her attachment to Bai Mo. Ultimately gives Kama one chance rather than let her renounce her hard-won new life 713.
- Brahma — Father, from whose heart she was born. Kama also calls him “Grandfather”; he approves her new office and gives her a page of the Vedas 672 704 710.
- Shiva / Mahadeva — Source of her original trauma and initial opponent of her rebirth. After their misunderstanding is exposed, he accepts her punch as compensation and grants her a fire seed 705 710 711.
- Indra — Resented superior whose schemes contributed to her burning. His support for Arjuna adds another grievance, which Kama settles through a violent ambush 675 711 737 748.
- Mara — Internal tempter during the Ooku incident and later an obstructing presence urging her back toward Beast-hood. Kama rejects his claim that she can only hinder ascetics 608 614 746 747.
- Kiara Sessyoin — Incompatible counterpart as Beast III/R. Despite their mutual hostility, Kiara makes Kama eligible for Servant summoning 629.
- Krishna / Vishnu — Ally who endorses her new divine office, gives her a lotus, and helps prompt her reconciliation with Rati 704 710 713.
- Kasuga-no-Tsubone — Her dying attachment summons Kama to the Ooku; her later reclamation of its authority undermines Kama’s control 622 624.
- Arjuna — Enemy whose judgment Kama challenges as protector of the oppressed. He had previously spared her when devouring the gods because he considered the god of love unnecessary 729 730.
- Rama with the Axe — Initially hostile ascetic who regards her as a threat to cultivation. Permits her to stay only out of consideration for Bai Mo 641 644.
