Background / History

The Primordial Wilderness was created when Pangu cleaved apart the gray, lifeless expanse of Primordial Chaos. As the divided Chaos Qi rose and sank, heaven and earth took shape; Pangu then supported them with his body for 108,000 years until his power was exhausted. 1

Pangu's death further shaped the world. His body became Mount Buzhou, the pillar supporting heaven and earth; his primordial spirits became the Three Pure Ones, while twelve drops of vital blood became the Twelve Ancestral Shamans. Portions of Creation-Splitting Merit entered the newly formed world, Pangu's successors, and several Opening Heaven treasures. 1

Less than ten thousand years after Pangu's transformation, a black hole appeared in the Eastern Sea and released the Great Dao Secret Record before vanishing. 1

During the opening of heaven and earth, Green Willow briefly helped Pangu hold the separating realms apart, damaging its origin. It later received three portions of Creation-Splitting Merit, which healed it and elevated it into a Creation-grade Innate Spirit Root. 3

Geography

• Primordial Continent — The central landmass and principal arena of the hundred clans’ struggle for supremacy. The Qilin Clan occupies its central region. 7
• Eastern Sea — Domain of the Dragon Clan and Black Tortoise Clan; Penglai Island lies within its overseas region. 1 7 12
• Penglai Island — One of the Three Overseas Islands. It spans roughly ten million li, is bordered by Primordial Chaos qi, and contains regions capable of converting Chaos qi into innate spiritual qi. 12
• Mount Buzhou — Formed from Pangu’s body after his death; it supports heaven and earth. The Innate Gourd Vine grows there. 1 3
• Southern Radiance Undying Volcano — The Phoenix Clan’s stronghold in the southern heavens. 7
• Sun Star — Formed from Pangu’s left eye and the destination of the Chaos Bell after the creation of heaven and earth. 1
• Taiyin Star — Home of the Moon Laurel, which is connected to the Moon Yin Spirit Vein. 3

Inhabitants and Power Structure

Great Dao and Heavenly Dao

Before Hongjun merged with the Dao, the Heavenly Dao remained hidden and the Great Dao temporarily governed the Primordial Wilderness. The Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin Clans therefore directed their vows to the Great Dao rather than the Heavenly Dao. 7

Primordial Three Clans

The Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin Clans became the three dominant powers after their leaders swore to protect living beings and rule their respective kinds. The Great Dao rewarded them with immense merit, raising Ancestral Dragon, Phoenix Ancestor, and Qilin Ancestor to the peak of the Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal realm. 7

The three powers maintain a tense balance. Though they seek supremacy, none initially holds an overwhelming advantage over the others. 7

Hundred Clans and Independent Cultivators

The world contains countless races, with the Dragon, Phoenix, Qilin, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise Clans regarded as its six great races. 7 27

The Primordial Wilderness is governed largely by strength: independent cultivators are generally vulnerable before established clans, while opposition to the Three Clans’ authority carries little weight without sufficient power. 7

The era is particularly perilous during the Dragon-Phoenix Tribulation. The three dominant clans, the hundred races, and numerous Innate Fiendgods make it an age of exceptional power despite the absence of Sages. 36

Spiritual Environment

• Innate spiritual qi is abundant across the early Primordial Wilderness, making ordinary cultivation sites relatively easy to find. 25
• Primordial Chaos qi surrounds parts of Penglai Island and is dangerous even to powerful cultivators. 12
• Spirit herbs, spirit roots, and spirit stones are widespread, providing plentiful material for cultivation, alchemy, and artifact refinement. 28 31
• Early cultivators generally lack systematic cultivation arts, relying instead on innate inheritances, personal exploration, and discussion of the Dao. 5
• The world’s space is exceptionally stable: even Quasi-Sages cannot casually tear open spatial rifts, and true teleportation is extraordinarily rare. 11

Notable Lifeforms

• Primordial Chaos Demon Gods — Three thousand existed within Primordial Chaos before Pangu opened heaven and earth. Most died in the creation tribulation; some survivors reincarnated into the Primordial Wilderness. 35
• Innate Demon Gods / Innate Fiendgods — In response to fate after the opening of heaven, the Primordial Wilderness gave rise to nine thousand innate demon gods. Their births and transformations occur at different times. 35
• Ten Innate Spirit Roots — The world’s most precious innate spirit roots. Each can suppress fortune; Green Willow, Ginseng Fruit, Bodhi Tree, Ren Water Flat Peach, Fusang Wood, Yellow Central Plum, Bitter Bamboo, Immortal Apricot, Gourd Vine, and Moon Laurel are counted among them. 3

• Time is treated as extraordinarily plentiful in the Primordial Wilderness; cultivation, artifact refinement, and alchemy can each consume thousands or millions of years. 6 30 34
• The world’s vast scale makes even a mountain nearly ten li wide and one hundred zhang tall seem small by local standards. 25
• The Primordial Wilderness is later said to shatter into the Four Divine Continents and three thousand minor worlds. 4
